AAOOOSC! Wheatie Bits!

"Meeting Reid"

The Canadian autumn air is warm and comfortable as the three friends are sitting on a wooden park bench in a park. The sun is shining radiantly in the afternoon, its rays peeking between the colourful leaves belonging to a tree looming behind them. They are happily consuming their desserts altogether while conversing.

“Well, we made a new friend and found out why Pat can’t have ice cream or pizza,” Kale starts off with a content smile, scraping the bit of his milkshake at the bottom of his cup.

“It must be the reason why he’s so bitter,” Reid remarks with a leer aimed at him from the other side of the bench.

A smirk forms on Nolan’s face as he holds up a spoonful of the icy, pale yellow dessert from a dainty, small clear bowl. “Lemon flavoured…!” He slips the spoon into his mouth.

Kale then turns to his left to face Reid. “So, how are you liking Brandon?” He takes in a spoonful of his milkshake.

Nolan leans forward to get a good look of the new teammate. “It’s in my home province, so you better like it.”

Reid swallows some of his milkshake directly from the cup. “I’m actually having fun with you guys—” He brings down the cup from his face, revealing a fresh milkshake mustache. “—way more fun than all my years with the Hurricanes. I’m glad I was thrown into this trade!” He then wipes the milkshake off his face with the back of his hand.

“Awww, that’s what I like to hear!” Kale happily slings his arm around his shoulder.

Nolan swallows another bit of his granité before leaning over once again to shoot a sweet smile at Reid. “Well, I’m glad you like to hang out with us. I must say, you’re not too bad yourself.”

Reid gives him a big, closed smile. “Oh, thanks!”

“Cherish that compliment,” Kale urges him with raised eyebrows, pointing his spoon at him. “He doesn’t give them out much.” He brings the spoon back to his cup.

“Even if it doesn’t seem like it, I’m grateful for both of you boys.” Nolan scrapes up another chunk of the crystal-like dessert. “We have a couple more years together until we make our way to the NHL.” He takes in the spoonful.

Reid nonchalantly drinks from his cup and brings it down. “I already got drafted.”

Instantly, the two younger teammates’ jaws dropped as their eyes fly open. “WHAT?!”

“Where to?” Kale adds in, stunned, as he slips his arm off from his shoulder.

“Minnesota.” He takes another gulp of his milkshake.

An elated expression comes across Nolan’s face. “OMG, no way! That’s so amazing!” He reaches over and pats his shoulder. “Why didn’t you ever tell us?”

Reid shrugs, not even displaying half of the excitement his other two friends have. “I’m still in the junior leagues.”

“But that’s a great accomplishment!” Kale continues on, upbeat. “You should be proud of that!”

Reid dejectedly peers down at his warmed, soupy milkshake. “Yeah, I am. I’m just waiting for my big breakthrough…” He lifts his longing eyes up at the two. “Getting drafted is one thing, actually playing in the NHL is another.”

Nolan gives him a large, reassuring grin. “I know you’ll be big one day.”

“Yeah, be the face of a team!” Kale pipes in, wrapping his arm around him once again.

Reid lowers his eyes back on his sad milkshake and dips his spoon into it multiple times. “I dunno, the Wild’s already got Parise…”

“Probably you’d end up in some team we don’t even know of.” Nolan rolls his eyes at his silly prediction inspired by Reid’s selfsame personality.

Kale chuckles in response with his spoon filled with his milkshake by his mouth. “Sounds like a Duker thing alright.” He takes in the spoonful.

“Actually,” Reid starts off matter-of-factly, “my friend, David, said that.”

They two friends revert their attention to him in confusion and suspicion.

“But he lost his ID, so now we call him ‘Dav.’”

With that, Kale lets out a snort before throwing his head back in laughter.

Meanwhile, Nolan is gawking at him, awfully irresolute. “Was that a pun?”

Reid responds with a mighty big beam.

He rolls his eyes, becoming unamused. “Oh my goodness.”

Kale takes in a deep breath, attempting to collect himself. He turns to Reid, letting out bits of laughter. “Did that really happened or—?”

“No, no,” Reid says sincerely, shaking his head slowly, “I don’t know anyone named David who lost his ID. It’s a pun.”

Nolan stares at him with a subtle scowl. “Are you gonna be doing those more often?”

He clicks his tongue and points his two pointer fingers at him with a cocky expression. “You got that right, Doctor Pat.”

Nolan lets out a heavy huff. “Goodness.”

“I like that!” Kale exclaims with amusement in his eyes toward him. “Another one, another one!”
Reid leans away from him while rubbing his hands. “Okay, okay—”

“No, no, that’s enough,” Nolan interjects, reaching a hand across Kale and toward him as a signal to stop, “thank you.”

Kale straightens himself to stare ahead of him at the park. He has a downcast expression. “Aw, man.”

Reid turns to Nolan and remarks wittily, “Sorry that my puns are punacceptable.”

A smile pops onto Kale’s face as chuckles escape from him.

“Shmooker...!” Nolan cries out.

Reid’s smirk continues to grow on his face. “Don’t worry, I have plenty up my sleeve!” He pulls back his T-shirt sleeve, revealing slips of papers bearing the word “puns” taped on the inside of his sleeve

With that, Kale leans back against the bench backrest once again, letting out his loud, joyous chortles. His milkshake is grasped in his two hands against his lap as his shoulders are up to his ears.

Nolan is now giving a hard stare at the jokester. “Who have I made friends with?” he mutters.

Reid leans over to him, craning his upper body in front of Kale. “The Dukester!” He flashes him a big, kooky grin.

“Get-get away…” Nolan plasters his free hand against the side of Reid’s face as he turns his own head away from him. “I’m done with you.” He pushes him away gradually.

Kale lets out massive exhale, staring at the blue sky, exhausted. “Ah, okay, I think I’m fine—” His eyes widen in pain. “Oh, my stomach, owww…” He clutches onto his stomach with his free hand and leans over.

Nolan gives him a concerned expression. “You’re alive?”

“Yeah-ah...aaahhh…,” he groans. He then straightens up with a sharp inhale. “Too much laughing… But I’m good.”

Reid pats Kale’s back with a delightful smile. “The more you laugh, the longer you live.” He turns to Pat with a chaffing expression. “We gotta make the most of Doctor Pat’s presence in his short life.”

Nolan lets out a scoff. “I’m limited edition.” He then holds his granita below his face. “Yet, even with the pun—or should I say puns—this has been a great day.” A big grin appears on his face as he lifts his bowl in the air. “Cheers to our friendship and our future!”

Kale and Reid hold up their cups of milkshakes and shout in unison. “Cheers!”

They then clink their desserts against each other, marking a milestone of their new, budding friendship.
