The Coworker

Things around the office at work had been great for Bri and she finally feels settled in. She’s been working closely with the PR team as well as the other media teams and feels comfortable with her position. Things in her personal life have even been going great as well. Her house was finally in order, Marty became well adjusted to his new home, and she had even seen Mia a bit. Things were really looking up for her.

Sid’s playing on the other hand wasn’t the greatest but that’s what training camp is for. Lucky for them it’s almost over and they can still relax before the pregames start.

She was having lunch with Mia when she got a text from Katherine asking if she was interested in going to Cancun for a few days before the season starts. Everyone has a week off in a few days just to get more adjusted before the preseason truly starts and they wanted to do something they had never done before.

She responded saying yes, thinking it would just be a girls trip, but boy was she wrong.

When she showed up to the airport the guys were there too, causing her to be extremely confused. She greeted everyone and the girls all gave her hugs as they were busy waiting to check in. “I thought it was a girls trip,” she whispered to Vero.

“Apparently not,” she responded, making Bri unsure if she was unaware too or just trying to make it seem like that so she wouldn’t get that upset.

As they waited in line and spoke as a group, Sidney walked out of the public washroom. You have got to be kidding me, she thought. Clearly she wasn’t the only one surprised by the presence of someone who was unwanted being there. It was written all over his face. As he ducked under the velvet rope he avoided eye contact and a conversation. His jaw was clenched and he stayed focused on the long line ahead.

He was extremely disappointed that she was on this trip, more than he thought he’d be. Obviously he didn’t want her there because he feels like she’s intruding too much on his life. He was mad at his friends especially for not saying that she was going to be there, but what can he do? She’s here so he has to make the best of it, and that doesn’t mean make amends either.

I think the entire plane felt the tension for the entire flight. Everyone around them conversed just fine, but Bri and Sidney both kept quiet, barely spoke or paid attention. Deep down Bri just wanted to cry knowing how strongly he didn’t want her there. Sidney on the other hand was unbothered.

When they were checking into their hotel every couple was in a room together, except for Geno and Sid, they shared and Bri kept her own room which was conveniently down the hall from theirs. At least that made her feel better that there was going to be barely any contact unless they were in a group setting.

After they got checked in they were ready for the beach! The pool was right there but they felt it was only fitting to go on the pearly white sand and enjoy the activities. The boys tossed a football around and wrestled while the girls tanned and swan in the ocean. You’re only in Mexico so often.

They were having a blast spending the day outside and just relaxing having drinks brought right to them. The day flew by fast and it was time for dinner on the resort. Bri went to her room alone and decided to take a nice shower and put effort into her looks despite the slight sunburn she was starting to get.

She had decided on a very casual yet dressy outfit that she couldn’t help but love. She threw her hair up in a pony tail and got some shoes on. Of course when she walked to the elevator she met up with Sid, who looked equally as upset to be stuck with her.

“So you’re following me eh?” he asked, clenching his jaw as they waited.

“Excuse me?” she asked, not thinking she heard him correctly.

“First you move back into town, working for my team, show up to my house for a private team event and now you’re on vacation with me on the same floor. You must be really desperate for that breaking story.”

“Sid, you know I didn’t-”

“Oh but you did. Now leave me alone for the rest of this vacation and maybe I can tolerate dealing with you being in Pittsburgh for the season.”

“Understood,” she said, walking into the elevator after him once it arrived. “But it was part of my job to show up to the BBQ. Do you think I wanted to go to the place I used to live in?”

“Well, you know where I keep my things, so I’m surprised you didn’t try to sell it on ebay.”

“You’re unbelievable.”

“I think you are,” he hoffed.

As the door closed the tension nearly exploded. They stayed stiff, not changing their eye contact and remaining focused on not screaming at each other at the top of their legs. It was next to impossible to know who was praying the elevator didn’t freeze more. The second they got down to the lobby they were the first one’s down so they waited tensely for their friends to show up.

Once they arrived they went to the restaurant and grabbed a table outside. It was nice to catch up and shoot the shit like always while discussing some things that were happening professionally.

“Well they have a huge meeting when we get back for more media training, I think Phil will have to go back,” Kris joked.

“And Geno,” Flower added.

“The only training I do, is training of her body,” Geno licked his lips, eyeing a skinny little blonde woman at the bar. By the looks of her she was going to go to the nightclub at the resort for the night so he was probably going to do the same.

“Easy, we can go later/ Let’s just get through dessert first,” Sidney joked with him. This was the most normal he seemed thus far on the trip.

“We’re all such adults ordering sundae’s and whatnot,” Vero joked as the waiter brought out everyone’s ice cream.

“Bonino would be in heaven right now,” Geno joked, grabbing a huge mouthful of his.

All the guys bust out laughing, obviously an inside joke that had to do with him and ice cream.

“Do we wanna know?” Katherine asked.

“No,” they all shook their heads.

Bri already had an idea of what it was so she quietly laughed to herself. Flower caught on and said, “oh she knows, look at her laughing. Did Sid tell you.”

Sid’s face dropped so quickly.

“Sorry, that’s confidential,” she laughed, barely noticing the change in the captain's mood.

Fuck, why did he have to say that, Bri thought. This is only going to make things worse.

Sid excused himself for a moment, and Bri followed, thinking she could help. But boy was she wrong. When they made it to the washroom doors he turned to her and snapped, “stay the fuck out of my life if you know what’s good for you. You have done enough damage to me, and I am not going to put up with your shit.”

“I did damage to you!? I protected you! You’re the one who did damage to me!” she screamed back, tears forming in her eyes.

“Fuck off,” he huffed, turning into the men’s washroom. She continued to the women’s and locked herself in a stall and cried.

This trip is going to be a long one.
