Love in Heartbreak

Chapter One

It’s been almost two months since I moved to Pittsburgh this summer, and things are finally starting to become routine. It was only temporary for me but things are going good and I’m starting to feel at home. Even though I was a mature, adult woman living with a roommate again it didn’t matter. My roommate, Maggie, is my best friend, has been for years, from the good times and the bad. Right now, one of those bad times was really bad for Maggie, and I needed to be here for her.

She had to move to Pittsburgh because of an amazing job offer she got. But after everything she went through, and was going through, I couldn’t have her go to a place where she really didn’t know anybody. She needed the help, both with moving and mentally. You think as a Physiatrist she would be more mentally stable herself. Although moving back to her childhood town brings a lot of joy to her, she still needs some time to heal and me moving up here to be with her reassures her that after everything this past year she isn’t alone.

“I better get going”, I sighed to myself as I sent the last email for the day. I pulled myself off the couch, put on my shoes, and stepped out the front door. As I was locking the door I saw a man next door unloading shopping bags from his car in the neighboring driveway. It was nice to see that someone was finally living in the house to the right of us. We hadn’t live here long, as Maggie just purchased the place and we had just moved in. We often wondered who lived next door. We never saw any activity coming from that place besides the lawn service and cleaning lady occasionally. Nor once did we see a ‘For Sale’ or ‘Sold’ sign in the yard. I think the man could feel my gaze as he paused what he was doing and waved briefly my way.

Me being from the south, and extremely nosey, I decided to engage in more than just non-verbal communication.

“Hey there! I’m glad to see a new face next door!” I shouted across the small space of grass separating us.

He grinned, “Same goes for you. You’re definitely not the old lady who used to live next door.”

“I’m Mavis, nice to meet you.”

“Sidney”

“Well, I will see you around!” I shouted as I was heading towards my car, not wanting to bother the innocent man any further.

“See ya!” I heard shouted in the distance.

****Sidney’s POV****

It is nice to be back in Pittsburgh, starting to gear up for the season. It is what I lived for, getting back into that routine. I miss my family when I am away, but there is something so homely about being back here, even though I am a little lonelier. I’m friends with guys on the team, but still everyone has their own family.

I pulled into the driveway; I always have to do a little grocery shopping after getting back into town. As I started to take the grocery bags in, I saw movement out of the corner of my eye from next door. I looked up to see a very beautiful, well put together young woman observing me. She was short but well figured with long, wavy, caramel colored hair and golden skin. The old couple next door must have finally sold their house. Not wanting to be rude to my new neighbor, I waved.

Then, a cheery, gentle voice fills the air, “Hey there! I’m glad to see a new face next door!”

It was pleasant to see her face too, “Same goes for you. You’re definitely not the old lady who used to live next door.”

‘God that was a dumb response’, I thought.

“I’m Mavis, nice to meet you.”

“Sidney”

“Well, I will see you around!” she shouted as she was walking away towards her car. God, I blew it! Oh well, she’s probably already married or at the very least has a boyfriend.

“See ya!” I cut the conversation down risking making it anymore awkward.

A few hours later, I got done doing the final bit of unpacking and settling in, now I am tired, not to mention from the travelling today. I’m too unmotivated to cook dinner so I decide to go out and grab something to eat. As soon as I head towards my car I notice a new face at my new neighbor’s house. Suddenly, Mavis comes around from the other side of the SUV and her face lights up.

“Oh, Sidney!” I hear her say with such delight. She quickly grabs the other girl’s hand and starts dragging her my way. “This is my roommate, and best friend, Maggie.”

Maggie was about a half a foot taller than Mavis and not as filled out. She was very slender and frazzled, not as put together, she looked tired and not like a long day but a long year tired.

Mavis continued, “and Maggie this is our mystery neighbor, Sidney.” she said slightly chuckling. Maggie blushed obviously uncomfortable by her more confident friend.

“Nice to meet you Maggie.” I outstretched my hand towards her.

“Nice to meet you too.” Maggie responded in almost a whisper.

Just as I was getting my hopes up that the cute neighbor next door might possibly be single, I hear a child shout.

“Mommy! Mommy!” as a small little boy comes running towards Mavis’s open arms.

Great, I knew it was too good to be true.
