A Prey Among Predators
After Dinner...
Under the clear afternoon skies, Carter’s small car pulls up to Nolan’s cute house.
Carter pushes the gear to park and turns to the passenger. “Here you go.”
Nolan smiles. “Thanks!”
He then opens the door and hops off the car. Behind him, Carter slips outside as well, rounds his car, and speeds in front of him. He halts at the gate and holds it open.
Nolan can’t help but giggle at Carter’s act of chivalry. “Thanks.”
He then whisks past him and down the short walkway before stepping up the porch to his door.
Carter springs up to his porch as well and stands next to him. His hands are stuffed in his pants’ pockets.
“I’ll see you tomorrow at practice?” he asks.
Nolan shoots him a look of confusion. “No breakfast?”
He sighs. “Well, I wanna go to the aquarium tomorrow before practice to relax and...I know you don’t like it.”
“Oh, okay.”
“But we’ll definitely have lunch afterward.” Carter nudges him with his elbow. “Okay?”
He gives him a sweet smile. “Sure.”
“Cool.”
Carter then pulls Nolan into a sweet, tight hug. He has a large, closed smile stretched on his face; his eyes are squeezed closed, his head is on his shoulder, his hands are on his shoulder blades.
Nolan has large eyes lost ahead. His hands sticking out in front of him. He is frozen at the unexpected hug.
“Thank you…” Carter pulls away and gazes at him with a warm smile. “...for being my best friend. I’ve never had a friend like you.”
Nolan blinks, snapping his muscles out of their frozen state. He looks up at him and forces a large closed smile. “I’m flattered. You’re welcome though.”
Carter then drifts down the stairs, slightly backward. He waves out to him. “Bye, Patty!”
Nolan gives him a shy wave of his fingers. “Bye, Carts.” He then whirls around, throws the door open, and flies through the doorway. The door shuts behind him.
