Playing Rough

Falling Apart

"What the hell are you doing?" Charley demands, shoving Jonathan away from her. He looks surprised. He really seemed to think that Charley felt the same about him.

"I-I-I'm sorry, I thought you liked me."

"Jake." Charley whispers. Jon couldn't help but be upset. Charley should have been his a long time ago.

"God Charley." Jon could feel tears begin to slip down his cheeks. He looks out at the calm, dark lake and wishes that Charley would just love him too. He covers his face with his hands to hide the tears.

"Charley I want to be with you." Jonathan almost sounds like he's begging now. He wraps his hands around Charley's arms and tries to pull her to him, but she shakes him off and gives him a cold look. She wraps her arms around herself to keep her warm in the cold Chicago weather and refuses to meet Jonathan's gaze.

"Jake." Charley repeats.

"Jake's dead!" Jonathan explodes, anger seeping from him. He covers his mouth, shocked at his words. He finally looks at Charley's face and see's her expression frozen in shock and sadness is visible. She covers her open mouth and lets out a sob, she sinks to her knees on the ground. Jon instantly feels guilt for making her feel this kind of pain.

"Charley, Charley, I'm so sorry. Baby, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean it. Please, Charley." Jon knows he only said those words out of spite. He didn't mean any of it. Charley swats him away and stands up. Pain is evident in her eyes but she sets a hard look on her face.

"Leave me alone. If this is how you're going to treat me, then please, I hope you got it all out now, because after today, I don't plan on ever seeing you again." Charley hisses. She turns around and storms back towards the city. She hears Jon calling her from behind but she ignores him.

Being so late, everything seems dark and unfamiliar and she doesn't recognize anything. She's heard about Chicago being rough in some places, she just hopes she doesn't run into that. She manages to find herself back in Millennium Park. She pulls out her cell phone and dials Noah.

"Hello?"

"Noah, it's Charley. I need you to come pick me up."

"Charley, where the hell are you? It's like eleven o'clock."

"I've been out with Jon and now I need to get home."

"Well where's Jon?"

"Being an asshole."

"Where are you?"

"Millennium Park."

"I'll be right there."

Fifteen minutes later, Noah pulls up in a cab. He steps out and pulls Charley into a hug when he sees she's been crying. He pulls her into the cab next to him and she curls into her brothers chest. As she thinks about the day, tears return to her eyes. Noah leads her into the hotel and into her room.

"Why don't you tell me what happened." Noah says after Charley has changed into her pajamas. Charley sits on the bed next to Noah and he wraps her in a brotherly embrace. She recounts the days events. She begins with waking up next to him, their moment on the EL, and finally ending with the kiss.

"It sounds like you like him." Noah finally says.

"I don't know anymore. It's too soon with everything that happened with Jake, and with the big game tomorrow, I really don't want to get into more boy stuff. You know?"

"I totally understand and agree with you Charley. Focus on hockey. So much has happened, you just need things to go back to normal before you can start something new." Noah rubs Charley's back soothingly and she curls into his side.

"Noah I don't know what I would do without you. You're my best friend. My rock. But most importantly my brother. And I love you so much."

"I love you too Charls." he smiles, using her old childhood nickname. His kisses the top of her head. "Now you need some rest."

"Will you stay?"

"Of course. It's been forever since we've had Noah-Charley time." Noah flips off the lights and they both fall asleep quickly.

The next morning, Charley slips out of bed without disturbing Noah and pulls on a pair of workout clothes. She laces her Nike Freeruns and grabs her phone before heading out the door. As soon as she steps out the door she runs into Jonathan. She freezes and ignores his gaze.

"Can we talk?" Jon asks quietly. Charley can feel herself getting emotional.

"No, not now. After the game. Maybe." she pushes past Jon and heads towards the gym and claims a treadmill. She runs three miles before returning to her room to shower. Noah had already been up and out so she was alone in her room. She plugs her iPhone into the docks and clicks on her favorite playlist that always gets her in the moods for a game. A mix of Hoodie Allen, Macklemore, Grieves, Sam Adams and Mac Miller blast through the room as she gets ready.

They had a morning skate at eleven, lunch at noon, practice from one until two, then free time until they had to be at the arena at five for the game. Charley used the time to nap so that when she showed up at the arena at five for the game, she felt well rested and ready.

She sits down at her locker and begins pulling her equipment on. She laces up her skates and stands next to Jonathan, James and Coach M. Coach gives them a nice pep talk to get them into the game. Charley begins to push everything out of her mind and just focus on the game.

She looks around the room at all the boys who she has become so close with the past two weeks. She'll miss them so much. Hopefully they'll all be together again at Sochi. She's certain that all of them will make it, all of them are good enough.

They skate out onto the fresh ice for warm-ups and Charley begins to feel more confident with every stride. She shoots the puck at their goalie to warm him up and goes through her routine stretches.

An hour later the puck drops.

It's the third period. Charley hasn't had any goals or any assists but she's been part of the major plays in the game. The USA team launches the puck deep into Canada's territory. Charley chases after it, a USA player right behind her. She picks up the puck along the boards but the USA player gives her a hard check into the boards. It was a painful hit and she clenches her teeth.

"No more Jake or Captain Serious to protect you anymore." the boy chirps. Of course. The hockey world is small and close-knit. Everything eventually gets around. Of course they'd heard about what happened with Jake and Jon. And of course, when they're losing by two goals with ten minutes left in the third period they'd bring out the dirty plays. Everything around Charley seemed to shattered and she broke down, tears streaming down her face and she never even bothered to lift herself from the ice. The boy's words seemed to break through the barrier she had put up between her personal life and hockey.

Eventually the ref blew the whistle when he realized a player was down. Within seconds, Coach M, James, Jon, Noah and a trainer were crouched beside Charley. They carried her to the bench and she sat at the very end. Finally she regained her composure and convinces Coach that she is fine and will be able to play. In that time, the USA had scored two consecutive goals.

There was three minutes left. Charley was playing defense on USA's Patrick Kane. She manages to trip over her own feet, falling out of the way and giving Patrick a clear shot at goal. It was obvious he was going to get that goal. Charley was absolutely miserable.

With a minute and a half left Charley is sent out yet again with Jon and Noah at her side. Noah picks up the puck and passes down ice to Jon who taps it over to Charley. Charley winds up to give a hard shot, thirty second left, she brings her stick down

And completely misses.

The stick misses contact with the puck and she knocks herself over with the momentum of the shot. Lucky for the team, Jon picks up her failed attempt and sinks it into the net while the goalie is distracted by Charley's defeat.

They go into overtime and Coach M benches Charley. Five minutes in, Noah scores the game winning goal.

As they celebrate Noah's goal, Charley tries to ignore the disappointed looks she is getting from her Coach and teammates. She shakes it off and heads back to the locker room. She changes back into her clothes and gets ready to head back to the hotel, not feeling in much of a mood to celebrate.

About half of the team, those that were of age, went out to some club to party and pick up chicks while the other half all decided to head back to Noah's to chill. They had just won gold in the Junior World Championship. It was a big deal and worth celebrating. But Charley just meandered back to her room.

The next morning they were all called into the conference room. The Sochi 2014 team was going to be released. Charley sits at a chair in the conference room twiddling her thumbs, waiting for Coach to show up with the list. When he does, he stands at the front of the room and rattles off the names of everyone on the Olympic team. Some of the names they don't recognize, but most are from this team.

Noah, Kyle and Jon's names were called early on and Charley claps for them and gives them all a broad smile. They all deserve to be on that team.

"And that's your Canadian Olympic Team for Sochi 2014." Coach M smiles once he concludes the list of names. Charley looks around and realizes everyone on the team's name was called.

Except hers.
