Falling Fast and Breathing Hard

Underneath It All

I woke up to Kris' arms around me and my huge stomach. I stirred, causing him to wake up; he groaned.

"Good morning, Kris."

"No." he muttered.

"No? Why no?"

"I don't wanna get up yet."

"It's 9, Kris."

"Argh."

I laughed.

"Well, don't ya wanna kiss your beautiful girlfriend?"

He then unwrapped his arms and sat up, so I could move. He kissed me as soon as I laid on my back.

"I love you." I said, looking up at him.

"I love you, too."

I captured my lips in his and pulled on his hair.

"Hungry?" he asked.

"Mmhmm...." I said before proceeding to bite his lip.

"Fuck." he said as his fingers pressed into my back.

"Would you like to?"

"Your mom's two rooms away."

"Damnit..."

He just laughed at me. I gave him the look.

"If she wasn't here, we could."

"Kris, she's gonna be here through New Year's..." I whined.

"We'll figure something out."

"Shower?"

He smirked.

"Now, that's an idea."

"I am so smart."

"You can say that again."

We went back to kissing, but only seconds later, I heard my mom walk down the hall.

"Guess it's time to get up." I mumbled against his neck.

"We have to sometime."

After taking a quick pee break, we walked out of our room.

"Morning Mom!" I greeted, seeing her in the living room.

"Good morning, Athena. Good morning, Kris."

"Good morning, Mrs. Halloway."

I loved the fact that she took back my father's surname. It made me think my dad was still alive, and not to mention, it just felt right.

"How'd ya sleep last night, Mom?"

"Wonderfully. It felt like sleeping on a cloud." she said dramatically.

I laughed.

"So Kris, great game last night. You should've heard and seen Athena last night. She was hilarious."

I buried my face in his chest.

"Really? What'd she do that was so hilarious?"

And of my mom went on with how I was throughout the entire game. Kris couldn't help but laugh.

"...and she was adorable during the shootout...."

Then, he pulled my chin up and kissed me.

"I love you." he said.

"I love you, too."

My mom looked away and smiled.

"Well, Mom, what do you want to do today?"

"Ice-skating?"

I gulped. I had never skated before because I was too scared. My mom on the other hand, learned to ice-skate when she was a kid but hasn't since before my parents met.

"Sure. Sounds good."

After discussing our plans, we went to get ready for the day. Kris immediately noticed the look on my face.

"What's wrong?"

"I've never skated before. My mom learned when she was growing up but hasn't since right before my parents met."

"She never taught you?"

"I always made excuses. Truth is I was terrified. Still am, actually."

"You'll be fine. I'll be with you every step of the way."

I smiled and kissed him.

"I love you."

"I love you, too."

An hour or so later, we were at the rink, skates all laced up and ready to go. What I hated is that I couldn't lace my own skates; that was embarrassing, but Kris just laughed it off.

"Ready?" he asked as we were about step foot on the ice.

"No." I said, shaking my head.

My mom was already on the ice skating like a pro, like she hadn't missed a day since around the time when my parents met. My heart was pounding like a hammer.

"Athena?" he asked, touching my shoulder.

"Yeah?" I gasped.

"I think you are ready."

I shook my head. He let out a laugh.

"Mon amour, vous pouvez le faire. Je sais que vous le pouvez. Vous pouvez faire quelque chose. Vous avez fait les choses plus difficiles que cela."

I smiled and nodded.

"Je'taime." he said.

"Je'taime aussi."

I then took that one big step onto the ice. The hard part was over, but I still had a long way to go.

"How ya feeling?"

"Ok." I said, taking a breath.

I took a couple more steps and began breathing much easier.

"Now..."

I slipped and almost fell a few times, but luckily I had big, strong Kris to catch me. I couldn't skate fast once I got the hang of it, but it didn't matter; I had learned to skate.

"Thank you."

"My pleasure." he said, tipping my head up and kissing me.

We met up with my mom who was at the other end of the rink.

"Hi, Mom."

"Hi, honey. How have the skating lessons gone?"

"Once I got a pep-talk, I stepped onto the ice, where I almost fell a few times, but this man over here was there. I've certainly got the hang of it. Can't wait till I can actually skate fast; this isn't very fun."

"It'll be much more fun sometime after you've given birth to Kalea. Trust me."

"I believe you, Mom."

After an hour of skating, we grabbed a bite to eat before heading home. The ice-skating took a lot out of me, so I needed to rest. I sat on the couch and propped my feet up on the table.

"That feels so much better." I sighed as I laid my head back.

"It does?" Kris asked.

"It does."

"Do you know that the Christmas Party is tonight?"

I groaned.

"I forgot. What time?"

"7."

"Ok. Not looking forward to wearing a dress like this."

"I'm looking forward to see you wearing a dress."

"Of course you are. You're my boyfriend. You're Kalea's father." I said, rolling my eyes.

My mother was laughing at the spectacle.

"Anyway... what are you wearing, Mom?"

"A dress I bought years ago. You might actually recognize it."

I nodded.

About three hours later, I was getting ready for the party. My mom was helping me getting ready before she did.

"My mom. Go ahead and get dressed. I'm fine."

"Are you sure?" she asked, standing in front of me.

"Yes. I'm sure. Now, please go get dressed." I said, laughing and shooing her away.

When I was done getting ready, I stood in the full length mirror in the bathroom and smiled.

"You are so beautiful." Kris said as he wrapped his arms around me and hands on my stomach.

"Thank you." I said, blushing.

"My pleasure." he said, kissing me.

"Let me take a look at you."

I turned around and stood back looking at him from head to toe.

"Damn. You look amazing. You have me speechless."

He blushed.

"Thank you."

"My pleasure."

Ten minutes later, I was out in the living room and finally saw my mom in her dress. The dress she said I might recognize. She wore it on her last date with my dad before he got sick; the tears welled up immediately.

"You like?"

I nodded.

"I love it. You look so beautiful right now." I said through tears.

"You do recognize it."

"Yeah."

"Oh, honey."

She walked over to me and hugged me tightly. The tears just continued to rain down. I didn't want to let go but knew I had to.

"I love you, Mom."

"I love you, too. He would've thought you were the most beautiful girl tonight."

"That's you, Mom. Not me."

"You're his little girl. I agree with him. You're glowing right now."

I blushed and smiled while I wiped the rest of my tears away. I looked up at Kris and he immediately hugged me.

"So, are we ready to go?" I asked after a few moments.

I got a simultaneous yes.

After we put on our coats and grabbed our purses, we were out of the door. This would be my first party party and I was a wee bit nervous. Kris drove to Marc and Vero's house and I gasped at how nice the house was.

Wow.

"Ready, ladies?"

We laughed and nodded before he had a woman on each arm. I couldn't hardly keep in my laughter. Vero answered the door.

"Hi, guys. Welcome." she welcomed.

"Thanks. I'd like to introduce you to Athena's mother, Marianne. Marianne, this is my teammate Marc-Andre's girlfriend and obviously, Athena's friend, Vero."

"Nice to meet you." she said shaking her hand.

"Nice to meet you too."

After we went inside, Vero pulled me aside and we talked.

"So, you're looking beautiful tonight."

"Thanks." I said smiling.

"How's baby Kalea?"

"Great, but she just keeps pressing on my bladder. That's the only thing."

She laughed.

"Only three months, right?"

"Yeah, about, then I can try and lose weight."

"How much weight have you gained?"

"25 pounds." I said, groaning.

"That's not bad."

"Yes. It is."

"It isn't. Kris doesn't think so, doesn't 'e?"

"Of course not. He's... well... Kris." I said with a laugh.

"He loves you like crazy. I've never seen him that happy."

I've never been this happy since before my dad got sick. Nine years is a long time; it's too long. The rest of the night, I had so much fun and so did Kris and especially, my mom. I don't know the last time she had that much fun, how much I had that much fun.

"How you feeling?" Kris asked.

"Feeling like I need to sleep."

"Let's get to bed then."

"Ok." I said, leaning into him.

"Night. Mrs. Halloway."

"Night Kris. Night Athena."

Once in bed, I snuggled into Kris and smiled.

"Today was fun." I said sleepily.

"It was. I hadn't that much fun in a while."

"Me either."

"Goodnight, baby."

"Goodnight, Kris."

"I love you."

"I love you, too."
