"This Spells Real Danger"

October 2016
Over a year later...

A spine-chilling, yet high-spirited atmosphere hangs in the night of a neighbourhood in Brandon: people dressed up in various costumes are roaming the streets, stopping at houses festooned in frightening decorations from spider webs to skeletons to graves. This is all because of the celebrated holiday: Halloween.

Inside a humbled two-story house in his room, Kale Clague is standing in front of a mirror, preparing himself for the holiday.

With a marker of black face paint, he colours the tip of his nose. “Almost done…and...” He draws three whiskers on each of his cheeks. “...there!”

He caps the markers and places it on his dresser below the mirror. “And then—” He reaches behind his head and pulls up the black hood connected to his black jumpsuit over his head. The hood fits snugly over his voluminous hair, displaying the black cat ears sewn on top of it.

“Tada! I’m a cat!” He raises his gloved hands in the air, gazing at his outfit his mirror can capture: He is wearing a black, velvet jumpsuit with a wired, slim tail peeking out from behind him. His gloves are connected to his outfit in the shape and colours of a cat’s paw.

Kale smiles happily at the mirror. “Yup, looks good.” He waves his paw at it with a playful look. “Meow.”

He shifts back to his excited expression, pressing his paws against their soft palms together. “Okay, now that I’m dressed up, what should I do: trick-or-treat or go to a Halloween party?” He taps his stubble-dotted chin with his paw. “Hmmm, I’ll see what Duker has to say!”

With that, Kale speeds out of his bright room, rushes down the dim hallway, and bursts through a door to his right.

On the other side in his bright room, Reid Duke is lying on his stomach on his bed, immersed in video memes playing on his laptop.

“Duker!” Kale exclaims from the doorway.

Reid instantly perks up with his arched eyebrows raised. “Claguer!” Bewilderment fills his face as he takes in his friend’s feline outfit. “Whhhyyy are you dressed up as a cat?” He peers back up at him. “Is it National Cat Day? Do I have to dress up as a cat?”

Kale gives him back his look. “It’s Halloween.”

“Halloween?” He tilts his head, gazing at him like he just said there’s a national day for raccoon dogs. “Why’re you all dressed up for Halloween?”

“Because it’s Halloween.” Doubt clouds Kale’s face. “Or is it not? Wait…” He shuffles out of the room, leaving Reid alone for a moment.

He quickly returns, this time with his one-piece suit zipped down to his waist, revealing his salmon-colored T-shirt. In his bare hands is his smartphone, which he is gazing at.

“Yes, it is!” Kale reverts his eyes at his friend with a mad look. “It’s the thirty-first of October! That’s Halloween!”

Reid gawks at him. “No, it can’t be, it’s…” His voice fades off as realization appears on his face. “Cheeseburger cupcakes, it is!” He peers down at his drab clothes, which consists of a thick beige sweatshirt and jeans. “Oh my mars, and I am not dressed up!”

He scrambles off of his bed and rushes up to his friend. “I GOTTA DRESS UP, DON’T LOOK!” He shoves Kale through the doorway and slams the door in his face.

Kale stares at the white, wooden door, stunned. He then looks down with knitted eyebrows and scratches his head. “I still don’t know whether to trick-or-treating or go to a party.” He lets out a sigh. “I’ll ask Pat.”

He sticks his hand underneath his folded jumpsuit and slips his phone into his pocket. Then before ambling down the stairs, he zips the suit back up, fitting on his gloves and hood.

In the living room, Nolan Patrick is perched on the sofa, sitting on his folded legs. In front of him, mounted on the wall, is a flat screen television, which is displaying a chick flick.

Nolan is watching attentively, keeping his still eyes on the screen while daintily feeding himself slices of apple coated with almond butter and chocolate chips.

He swallows. “Oh no, you didn’t,” he comments on the screen. He snaps a bite from his apple. “Girl, you better watch out for that—“

“Hey, Pat,” Kale calls out behind him in the dark by the foot of the staircase, “should I—“

Nolan flicks his apple-occupied hand at him, keeping his eyes on the movie. “Not now, I’m busy.”

Knowing that he will not give his attention willingly to anyone else but the film, Kale strides into the living room and steps in front of him, blocking his view of the television. “Should I go trick-or-treating or go to a party?”

With an austere expression, Nolan peeps up at Kale, spotting the light of the screen pulsing from behind him and casting a forbidding shadow over him. “I don’t know, it’s your life.” He places the rest of his apple slice in his mouth.

“Well, what do you wanna do?” He holds his pawed hands out at him. “I’ll do it with you.”

He swallows. “I’m doing what I want to do right now, but you’re in the way.” He then leans to his right, getting a glimpse of the movie.

Kale scoots to his left, aligning himself again with his friend. “Watching a movie? That’s boring, it’s Halloween!” His smile pops on his face. “Let’s go out and get some candy!”

He stares firmly at him. “I can’t even have candy.”

“Okay, we can see all the costumes and decorations!”

Nolan groans and rolls his eyes. “I don’t want to look at costumes and decorations. I want to stay home to watch my movie and not be disturbed.”

Kale gazes at him with sorrow. “You don’t want to celebrate Halloween?”

“No.” Nolan picks up a small apple slice and pops it in his mouth.

“Why?”

He swallows. “Because I don’t want to. I’d rather do this.” He then leans to the left and redirects his focus on the movie.

Kale peers down at him with narrowed eyes, scrambling mentally for a way to convince his friend to partake in his Halloween festivities. Then an idea comes to his mind, causing his eyes to light up.

“Is it because you don’t have a good costume?” he calls out tauntingly, gazing in the opposite direction of him.

Nolan’s eyes widen at the insulting question. He whirls to his right, eyeing him. “What?”

Kale turns to him, concealing his wiliness with an upset look. “You don’t want to go out because you can’t put together a good costume.”

“I can put together a good costume,” he states sharply, crossing his arms.

He leans closer to him, radiating pressure. “Really?”

Nolan rolls his eyes, unfazed by the vibes of provocation. “Duh.”

“Okay then, stop the talk and do the walk.” He straightens up and scans him from head to toe with his hands on his hips. “Let’s see that costume.”

Nolan promptly rises to his feet, revealing his true height, which makes him inches taller than Kale. “You’re on.” Then after switching off the television, he whisks past Kale and sashays to and up the stairs.

Kale follows him with his eyes as a large smile grows on his face. Once Nolan has disappeared on the second floor and the sound of the door slamming shut follows him, Kale pumps his fist in the air.

“Yes!” He lets out excited chuckles.

Instantly, loud, thundering footsteps are heard rumbling through the second-story hallway and down the stairs along with Reid’s hurried announcement: “I’M COMING, I’M COMING, I’M COMING, I’M COMING, I’M COMING, I’M COMING—”

Reid hops over the last two steps and slides in front of Kale with his arms out from his sides. “I’m here!”

Kale gazes at his costume: Reid is still wearing his regular street clothes. The only addition, which considers him to be wearing a costume, is a wearable sandwich board of an upside-down Dairy Queen Blizzard.

Kale gawks at the Halloween attire. “What the heck are you supposed to be?”

“A milker!” He holds his hands from his sides to show the wholeness of his costume with pride.

Kale holds back his laughter by pressing his lips. “You’re seriously a milker?”

He drops his hands, his expression not wavering. “Yeah!”

Kale lets out a few chortles. “Oh my goodness…”

Reid stares at him incredulously. “What did you expect me to be in: a knight suit or something?”

“Uh, no, no, no—” He shakes his head. “I-I should’ve seen this coming…” He then takes in a deep breath, calming himself down.

Reid then spins around, scanning the dim surroundings. “Where’s Doctor Pat?” He faces his friend with concern.

“He’s getting ready.” He nods his head behind him at the staircase.

Reid’s eyes widen with delight. “He’s actually going?”

He leans closer to him and whispers, “I tricked him into going.” He flashes him a big, opened smile.

Reid’s face turns into a stunned expression. “Ooo, you sly Kale Chips!” He makes a mischievous look, poking Kale’s upper arm with two pointer fingers. “Doctor Pat’s gonna explode when he finds out.”

“Hey, the more, the merrier!” He pulls away, holding his hands out from his sides. “I want everyone to have a fun time at Halloween!” He drops his hands. “So, what do you think we should do: trick-or-treat or party?”

“Hmmm…” Reid drums his fingers against the front of his Blizzard with his eyes cast down in deep thought. “Both?”

Kale shakes his head with his black nose scrunched and pressed lips. “We’d be rushing things. I wanna do either one or the other.” A look of hope then crosses his face. “Or can we actually do both?”

Immediately, a door opening is heard echoing from upstairs, followed by soft footsteps descending. The two friends turn around and peer up at the source of the sound.

Stepping down the staircase gracefully is the one and only Nolan Patrick. He is now wearing his costume, which consists of an elegant, black three-piece suit with a black bow tie, white handkerchief, black dress pants, and dress shoes. Snugged around his eyes is a delicate black masquerade mask bearing exquisite silver designs around the two holes his striking eyes stare out from.

He touches down to their level and ambles up to Kale. “And you said I couldn’t get a costume together.” He places his hands on his hips with a haughty aura. “I won.”

“Yes!” Kale pumps his paws in the air in victory. “Now we can all go out!”

Nolan gapes at him in pure confusion as he drops his hands. “Wait, what—?”

Reid slips up to him with an impish grin. “Kale Chips tricked you,” he explains in a taut voice filled with anticipation.

Instantly, fury floods his face. “You TRICKED ME!” He whirls around and slaps his hand across Kale’s painted face.

Kale stumbles back due to the force, engulfed in a fit of giggles. “Hah, hah, hah, hah, I had too!” He jabs a finger at him with a thrilled expression. “Your pride got the best of you!”

“Hey, at least I still have the best costume here!” He brushes his fingers through his flawless dark blond hair.

“Well, you wouldn’t win a skeleton beauty contest,” Reid points out, pointing at him.

Nolan gazes at him in confusion behind his mask. “Why?”

“Because the winner is no body!”

Silence fills the house for a moment. Then Kale breaks it by snickering.

Nolan holds a hand up at the milker. “Shmooker, no.”

“Another one, another one—”

Nolan whirls to Kale and shouts, “No!”

“You should start worrying when a zombie starts singing ‘Footloose,’” Reid continues on with a kooky smile.

With that, Kale bursts into a series of laughter, throwing his head back with his shoulders by his ears.

Nolan, on the other hand, is far from amused, glowering at the jokester through his mask. “Okay, shmooker, thank you, now shut it.”

Reid leans his head toward his. “Sorry that my puns are—” He whips out a sheet of paper from behind his sign. “—tear-iffying.” He tears the paper in half.

“Ugh.” He rests his head in his hands.

Kale is now taking deep breaths, attempting to regain his composure. “Okay, okay.” He lets out a sigh and lumbers back to his friends. “Whew. So—uh—what should we do: trick-or-treat or party?”

“None of the above,” Nolan replies bluntly.

“That’s right!” Reid zips up between the two and wraps each of his arms around their shoulders, pulling them close to him. “Because I know exactly where to go!”
