The Intern

Chapter Three

It’s the day of the interview. I'm sitting on the train, heading towards Boston and the Garden, where I might get a chance at my dream. Too nervous to really practice anything, I reach into my bag and pulls out my phone and headphones. Needing to relax, I pull up the playlist called ‘No Stress’. The sound of Pompeii by Bastille is blasted into my ears and I instantly feel calmer. I pull out My Story by Bobby Orr and sits back to wait out the rest of the hour and a half travel.
At the Garden, I meet Ron, who is waiting at the entrance for me. With him are two men who I do not recognize. One is an older man and the other, a bit younger, both way older than Ron and both were wearing nice suits.
“Cassandra?” he asks.
“Yes. But please, call me Cassie. Everyone does.”
“Alright. Cassie it is. This is Jeremy Jacobs and Peter Chiarelli. Jeremy owns the Bruins and Peter is the General Manager.”
“Nice to meet you,” I say, shaking both their hands.
“Let’s go back to my office,” Ron says, walking towards it. Jeremy, Peter, and I follow him through a few of the back hallways. When we reach it, he swipes a card and they all head in. I sit on one of the chairs opposite of his desk, while Jeremy and Peter sit on the couch. “So, tell me a bit about yourself.”
“Well, I’m 19. I’m a sophomore at University of Rhode Island. I’m majoring in Journalism and Photography. My dream job is to be a sports reporter/photographer for Sports Illustrated.”
“Very nice. Why a sports reporter?”
“Well, I haven’t always watched sports, but once I started, I was hooked. Especially on hockey and baseball. I’ve always wondered what goes on like behind the scenes and what goes on in athletes heads. I think becoming a reporter will help my curiosity. I’ll get paid to be curious.”
“Interesting. And why are you interested in being a photography intern for the Bruins,” Jeremy asks.
“I started watching the Bruins last season, since I have no other choice living in New England. But I love the history of the team, being part of the Original 6 teams.”
“You do know your stuff,” Peter says. “Unfortunately, Jeremy and I have a bunch of business to take care of before tonight’s game. But it was a pleasure meeting you,” he says as both of the men get up and leave.
“Likewise,” I say to them as he closes the door.
“So, I think you’re a perfect fit for the internship program,” Ron says. “They both seem to like you, you know your stuff, and you’re an eager student who’s ready to learn. So, would you like to be the newest intern?”
“Absolutely. Thank you sir!”
“Alright. How would you like to start tonight? I’ll even see if I can give you a sneak peek. I know the guys are at practice right now. Feel like shooting some practice pics?”
“Are you serious?!” I ask in disbelief.
“Of course. You’ll be getting to know them quite a bit over the remainder of the season. How about we head down there now?” Ron says, getting up. Cassie follows him back down more hallways. He points out different things along the way, mainly pictures and plaques. There are pictures of Bruins everywhere.

I can’t believe I got the internship! And I get to start today. I’m glad I brought my camera. Quickly, I pull out my phone and shoot off a quick text to Kyra.
Me: guess what?! I GOT IT!! I start today!
I shove my phone back into my pocket and quickly catch up to where Ron is waiting. We walk down a tunnel and I am face-to-glass with the Boston Bruins practicing on the ice. It’s awesome being able to see them practice. They’re all in their color coordinated practice jerseys: the forwards wearing gold, white, merlot, and green, and all defensemen and goalies wearing black. I pull out my phone again and check on Twitter to see who’s in what colors. From what I read, it’s Marchand-Bergeron-Seguin in gold, Lucic-Krejci-Horton in whie, Caron-Kelly-Peverley in gray, and Paille-Campbell-Thornton in merlot. All the defensemen look alike, but I can tell Chara apart because he’s the tallest. And the goalies are easy because of their masks and pads.
Snapping off a few shots, I look down at me camera to go through the last few that I took. There’s one that I really like. He’s a defenseman, tall, but they all are pretty tall. His hair sticks out of the back of his helmet in curls. I can’t tell exactly what he looks like. He’s not wearing a visor like a lot of the others do. He’s got a real intense look on his face, but a slight smile is hinting as he’s battling against one of the green forwards. I take a few more shots before Ron calls me over.
“Practice is just about over. How about we go meet the other interns than we can meet some of the team after their media availability.”
“Sounds good to me,” I say, packing up my camera and following him. We walk into the conference room where there are 5 other people, all about my age. Ron introduces me and a chorus of hellos greet me. I learn that their names are Chloe, Mike, Noah, Jenny, and Sam. They all work in the other departments. The intern I replaced, Rick, left because he said he needed to focus more on school. I’m just happy that I got the chance.

Adam’s POV
As we’re practicing, I spot a girl taking pictures of us. At first I think she’s just a fan, but she’s not in the stands like the rest of them, she’s in the media spot. I heard that we were getting a new intern.
In the locker room, everyone starts to change into their workout clothes, getting ready to do some media before we all leave. We’ve got a game today, so availability will be short and sought after. I shed my gear and head towards the showers.
After everyone’s showered and clothed, the media come towards us like wild bulls. They’re calm, but it’s a crazy sight. With the media satisfied for now, they leave and Coach addresses us.
“Big game tonight boys,” he says and everyone just grunts in agreement. He worked us pretty hard, since we lost last night. Since we’re playing back-to-back games, we all feel that this game is a must win. After he goes through the game plan for tonight, he stops. “If everyone could stay a few minutes longer, the head guys want you guys to meet the newest interns. I know you met them earlier, but they got a new one.”
The intern program head guy, Ron I think, heads in, along with all the interns. There’s an equal amount of boys and girls, 3 each. They all shuffle in nervously. I spot the girl I saw during practice. Up close, I can see that she has long dark chocolate hair that falls in soft curls and bright blue eyes. We all wave hello to them.
“Guys, I know you’ve met them before, but I’d like you to meet the newest intern, Cassie. She’s a Journalism and Photography student at URI,” Ron tells us. Cassie waves shyly. Only a few of us are left, most have either headed home or are working out a bit. Marchy is the first one to get up and shake their hands. He’s usually the first one to do anything when there’s new girls around, especially ones that are younger than him. Not surprisingly, Segs is right behind him. I swear, those two travel in a pack.
“Hey, I’m Brad Marchand,” he says, staring at the group of young students, mostly the females. Coach told us we couldn’t get involved with them. So I have no idea why those two are still trying. They can get in some serious trouble with the team if they try anything. At least they’re not being complete assholes with them. I’ve heard some stories about when they go out clubbing together with some of their friends. Let’s just say it’s not a pretty sight, especially when Coach finds out.
Ference and Pevs introduce themselves, than head out to leave. I’m the last one to greet them.
“Hey, I’m Adam,” I say walking up to them. I shake all their hands. They all seem nice, but Cassie is super shy. I don’t know if she’s nervous to be around us or what. They all file out, leaving me alone in my stall. I can hear Segs and Marchy talking about them. “Guys…leave them alone. They’re off-limits.”
But there’s something about that new intern.

Notes

It might seem a little rushed or slow in parts, but it's going to work out. Trust me
