Chapter 4

I looked up at the clock on Tyler's nightstand. 11:19 AM. "Shit." I got out of bed slowly and quietly so as not to wake up Tyler who was still asleep.

I went into his kitchen and grabbed a pencil and paper before scrawling a note that said,

Tyler-

Thanks for letting me stay the night! I feel a lot better now, and I had a lot of fun!
Hang out tonight maybe?
Text me when you have the chance, I have my job until 4:30.

-Lexi

I put my hair into a quick ponytail and grabbed my coat before starting on my walk towards my house.

It was a bitter cold morning and many people were already out shopping, walking, jogging, and just, well.... going places and doing things. I put my head down and walked a little faster.

There were shouts from a newspaper stand as a customer and owner argued over something.
Probably the prices of the newspaper, I thought as I passed by.

As I passed by a store, a group of familiar looking guys stopped me.

Hunt said, "Hey Lex! What did Coach Quenneville have to say?"
"Oh, well...." I said.

I couldn't just say that I had been asked to play on the Blackhawks.... could I?
Well I couldn't lie to them either, and being my friends, they could keep secrets...
So I told them.

"He asked me to come to a Blackhawks practice tomorrow... He said I was one player chosen out of two to play on the Hawks... Do NOT tell anyone though!" I said with a dangerous stare at Hunt.

Hunt's eyes were wide and he just said,
"Who's the other player...?"
"Someone from the IceHogs..." I trailed off.

"Well that's strange... we aren't the affiliates of the Hawks, so I wonder why they'd chose someone from the Wolves..." he said, obviously puzzled.

"That's what I thought!" I exclaimed. "Congrats though!" Hunt said with a warm smile and he gave me a friendly hug.

"Thanks!" I replied.

None of the other guys had been paying attention at all as they kept talking, so we both said our good-byes before we went our own ways.

I walked another block before I got into my house. I headed straight to my bedroom, took a quick shower, and put on my uniform for my work at Whole Foods. I glanced at the digital clock on my nightstand I sighed. 12:16. "I'm going to be late," I muttered as I ran out of my room, barely snagging my keys off of the kitchen table before I ran out the front door and down to the street.

I quickly turned on the car and drove away, down the street before turning the corner, going down five blocks, and pulling into a parking lot next to Whole Foods.

I raced through the back entrance and clocked in, barely making it before the clock struck 12:30.

"Barely made it again?" I heard Amanda say and I turnd around to see her smirking. "I slept in..." I muttered.

She slapped me on the back and headed out into the store. I followed her and we reached the cash registers.
"Yes!" I said happily.
"We can work next to each other!!!! FINALLY!" Amanda said excitedly, and I nodded.

Mr. Kermer walked by and said, "Everyone get ready! I just opened the door! And Lexi, absolutely NOT! Move down a few registers!"

I groaned and walked down a few before settling in.

"It'll be a while before anyone comes to the registers," Amanda says as she walks down and leans on her elbows against the platform next to the register.

I take note of people slowly streaming into the store, and before we can even start talking, a guy comes up to the register and Amanda has to leave back to her station to take care of customers.

I check and bag every food item the guy puts on the belt, and he quickly signs the screen and pays before leaving with his bags.

The next two hours go by quickly with the same pattern: check, bag, pay.

When the last customer in my line pays and leaves, I check the clock. 2:37. "Hey. I was told to have you on cart duty and I can take your place here," I heard Kevin, a guy who works with me, say. "K thanks,' I said as I brushed past him.

Cart duty was my favorite job because you get to go outside. Working in a grocery store doesn't mean you get to go outside often, so cart duty was a relief from being inside, even if it meant you were still working.

I went out and got all the carts in one section in the parking lot and brouht them in. I made my way across the whole parking lot of carts everytime, until I got back to where I started and restarted the cycle over again.

I made it all the way across the parking lot three more times before the next shift came out and relieved us of our jobs.

When I got into the backroom, I found that Amanda's locker was already empty.

Strange, I thought. Amanda always said bye before leaving work, so she never had left without at least insulting me (in her friendly way, which I found funny).

I checked my texts and saw a message from Tyler that said,

Meet me at Starbucks.

I texted back an okay before I drove to the nearest Starbucks.
I ordered a hot choclate and took a seat as I waited for Tyler.

What could Tyler possibly want?

Anytime we met at Starbucks, it was an important meeting.

My thoughts were interrupted when Tyler sat down across from me, no coffe or drink in his hand, and a sober expression on his face.

"What's wrong?" I asked, concerned.

"I-I don't think our relationship is going to work."
