Why We Call Each Other

Made That Way

“Bet you don’t even know how I’m hanging onto every word you say. Every touch it damn near kills me, never thought that anybody would make me wanna slow and stay, but baby, you’re made that way…”

The time in between coming home from Canada and leaving for Sundance was incredibly short, which was hard considering Charlotte and Darcy hadn’t really had any solid alone time in weeks. The entirety of the week in Canada was spent doing things with the family. And she couldn’t even really be angry for that. Darcy didn’t get to see his family very often, and so when he did, he wanted to be able to pack in as much time with them as humanly possible. Plus he saw Charlotte all the time, so she understood the need.

Still flying to Park City by herself was pretty disheartening. She’d meet up with some of her friends, and so wouldn’t be alone the entire time, but it wasn’t really the same. With Toronto, not only had Darcy been able to experience that with her, he was able to see what her world could really be about. It could be this amazing whirlwind of attention and cameras and people wanting to get to know her, but it could also be the feeling of disappointment of never getting the recognition she thought she and her friends deserved.

Charlotte hoped Darcy would get to come up for at least a day. Whether or not her film would be screening or if it was the day of the awards, she just wanted to be able to show Darcy what Sundance was all about. But she doubted that would be the case as she landed in Utah and couldn’t get a hold of Darcy for the rest of the day. Thankfully Peter and Lindsay were waiting for her in the lobby of their hotel, excited to greet her with open arms.

Traditionally, shorts didn’t get much attention at the festival compared to features. As such, their film would be screening tomorrow and a few days after that, the award ceremony for shorts would take place. Then features would get the run of the town and the media. Charlotte would be back home in just a few days, but still, she hoped Darcy could make it to the festival for at least a day. If for no other reason than to put on his Emporio Armani suit.

That first night, despite enjoying the company of her friends, Charlotte retired fairly early. It was partly because she was tired and wanted to be refreshed for the following day, but it was also partly because Darcy was calling and she wanted to have time to chat with him. Although it wasn’t like she was going to be more well-rested the following day after talking to Darcy. Their seemingly innocent conversation quickly took a different turn. Charlotte looked at her phone display, which showed they’d only been on the phone for ten minutes before Darcy asked her to touch herself. It was a request she was more than willing to comply to. And fifteen minutes after that, by just being a soothing voice in her ear telling her what to do, he got her off. Afterwards, she insisted that he let her be the voice in his ear so he could get his own release. But he resisted and told her that he hoped she knew he would do anything in his power to join her in Utah at some point. He didn’t know for how long, or if it’d be on a day where anything important was happening, but he was going to do his damnedest to get there.

The entirety of the next day was spent with Lindsay and Peter. They were going over their game plan for the film’s premiere that night. With the three of them being the only people representing their movie, they hashed out which publications they’d talk to, and which people they’d make a point to talk to. By the time they all felt comfortable enough with what was going to happen, they began getting ready for the day.

In a navy gown, donning the jewels Darcy had gotten her for Christmas, Charlotte slid out of the town car and waited for her friends to join her. They all took a deep breath and started their trek down the red carpet, taking note of all the marks taped to the ground indicating where they should stand for the press to take pictures of them. Charlotte was the first to step up to a reporter, eager to get this over with so she could be inside the theater and seeing how the film was received by the audience. Unlike Toronto, where Darcy was beside her, guiding her down the carpet, keeping her present and grounded, she was left to her own devices here at Sundance. And because of that, it felt like it took forever.

After coming to terms with the fact that their film had been a massive hit at the festival, Charlotte, Lindsay, and Peter spent all of the following day drinking. It was going to be their one day to let loose, because by tomorrow night, they’d learn if the showing was good enough to get some recognition and awards. By the time Charlotte had her sixth drink and stumbled into the next bar, she decided that if she wanted to be alive for tomorrow, she’d better start sobering up. From then on, it was glasses of water until she though she was going to explode.

When she got back to her hotel room that night, she took a cold shower, which served to do the rest of the sobering up for her. And by the time she got out, she felt good as new, with the exception of a faint, dull headache. She slid on a thong and a sports bra, and threw her hair up in a messy bun just before she heard a knocking at her door. Because the person on the other side, didn’t make their presence known, she doubted it was a hotel employee and thought it was much more likely that it was one of her friends.

She searched frantically for something to wrap herself in other than her dripping wet towel, and finally managed to find her satin kimono. Charlotte slipped it over her shoulders as the person at the door knocked again. She secured it around herself before running towards the door and opening it the tiniest amount possible to peek out. Her face stretched into a smile when she saw Darcy leaning against the doorjamb, grinning like a fool.

Charlotte swung the door open and jumped into his arms, kissing his neck as it was the first bit of skin her lips touched. He stretched his neck out to give her more space while simultaneously shuffled her back into the room. She backed up and got a good look at Darcy, falling more in love with him with every glance.

“I got your text. I knew everyone would love your movie,” he hung up the garment bag that had been slung over his forearm. When he turned back around, Charlotte had already gotten back on the bed, sitting crosslegged.

“I wish you could’ve heard it, Darc. It ended and people went crazy.” She touched her head, still trying to make sense of it.

Darcy came and laid down on the bed, resting on his side, “of course they did. You’re amazing; your movie is amazing.” He reached forward and squeezed her thigh.

Charlotte grinned and at his touch, she crawled over and curled into his body. She let out a long breath and ran her fingers through his hair, “I’m so happy you made it.”

“I told you I would,” he leaned forward and kissed her. As much as he would’ve loved to get the full details on the screening, he couldn’t deny how badly he wished to be inside her. And he doubted she could deny that too.

He kissed her again and rolled over until his body straddled her. Overall, he was way more dressed than she was, and was even more so when Darcy tugged on the satin tie at her waist. It pulled loose and the kimono fell away from her body against the bed. Darcy grinned and lowered his head, dragging his lips over her chest, moving down to her breast, teasing it beneath her sports bra, and moved lower still to her stomach.

Charlotte let out a gentle moan and looked down at Darcy, lifting her hips off the bed and into his body. He lifted his head and pushed her back down. Despite his desire, he was going to drag this out and make it amazing for her. He spread her legs apart and pushed them back, dropping his waist to hers, rubbing his semi-hard cock against her. Darcy thrust his hips forward, teasing her as though he were actually inside of her, and chuckled when her mouth dropped open, feeling the friction against her.

“Fuck, that’s so hot,”

Darcy laughed and released one of her legs, using his now free hand to lower the zipper on the front of her sports bra. With that undone, it too fell away from her body with ease, releasing her breasts. The once fabric covered skin was now covered with gentle kisses as Darcy made his way down her body and rested at her hip. He nudged her underwear lower, smiling as her body reacted with a shiver when he kissed her inner thigh.

“You wearing that navy dress tomorrow?” He whispered in between kisses. Just when he thought Charlotte might respond, he planted his lips over clit and kissed it softly.

The air left Charlotte’s lungs and she reached down, placing her hand on his head to get a grip of herself. Once she managed to, she nodded, “in preparation of you making it.” She opened her mouth again, this time with the full intent to moan as Darcy slid his tongue from her entrance up to her clit. “Matching your suit,” she panted, tugging at his hair.

He closed his mouth around her, moaning quietly when she shifted her body down closer to his mouth. She looked at him and smiled finding that when he looked back at her, her cheeks got hot. He could send her reeling with one look. Darcy moved his mouth from her clit and bit her inner thigh. Charlotte squealed and giggled, and because of that, Darcy pulled his mouth away from her and placed his hands on either side of her waist.

“No, no,” she panted, placing a hand back on his head, “put your mouth back.”

Darcy giggled and kissed her thigh once before setting his lips back over her clit. He pressed his fingers against her and shut his eyes as he sunk his middle finger into her. Charlotte let out a gentle moan and arched her back off the bed. And when Darcy was convinced she could take it, he added his ring finger and turned his hand palm up. Charlotte lifted her fist up to her mouth and bit the back of her hand.

Sitting in the theater, Charlotte looked up at the stage without really thinking about anything. The presenters were going through the motions of calling out the winners of the short film competition. Peter had won for best cinematography, and honestly, that was more than any of them had ever expected. The rival films had shown better and beat them out at other festivals, and Charlotte expected that to be much of the same here at Sundance. So when Peter won, she got up on her feet and hollered for him. The boy deserved it. He had created art.

When it got around to naming the best short film, Charlotte was thinking of an exit plan. Which hands would she have to shake? Which cheeks would she have to kiss? The presenter was winding down her speech, Darcy was holding Charlotte’s hand, and then she heard the strangest sounding word come out of the presenter’s mouth.

“Asylum,”

Charlotte looked up at Darcy, who was already halfway in for a kiss. He planted one on her and nudged her up. It was the encouragement she needed to get walking towards the stage. On her way down the aisle, Charlotte locked eyes with Lindsay and Peter, and they all had the same look on their face. Was this real life?

Up on stage, Charlotte hugged the presenter before taking the award from her. And once she had, the only thing left to do was stand at the microphone and give an acceptance speech. The only problem… never in a million years did she think this was possible, so never in a million years did she think to prepare one.

Charlotte stared down at the trophy for a moment before refocusing her eyes out at the crowd she couldn’t even make out. “The first rule of film school is don’t make period pieces. They’re too expensive and no one cares what you have to say. Well Professor Arbogast, that period piece got us here and I think they’re listening.” She had to pause as the audience cheered for her. “Asylum only got made because of my talented friends, who agreed to bring this story to life and not get paid for it. They offered every little bit of themselves to this movie knowing I couldn’t give them anything more than a resume credit. So thank you for your dedication and talent. Thank you to the panel here at Sundance for allowing a bunch of college grads to still believe they can be artists. And thank you to Darcy. Your pride and faith in me and this art form has kept me going.”

Charlotte lifted the award and said thank you one last time before gracefully walking off stage before the music cut her off.
