Love in Heartbreak

Chapter Two

****Maivs’s POV****

As I was finishing setting the table for dinner, I couldn’t stop my thoughts from racing. I hope tonight’s dinner with Sidney goes good. Maggie and I don’t know the man that well but he seems like a real gentleman.

He could be really good for Maggie right now, a lot kinder than the man she was last with. After seeing how Maggie was reacting as I was introducing her to Sidney last night, I could tell that Maggie needed a little more help than she used to. I understood that her confidence was shot, after all, her divorce was finalized less than six months ago and man it was an ugly split between her and Evan.

I invited Sidney to join us for dinner this evening in hopes that it would loosen Maggie up a bit. When Sidney shook Maggie’s hand yesterday there was a pure kindness in his bold, brown eyes.

I had sent Maggie upstairs to her room a few hours ago to get ready. She has been on a bit of a sweatpants kick lately. I helped her go through her very expansive wardrobe earlier and we picked out a stunning dress.

It is white lace, it has thin shoulder straps and a deep V-neck, and it falls gently around her slim figure stopping a few inches above her knee. We paired it with a few beautiful gold jewelry pieces and strappy, suede, plumb colored heels.

We don’t typically wear shoes in the house, mainly because I’m an absolute clean freak, but I be damned if I didn’t having her looking her best.

I agreed to dress up with her so I put on my trusty old black dress and nude pumps.
This is the outfit that I wear whenever I have to dress up, black was flattering as it hid more of my curves as I wasn’t as slender as Maggie. The dress has thick shoulder straps and a squared off neck line. It hugged tightly in all the right places right before pulling away from my body upper thigh ending at the upper knee. Around my bust line, I had a gold chained “belt”, this helped break up all the smooth black fabric.

Suddenly, there was a soft knock at the front door. “Come in!”

The door cautiously opened and a well-dressed Sidney walked in. “Hello.”

“I’m in the kitchen, dinner is just about ready.”

I observed him carefully; my friends often trusted my opinion of people. I was almost always right about the kind of character a person was within a few minutes of meeting them. Just because I have good judgement of people though doesn’t always mean I make the right choices.

I continue to examine the man as he kneels down and unties his dress shoes, before taking them off and neatly placing them off to the side of the entryway.

‘How well mannered’, I thought to myself. ‘Not to mention good-looking, but this evening is for Maggie not me’, I try to shake the lustrous thoughts out of my mind.

Sidney walks into the kitchen as I finish tossing the salad.

“What would you like to drink? We have lemon water, milk, Moscato, Guinness, and if you’re feeling really daring hot chocolate.” I joked.

With a smile and a soft chuckle he responded, “Lemon water sounds great to me.”

I took off my apron, setting it on the island and headed towards to fridge to get his drink.

“Maggie will be joining us shortly; she is just finishing getting ready.”

“Okay, where is Sawyer tonight?”

“He is with the nanny for the tonight. It’s no fun for a 3 year old to be attending a dinner party. So it’s better for all of us.” I chuckled as I was handing the glass to him across the island where he took a seat at the barstool.

Just then I heard the echo of heels coming down the stairs and into the kitchen to join us.

Maggie looked stunning, her hair looked like it was from some glamour Hollywood event, the gold jewelry pieces made her dark olive skin pop, and the heels made her ass look fabulous.

Sidney greeted Maggie as we all made our way to the dinner table. We fixed our plates and made some small talk but topics run out quickly, drinks start flowing, and things start to get a little more personal than talking about weather.

“Are you from Pittsburgh, Sidney?” I ask trying not the let the table fall into silence.

“No, I’m actually from Canada, Nova Scotia to be more specific. And you can call me Sid.”

“Oh, really? What brings you here?” Maggie chimes in, obviously interested now.

“Work.” Sidney softly chuckles. “What about you two?” he asks looking in my direction.

Wanting to bring the attention back over to Maggie I respond, “Well, Maggie is from here but recently moved back to the area because of an amazing job she took at the Children’s Hospital downtown.” I say slightly bragging about her.

“Are you a nurse?” he asks now looking back in Maggie’s direction.

“No, I’m actually a Psychiatrist. I assess children that are at risk for mental illnesses.”

“Wow.” Sidney is obviously shocked, “I can’t imagine that’s an easy job.”

“It isn’t but it’s a very rewarding one. I love kids and I love to help people.”

Sidney then quickly turns back to me, “You never said what you do.”

“I have a few businesses that I run. I have a real estate development company and a hospitality company, so the two kind of go hand-in-hand. You never said what you actually do for work.”

Sidney goes wide-eyed and hesitates for second, “Oh, I – umm, I am in the entertainment business.”

A few glasses of wine in and my filter to my mouth from my brain has shut off, I nearly choke on my sip of wine when I had blurted out, “You’re a male stripper?!”

Sidney broke out into a roaring laughter and Maggie’s face fell into her hands. She is obviously embarrassed by me.

When Sidney finally composed himself he answered “No, not exactly. I play hockey.”

“Oh.” I respond shortly so I don’t embarrass Maggie any further.

Dinner started to end and the bottles of wine were nearly empty. We finished talking about our college days and childhoods. From how we first met in elementary school to the time we got arrested in high school all the way up to the college frat parties. Sidney was amused by all the crazy things Maggie and I used to do when we were younger, laughing hysterically at all of our antics. He told us about his up-bringing in Canada and life there.

“Well, I must get going. I have to be up at a decent hour tomorrow morning. Do you need help cleaning up?”

“No, we can handle it. Thank you anyhow.” I say.

We say our goodbyes and Maggie insists on starting to clean up so I walk Sidney to the door.

“I had a really nice night, thank you for having me over. It’s nice to get a home-cooked meal.”

“Of course anytime! It was so nice meeting you and don’t be a stranger.” I say lightly grazing his arm.

His smile lights up and that’s when it happens. He gently leaned down and kissed me on the lips. Before I could process what is happening he pulled away and said, “Goodnight.”

I held myself together not to show how freaked out I was as I shut the door behind him. Not even responding to what he said. The evening was about him and Maggie how the hell did it end up like this? He fucking kissed me! That was my plan for Maggie!

**** Sidney’s POV****

I woke up to my alarm screaming at me. Typically I don’t sleep in but after last night I needed to. I had way too much wine, and I don’t drink wine. But I needed something to loosen me up last night. When I arrived last night Mavis looked fantastic.

I didn’t want to be my usual awkward self around her; she is such a confident person. So after nearly a bottle of wine consumed by myself I was having a blast with Mavis and Maggie. Listening to all their stories and passions, I couldn’t help but be impressed. Women that I usually associate with don’t have much adventure or passions in their lives. Mavis impressed me with the fact that she ran and built several companies from the ground up by herself. You can tell she is very smart, has several college degrees, but she’s so kind and compassionate.

As, I was continuing to think about Mavis it hit me, I kissed her!

I rolled over burying my face into my pillow. ‘I can’t believe I did that!’ I lectured to myself.

I got out of bed moping on my way to the shower. ‘God, she’s never going to want to talk to me again. I’m a fucking idiot. I don’t even think she likes me!’

I get to the rink for practice and I decided to send her a text to see if she was even going to still talk to me.

Me: Hey Mavis, it’s Sid. Thanks again for last night. Next time I host! Have a good day.

Mavis: Wow! You’re up already! Lol. That sounds like a plan then. I look forward to it!

Me: Well, I leave tomorrow for a few days. If you’re not up for dinner tonight maybe we can shoot for next week sometime?

Mavis: I could do tonight but I don’t think Maggie could. Seeing as she is still passed out on the couch. Lol!

Oh shit I had completely forgotten about Maggie.

Me: You and I could get some dinner tonight if Maggie doesn’t want to join.

Mavis: Okay, that can work. Sawyer will have to tag along though.

Me: Not a problem. I’ll meet you over at your place around 7.

Mavis: Perfect! See you tonight.

Practice went great; I had a lot more energy as I was on a high for my dinner plans with Mavis. Afterwards, I hurried to get home as I needed to prepare before my date with Mavis. Well, I think it’s a date. Is it?

Notes

Luckily for you guys, I have been sick and unmotivated to leave my couch this weekend. So I finished a second chapter. I hope you like it!

Plus I've already got some ideas for chapter 3. It will be more about the back story of Mavis, so stay tuned!
