Flightless

There's no stopping this.

"You know there's no way I'm taking no for an answer," Jordan was still arguing the validity of his proposal half an hour later when Lucy and Max entered the apartment. "How could you break my heart like that? I've found the most perfect woman ever and you wont marry me? That's just unfair. How could you deprive the world of the beautiful babies we could make? You don't even have a valid reason!"

As they came into view Max was shaking his head, obviously used to his teammate's antics, while Lucy looked confused and a little worried about who she'd left her roommate in the care of. True, she'd only asked TK and Tanger to hang out, but apparently Jordan had already made plans to chill at their place two floors up anyway.

The scene they saw before them was similar to when the proposal had been delivered, the difference being that Jordan and I were no longer laying over Tanger, instead now sitting with Jordan's arm around my shoulders, closely resembling a headlock.

Tyler had soon gotten sick of the playful bickering, choosing instead to flip through channels until he found an old rerun of Baywatch. Tanger however was still paying close attention to us next to him, laughing and shaking his head each time I mouthed for help. Entertainment like this didn't come along every day, so why not make the most of it? Besides, the longer we argued, the more ammunition I gave him to use against Jordan, on the slim chance he'd need it.

"Oh thank god, finally some sane people!" I exclaimed when I saw the new additions to the room. "Honestly, are movie preferences and eye colour real grounds for marriage proposals? Or," I continued, not giving them a chance to answer, "Am I justified in saying no because I've only known this fool for about twenty hours and have serious doubts about his sanity?"

Jordan didn't give them a chance to speak either, "Hey, you forgot to mention that your legs fit perfectly, wrapped around my waist."

Seeing that Max was making the leap to a completely wrong idea of what had happened I cleared up the confusion and explained what they'd missed.

"Sorry Jordy, but I think Rayne has a fair point. Besides, I don't want you stealing her away from me already, I just got her!" Lucy settled herself down in the small gap between myself and Tanger, prying Jordan's arms away so she could hug me.

I'm not that much of a touchy-feely person, especially with people I just met, but somehow it already felt natural with these guys. I know it's completely cliché, but I felt like I fit into their little family dynamic.

I was more used to hanging out by myself, even in a house full of people. Of course I'd go and be sociable for a while, occasionally the whole night, but generally I was more than happy to keep my own company, listening to my favourite music and reading a book or talking to my friends from around the world online. After I dropped out in my last year of high school my so-called friends wanted nothing to do with me. Of course, they never came out and said so directly, but plans were always broken last minute - including my 19th birthday they'd all promised profusely to attend. That was the last straw for me, when I gave up on caring about people who couldn't extend the same courtesy. I had workmates, my rugby boys, and my sister to drag me out for nights on the town, but friends weren't worth the effort. Maybe these people could change my opinion on that though.

Jordan was pouting like a child who'd been told he wasn't allowed an ice cream before tea, arms folded as he hunched over in his seat. It was a sad sight, from someone who was so vibrant; I couldn't let him stay that way.

"Hey, how about we make a deal?" I ventured as I wrapped my arms around him, snuggling into his side. Seeing his eyes light up a little when he glanced at me, I continued, "If you score the series winning goal I'll marry you, and if you don't it will never be mentioned again. Deal?"

I offered my hand, waiting while he mulled over the suggestion. I could tell the others were looking at me like I'd grown a third head (yes, third, because two wasn't quite out there enough for this amount of attention) but I kept my gaze on Jordan.

As soon as his eyes lit up back to their usual energetic selves I knew he would say yes. What I didn't know was that he'd bypass the handshake in favour of straight up going for my lips, completely catching out not only myself, but everyone else in the room if the gasps of shock were anything to go by.

It was a short, respectful kiss, full of excitement at having gotten his way, at least for the next week or so. "I knew I loved you for a good reason, fiancée!"

"Come on loverboy," Max called, pulling himself up from watching Baywatch next to TK. "If we don't leave now we'll miss the plane to Philly."

With that said, goodbyes and good lucks were exchanged and then it was just the two of us girls left.

"Did I really just get myself engaged?"

Who saw that coming? Haha
