"Beware Of Green"

Later that day after a Flyers’ preseason practice, Nolan is strutting down players’ parking lot in his business suit. He nonchalantly passes by the row of his teammates’ scattered cars.

Yet his eyes are filled with suspicion. He gazes around his surrounds to confirm that there is no person in his presence in order to activate his glider in peace.

“Nolan!”

Nolan’s face instantly falls flat with annoyance as he hears footsteps quickly rushing up to him. He spins around on his heels, spotting the familiar owner of the voice.

“Nolan!” Carter, also in his own business attire, halts in front of him in a hasty manner.

Nolan has sharp eyes on him. “What?”

“Uh—” The goalie straightens up and runs his fingers through his hair. “—do you wanna come over to my place?”

Nolan shoots him a look of disgust. “No.”

“There’s something I gotta talk to you about.”

“I’m not interested.” Nolan turns back around and resumes his trek.

“It’s about your thoughts on your haters,” he hears Carter state.

Nolan instantly freezes in his tracks at the words. His heart skips a beat as his mind scrambles for an explanation of how he acquired such information.

“How does that concern you in any way?” Nolan snaps ahead of him, maintaining his stiff composition.

From behind him, Carter proceeds to smoothly slip his smartphone out of his pocket. “Well, you did say some pretty cruel stuff about them.” He taps on its screen multiple times.

“I’ve never talked about them before!” he spits out, slightly turning his head to look at him from the corner of his eye.

Carter simply responds by playing the video and holding the phone by his head for the owner to hear loud and clear.

Nolan’s eyes fly open him in shock. He whirls around to face the goalie again, automatically staring at his video.

Taking in his video, his look of distress transforms into fury. He strides up to him with hands as fists.

“How did you get this video?!” He rips the phone out of his grasp and jabs his finger at the pause button.

Carter calmly releases green-coloured magic around his hand and flicks it at his phone.

The phone springs from Nolan’s hands, coated in the same energy, and flies back toward its owner’s grasp.

Carter catches it with a smirk etched on his face, having the energy dissolve on contact. “You know my ways.”

Nolan keeps his hands as fists by his sides. “I never shared it with anyone!”

The goalie peers at his phone slyly before turning back to the forward. “It’s magic, darling.”

“Well, use your magic to delete it!” He thrusts his pointer finger at the smartphone. “Now!”

Carter furrows his eyebrows at him. “No. It’s on my phone, I can do whatever I want with it.” He lowers it from his head to the front of his chest.

“But it’s MY video! Delete it!”

Carter narrows his eyes at him with a slight look of pity. “Ooo, this is what happens when you act so irrational, eh?” He tosses his phone in the air and back into his hand in a taunting manner.

“I was mad!” He throws his hands in the air. “What they said about me was way beyond rude! But now I know that video I did was stupid so that’s why I didn’t post it up!” He reverts his hands to him. “There!”

Carter nods his head, subtly accepting his attempt at appearing innocent. “That’s good. Good to know you’re in your right mind because you’ll need it just right about now.”

“You’re not in your right mind because you’re not deleting the video!” Nolan jabs an angry finger at him.

He flicks his eyes down at his phone. “I’ll delete it. But…” He turns back to face him. “...you need to do something for me in return.”

Nolan gawks at him in disbelief. “What?!”

Carter smirks as he pulls his phone back over his shoulder. “You heard me: you do me a favour and I’ll delete it. But if you refuse, I’ll just upload it to your account right away.”

“You can’t post stuff on my account!”

“I got your video without you sharing it at all, what makes you think I can’t access your account?” Carter lowers his phone and releases wispy curls of green energy to wrap from his hands to his phone.

“Hadn’t you heard of this thing called—oh, I don’t know—privacy?!” he shouts at him, not paying attention to the magic being performed in front of him.

Carter flicks his eyes back up to him with raised eyebrows. “You can have your privacy if you abide by my favour.”

“Fine.” Nolan crosses his arms with a cross look. “What do you possibly want me to do?”

Carter’s energy dissolves; he keeps a serious look at him. “Give me yourself.”

Confusion slowly grows on Nolan’s face. “Wait, what?”

Behind the two, a sheet of green magic wraps around the scenery, transforming it into a dim room made of brick walls which contrasts with the bright early afternoon of outside.

Carter clasps his hands with his phone behind his back and begins circling around him to the rhythm of his clarification: “Give me your appearance, your mein, your physiology, yourself." He twirls around to a halt, stopping in front of him to face him. “That’s it. And the video will be gone.”

Nolan’s jaw begins to drop as his eyes stare at him in horror. “What? Are you crazy? That’s impossible!”

“Not with a bit of magic, dear.” With his free hand in the air, Carter rubs his fingers together, releasing a sprinkle of sparkling, brilliant green embers. “I’ve been practicing for years.”

With anxiety evident in his expression, Nolan places his hands on his chest. “But what’s gonna become of me—myself—if you do that?”

The goalie carelessly flicks his wrist in front of him. “Don’t worry, I got that covered. I just want…” He places his hand on Nolan’s shoulder. “...you.”

Nolan eyes the hand on his shoulder with building fear. “I-I can’t give you that.” He stares at him, feeling himself crippling to the distress of the situation.

“Okay, I’ll just upload your video and let the whole world see what type of person you really are.” Carter holds his phone in the air once again and shakes it. “The haters will love the credible source for their statements.”

“No!” Nolan throws his palms out at him in fear. “Please! Don’t!”

The goalie lowers his phone with a growing smirk. “Then give me yourself.”

Nolan throws his hands back to his sides as fists in tangled anger. “You’re blackmailing me!”

He maintains his haughty composure. “You don’t say…!”

“Stop it!”

Feeling the pain of the circumstance weighing on him, Nolan shoves his hands against the goalie’s chest. “Can’t we just settle this some other way?!” He peers back up at him with helpless eyes and his rosy cheeks now fiery.

Carter gazes at him with a softer expression. “Oh, poor Nolan, he’s finally cornered and feels the pressure.” He pats his head firmly. “There, there.”

“That’s not fair!” Nolan swats his hand away.

The goalie quickly retracts his hand away with a sharp look. “Nothing in life is fair, Nolan,” he spits out. “I learned that the hard way.”

“Delete the video!” Nolan bawls back at him.

“After you give me yourself.” Carter holds his phone back up over his shoulder. “Then I’ll delete it as promised.” He peers at his phone to hover his thumb over the post button. “Or else I’ll just upload it.” He turns back to face him.

With a clenched jaw, Nolan silently eyes the thumb inches away from the pixelated post button.

“So, what’s your decision?” The goalie pulls his thumb away from the screen. “Give me your whole self…” He slowly turns to look at his phone as he lowers his thumb toward the button. “...or watch your reputation crumble in front of your eyes beyond repair?”

Nolan is tense, his breathing quickens, his cold fists begin to sweat.

Carter’s thumb inches little by little toward the button.

Nolan keeps his eyes on the thumb as his mind swirls in floods of the situation’s horrific outcomes.

Carter’s eyes narrow as a smirk forms on his face once again. His thumb slightly grazes the smooth surface of the bright screen.

“FINE!” Nolan blurts out, throwing hands upward. His arms fall limp back to his side as he silently processes his answer with heavy breathing and his head dipped down.

He flicks his eyes back at Carter, softening his expression as he calms down. “Fine,” he repeats gentler. “You can have me.”

Carter replies with a smirk. He lowers his phone while pulling his thumb away from the screen.

“Great to hear that.” He slips his phone back into his dress pants’ pocket. “We have a deal then.” He holds his hand out at the forward.

Nolan eyes his hand in fright. Carter’s hand now has majestic, vivid green energy swirling around it, making it glow.

“You shake it,” he hears Carter state. “Like what you do with any deal.”

Nolan keeps his eyes on the mesmerizing churning of the green energy. He slowly raises his hand from his side and holds it out at the magical hand. Then with a sharp inhale, he jabs his hand at Carter’s hand, grasps it, and gives it a shake.

Instantly, the green energy from Carter’s hand jumps to Nolan’s hand, wrapping around his wrist and up his arm like a growing ribbon.

Nolan’s gasp is caught in his throat due to the pure terror of the energy flying up toward him and his own hand glowing.

Suddenly, the ribbon launches behind Nolan and expands, sweeping around the two teammates in the form of a circle. It continues its streak around the room, increasing in speed and expansion as it strengthens.

With its gathering velocity, it creates swirls of wind, whipping through the teenagers’ hair and clothes. The energy increases in size steadily, covering the walls from their view and enclosing them in its circle little by little.

Nolan stares at the goalie with wide eyes as the wind flies through his hair and whips his tie. He is frozen with trepidation at the howling of the energy’s wind and the surge of the energy building around and inside him.

Carter, on the other hand, has a stern expression with a slight smirk as the wind flutters his hair and blazer.

Green energy grows around Carter, taking the shape of his outline, as his eyes behind turning white with the same green outline. The energy increases in its strength and radiance, cloaking him in its blinding whiteness.

With a sharp gust of wind, his outline disintegrates into sparks of energy, being sucked away with the flow of the gust.

Nolan jolts as he feels Carter’s firm grasp collapse into a fizzy sensation against his own hand. He snaps his eyes up and watches the sparks get taken up into the whirlwind of the energy.

The energy is now spinning around him at its highest speed and strength with streaks of bright mint green, vivid green, and pure white. His eyes are lost in the spellbinding texture and colours of the energy as it revolves around him.

Suddenly, the energy takes a new route: With its other end, it sweeps around the room once more before driving itself straight at Nolan and into his chest.

“AAARRRAAAHHH!” Nolan caves inward as the energy thrusts itself inside of him.

The energy twists and turns sharply inside of him as it expands within, shooting itself in all directions in the form of potent surges.

Nolan tumbles on his knees with his fists on his chest as the last of the energy is sucked into him. His eyes are squeezed tight at the piercing pain, his teeth are bared and clenched, his head is dipped down, his body is tense, his mind is churning as the energy weaves through it.

Immediately, the intense atmosphere of the magical deal vanishes as the last energy disappears inside the forward. The room relaxes with sunlight fading into view, softly shining down on the lonely forward.

With steady breathing, he keeps his kneeling position, only showing the top of his dark blond-covered head. He then slowly lifts his head up. His eyes are closed on his relaxed face.

Then he snaps his eyes open. They are no longer his familiar striking, clear light blue eyes; they are white with the familiar green energy glowing around them.
