The Coworker

The last hockey season did not go well in the slightest bit. Pittsburgh didn’t even make playoffs and Sidney ended up injured as well, but he did great representing Canada at the World’s. He is ridiculously talented, but the NHL season just wasn’t meant to be. He was too distracted by his personal life and his teammates knew it.

Being back in Pittsburgh he was always slightly uncomfortable when transitioning to a different lifestyle. He knows it happens every year but this year couldn’t be more different. His house was easy to maintain, his car worked like no problem, but the emptiness he felt inside was what was tearing him apart. For the first time in months he was alone. And he means alone.

This year they wanted everyone to show up for training camp a little early so the team could have a little break and be in a routine before pre-season starts for good. It could be a good thing to an extent or a bad one, especially because a lot of changes are expected to happen.

The players pulled up one by one to the arena and walked into the dressing room where they were equipped to have a meeting with the highest executives. Mario Lemieux was there to greet everyone with a smile and a handshake, and welcomed the newbies. Everyone knew their fate would change anyway so there was no point in focusing on them.

As per usual they did introductions, mentioned their goals to focus on, discussed schedules, team policies and gave an opportunity for players to ask questions. So far it was a good meeting and very productive. They offered them a break to have lunch before they did their mandatory media training session.

“So, what did you do on your break Flower?” Kris asked in the group of seasoned team veterans.

“Learned how to braid hair and learned that I don’t think I can handle more kids. You?”

“Oh I did fuck all. Literally nothing. Phil?”

“I golfed and ate,” Phil laughed. “My mom fed me well. Geno?”

“I played hockey man, do I get a break?”

“No, never,” they all joked.

“Sid?” Geno asked.

“I played hockey and ran my camp for the first time this year.”

“We saw that, how did that go?” Flower asked.

“As good as it could, the kids were awesome and I’ve already planned to do it again next year.”

“I’m glad you're using your platform for good,” Phil said, “Not many guys do that stuff these days.”

“Don’t they have a few in Toronto?” Kris asked.

“Well yeah, but the biggest one run by an NHL player is easily Peter Dumas’ camps. They’re always packed and the Leafs always make an appearance if they’re in town.”

Just the thought of the name sent chills down Sid’s spine. He just smiled at the discussion and kept quiet. He didn’t want to open that can of worms, especially in front of everyone. And I think they all got the vibes from Sidney that he didn’t even want to hear a related name.

No one even talked to him about what happened that night in Toronto. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t talk about it with their wives, girlfriends or each other. Luckily Sidney never found out what exactly what was said, but he figured they’d talk. And he wanted no part in it. Let them talk, they don’t know the truth and only he knows what was true on his side.

Recess was quickly dismissed and they made it back to their seats for media training. Mario was introducing our members to the PensTV team that follow us everywhere and lead everyone to another room for our actual training. When everyone was seated they instantly recognized who they were going to be taught by and you could instantly feel the tension. Even the teammates who had no idea about her past with the team could feel it.

The boys could all agree she looked damn good. A nice form fitted dress that hugged her curves effortlessly, big loose curls, and a tan that most women would kill for. She came to make a good impression and boy did she do that. Not a single man could disagree.

“I would like to introduce you to our new social media coordinator Brianna Dumas,” Mario announced to the room. Last year Bri filled in for an event of ours that turned into a huge success and we want to make her apart of our team and expand our brand on all social media platforms.”

Mario paced the room and did his best to make everyone feel comfortable with the situation, having a suspicion there was some awkwardness. It didn’t help.

“She has an extensive background in all modern trends we should be focusing on, and will be doing her best to keep us up to date. So don’t be surprised if she follows you around a lot. She’s socially stalking you for media purposes. The NHL wants us to push our branding and this is a great way to reach our fans, and I am confident in her abilities to get the job done. So please join me in welcoming her to our team.”

The room broke into applause by the announcement and she just smiled. This season just got a lot more interesting.
