The Hockey Life

The Honeymoon Phase

PART EIGHTY-NINE: THE HONEYMOON PHASE
Patrick’s POV

I knew the hockey withdrawals were bound to kick in some time. With only a couple days left of our honeymoon, I started to feel them - the urge to go skating, the desire for the ice and cold temperatures, the slight loneliness from not being around my teammates. But, at the same time, I was so happy to be with Lena on such a breathtaking island, and we only had a couple days left, so we needed to embrace and enjoy them.
By the end of the week, we had done just about everything possible on the resort and we both had gotten enough of a tan to be able to call everyone at home pale. It was a really fun honeymoon, I had to say. And sure, the frigid cold of Chicago was a bit of a shock when we left the airport after our flight back home, but we would get used to it again.
“Welcome back, Peeks,” Sharpy greeted me when I entered the locker room for the first time in a week. It definitely felt like I was home again.
“So, how was the honeymoon?” Shawzy asked.
“It was awesome,” I replied as I began to change into my hockey gear for practice.
“What all did you guys do?” Saadfather wondered.
“Before he answers, what exactly do you mean by that, Saader? Please clarify,” Shaw laughed, but I just rolled my eyes.
“We swam with dolphins, surfed, got massages, and had a ton of good food,” I told them. “You don’t need to know the details!”
Being back on the ice felt amazing, and it made me feel at ease. We had a team lunch and there was a game at home the next day that we got pumped up for. Everything put me in a really good mood, so I was a very happy human when I finally got home.
“We should try to go ice skating tonight,” I suggested as I took off all my extra layers of clothing.
“It’s really cold out there, Pat. And we just got back, don’t you want to take it easy for a few days?”
“No,” I replied, hugging her from behind. “Do you wanna build a snowman?” I began to sing, and she giggled at my not-so-great voice.
“It’s Tazer degrees outside but it feels way colder with the wind. Let me adjust to this windy city weather before we start having snow days.”
“Did you really just say ‘Tazer degrees outside?’”
“Why do you want to be outside so badly, anyways?” she ignored my question.
“Because I missed the snow,” I admitted. “Ya know, if we went outside it would give us an excuse to have peppermint hot chocolate.”
“I don’t need an excuse to have peppermint hot chocolate,” she scoffed.
“You can’t just have hot chocolate for no reason!” I scolded her as she went into the kitchen to make some.
“Since when?”
“Since now!” I picked her up and threw her over my shoulder before she could get the mix out.
“Patrick! Put me down!” she shouted, punching me in the back. I didn’t listen until we had reached our bedroom, which was cluttered with our still unpacked suitcases. I laid her down on our bed and grimaced. She started to sit up, but I got on top of her and pinned her wrists down before she could escape.
“You’re not going anywhere,” I said as I attacked her neck.
“I’m tired, Pat,” she complained.
“Me too,” I confessed.
“Let’s take a nap,” Lena decided, playing with my hair.
“Like, a real nap, or…?” She punched me lightly in the arm for that, so I got off of her and laid on my side. I wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her close to me. She gripped the extra blanket on the end of the bed with her feet and pulled it until it was in reach. We draped it over ourselves and after a few minutes, we were sound asleep.
We woke up at around 6 pm, so we made dinner together, got our unpacking done, and then we ended up going right back to bed. The jet lag from our trip had gotten to us, so we might as well get caught up on sleep to fight it off. We both had busy lives, after all, and neither of us could be tired at work.

**********************************************

The next day, Lena and I arrived at the United Center early for the game. Really early - as in, earlier than normal. I had always heard about the honeymoon phase of relationships, and I quickly learned that it was a real thing.
We snuck into the locker room before anyone else would normally get there, smiling like idiots. It kind of felt like we were in high school, getting into whatever trouble we could find.
“Pat, what if someone comes in here?” Lena muttered in between kisses. We were sitting at my stall, her on my lap.
“I locked the door, we’ll hear them trying to get in,” I told her. “I thought you wanted to do this.”
“I do, I just never considered the things that could go wrong,” she promised, unzipping her trainer’s jacket to reveal a lacy red bra that I loved. “But there’s no point in backing out now, is there?” She pulled my hoodie and t shirt off of me before getting back to kissing me. My mind drifted to the things I had imagined happening between us in the locker room and we got lost in the moment for a few minutes, until we heard someone attempt to open the door, followed by the jingling of keys.
“Shit,” Lena whispered. My heart raced as I tossed her jacket to her.
“Here, go back to the training area. We’ll make it look like we just got here really early so you could do trainer stuff.” She paused for a minute to glare at me.
“Trainer stuff, Patrick? Really?” A key was inserted into the lock and then taken out after the door handle turned.
“Go!” I waved her on after pulling my shirt back over my head. I was expecting an equipment manager, the head trainer, or maybe even Coach Q to enter the room, but instead, I saw Melanie.
“Oh, hey Patrick,” she said, pulling earbuds out of her ears.
“Hi,” I responded, waving for no apparent reason. My heartbeat was still irregular.
“What, um…what are you doing here already?” she questioned me, suspicious.
“Oh, Lena wanted to get some extra work done and there was no point in us driving here separately, so I just came with,” I lied.
“And what exactly is Lena working on?” Oh god. I was not good at improvising.
“Well…as you know, playoffs are in a few months, so she’s just checking out injury reports. You know, recent ones, not so recent ones…to make sure we can stay on top of everything and keep an eye out for anything that might start hurting again. Instead of waiting until it’s closer to play offs, some guys might be better off taking some time off now, to prevent injury,” I rambled, all of it BS. I hoped Melanie would fall for it, but I wasn’t that lucky.
“You don’t have to keep making things up, Pat. I know that’s not why you guys are here, but I’m not even going to question the real reason. I just need to grab something real quick, and then I’ll be on my way,” she said. She did just that and locked the door on her way out.
“Well, that was quite the adventure,” Lena laughed, making her way back to where I was.
“Who says it’s over? You heard her, right?”
“If someone tries to come in again, we might not get so lucky,” she argued.
“But Lean, I have a problem now,” I told her, pressing myself against her.
“Fine, I’ll fix your problem, but that’s it!” she decided.

**************************************************

“Hey man, you’re earlier than usual,” Jonathan said when he arrived. He was always the first to get there. Well, except for today. “Come to think of it, why are you here so early? Aren’t you still a little worn out from Hawaii?”
“Not really, no. I caught up on my sleep. I’m ready to go,” I answered.
“Lena’s here?”
“Yeah.”
“So you both came early for…?”
“No particular reason.” Jonathan just looked at me quizzically for a moment before a smile formed on his face.
“They don’t call it the honeymoon phase for nothing, do they? You know your vacation is over, right?” he questioned me when he realized what Lena and I had arrived early for.
“Oh, shut up,” I replied, annoyed. Johnny laughed before his smile turned into a frown and he got a disgusted look on his face.
“Wait a minute…where?”
“Where what?”
“Where did you guys do it?” This was the perfect opportunity to mess with him, and I just couldn’t pass it up.
“Right by your stuff,” I grinned, pointing.
“Oh god, you did not!”
“You’re right, we didn’t. Even if we wanted to ruin your life, Melanie came in. It didn’t exactly go as planned.”
“That’s hilarious. I hope she isn’t scarred for life, though,” he said, worried.
“All she saw was me sitting by my stuff, clothed and all,” I explained.
“Well, your face can scar anyone for life, so I’ll pray for her,” he decided, and I made sure to punch his arm hard.
A few more of the guys messed with me when they got into the locker room, but it didn’t phase me. I was glad to get out on the ice again, and we ended up winning our game 4-1 against the Ducks. I even scored two goals. It was a good night, and the win put everyone in a good mood, especially Dylan. He had one of the four goals, but that wasn’t enough explanation for everything. I had seen him talking to one of the girls from Lena’s old hockey team at our wedding. They sat by each other, danced together, and everything. I had a sneaking suspicion that they were together now, and maybe that was why he was so happy. I hoped that was true, anyways. There wasn’t as much tension between us anymore, but I still couldn’t bring myself to get over what he had done. All I could do was hope that he was finally moving on.
