New Year's Eve: Chicago Style!

*ANNIE'S POV*

I had just come back into the room after going to the rest room to recover from Duncan's words, which were still ringing in my head. I mean yea, we flirted with each other all the time, but the way he said it, the way his breath grazed my ear as he did it, it felt more real this time and it sent me reeling.
"Annie!!! Shots!!!" Patrick screamed at me with a bottle of Fireball and 2 shot glasses in his hands as he pulled me over to a table.
"Fuck Pat, you know I hate Fireball, why couldn't you choose vodka for once. Are you trying to kill me best friend?" I laughed as he started pouring the shots.
"Yea, but it loosens you up faster. I need that for what I'm abut to say to you." He said with a laugh.
"Patty cake, you're scaring me. What are you talking about?" I say my laughter quickly fading.
"Let's take the shot and I'll tell you." He says and we quickly throw back the first shot, and Pat immediately refills them. I'm still shaking my head at the taste of the alcohol, when Patrick says, "One more!"
"I'm convinced you hate me now!" I say as I throw back another burning shot.
"Annie, why are you being so stupid?" He says looking straight in my eyes with a serious face. It scares the hell out of me and my face drops.
"What?!?" I manage to squeak out.
Pat looks down at the table and refills the shots. "With Duncan Annie. Why are you being stupid with Duncan?" He says finishing the sentence looking at me again.
"I'm- I'm not being stupid! He's my friend Pat. We're just friends!" I say completely flustered at his statement, especially after what just happened.
"Another shot!" Patrick says and I'm so confused by everything, that I don't even think twice before slamming it down my throat.
"That's bullshit Annie and you know it. He likes you... a lot. He has for a long time. Why won't you let him in? Why won't you try?" Pat says refilling the shot glasses again.
"I've done long distance before Patty cake, remember that? Remember how it turned out? Me alone and my ex with my best friend. It's not that simple Pat. Take another shot." I say as I shake my head.
"Boy plus girl equals love! Those are term you get right? Duncan isn't Mark, Annie." Pat says staring at me with a sympathetic look on his face.
"Pat-" I start.
"Another shot!" he screams. "Why are you so scared of this?" he says after he finishes the shot.
"We both have careers that require us to travel Pat, and I'm still in college. It would be too hard and I don't want to lose him." I say looking down at the empty shot glass as I run a hand thru my hair.
"I really hope you get your head out of your ass soon Annie, because if you don't, I think you're going to lose him anyway." Pat said as he nodded behind me.
I turned around in the chair to see Duncan chatting with a blonde wearing a slinky cocktail dress, who was obviously flirting with him. Rage began to fill my senses, or was it jealousy? Wait, why would I be jealous of her? I didn't want him like that... did I? Turning around, I poured myself another shot and quickly threw it back. I got off the bar stool and made my way over to where Duncan and the blonde were. I ignored the pointed glare from the skimpy blonde and leaned into him on my tiptoes to whisper in his ear.
"I changed my mind. I'll see you at midnight." I said, mimicking the way he said it to me earlier. I pulled away from him and looked into his eyes as I started to back and turn away. I had no idea what I was doing, but I really hoped it wasn't going to backfire on me. I walked back up to the bar and sat down.
"What can I get you?" the bartender asked almost immediately.
"Absolut royal fuck please." I said, resisting the urge to drop my head into my heads on the bar.
