A Prey Among Predators

Interrogation Room…

Under the spotlight, Captain Skinner sits at a table, holding a slip of paper. His eyes scan through the paper as he reads out loud:

“The feral penguins’ fish supply from the city’s aquarium was stolen by Nico Hischier and Jesperi Kotkaniemi and placed in Carter Hart’s apartment around five-thirty in the morning. Zach Lauzon, Niclas Almari, Renārs Krastenbergs, and Connor Hall discovered that the fish supply was missing at seven o’clock; that is the same time Hart was exiting the aquarium. With the knowledge of Hart’s jokes of stealing the feral penguins’ fish, the colony assumed it was him and held him back from exiting to reason with him. Ultimately, Hart was arrested for theft and violent attack in his animal form.

“The following day around eleven in the morning, his cell was found empty. The guards reported they sensed pheromones, which barred them from taking action against the escape. Pheromones were also present in Hart’s scent trail.

“The following day, around seven o’clock, authorities found Hart along with Hischier, Kotkaniemi, Heiskanen, and Patrick by the city’s ice rink. Hart was arrested for the same crimes, including escapage, and Hischier, Kotkaniemi, and Heiskanen were arrested for assault, kidnapping, unwillful implementation of the feral state, and also now, the usage of pheromones.

“However, it has been proven by the usage of pheromones and fingerprints that Hart did not steal any of the fish supply. Therefore, he is let go, free of charges. There were many claims that Heiskanen was innocent, particular spoken out by Patrick. With that, as a sign of apology, Lauzon and his colony paid the bail for Heiskanen.”

The spotlight fades away as the house lights brighten, illuminating the dull interrogation room.

Captain Skinner places the paper on the table and looks ahead. “I would’ve never have thought those two cases went together like that.”

Standing at the other end of the table is Officer Dubois. “That’s why we have detectives and trails, captain.”
