The Intern

Chapter Seven

Adam’s POV:
The next morning, I wake up and glance at the alarm clock. 7:00 flashes in angry red numbers. We need to be at the Garden in 3 hours. Looking out the window, that snowstorm really packed a punch. There’s about 1 ½ feet of snow on the ground. I wonder if they’ll cancel the game. Last time it snowed this much, they cancelled. Grabbing a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt, I throw them on and head out towards the kitchen. Cassie is still sleeping on the couch, curled into herself. I find myself watching her and can’t help but smile. I pull out some pans and start on the breakfast I promised her. I’m not that great a cook, but I can make a kick ass omelet.
I start whipping the eggs and frying the bacon. Nothing gets a person up in the morning like the smell of freshly cooked bacon. Cassie starts to stir and sits up.
“Hey, good morning,” I say to her.
“Morning,” she says, half-asleep.
“Sleep well?”
“Great. Your couch is very comfortable.”
“That’s why I picked it,” I say.
“I know what you mean. Sometimes you’re so tired that you just pass out on the couch after games.”
“Exactly.”
“Mmmm…that smells great. What’re you cooking?”
“Omelet’s and bacon. What do you like in your omelets?”
“Peppers and cheese sounds good.”
“That’s what I like,” I say, turning back to take the bacon out of the pan. I finish frying them and start on the omelets. When everything’s done, I plate it, grab some ketchup and orange juice out of the fridge and set everything down on the table. I squirt ketchup onto my plate for the bacon and we dig in. As we’re eating, I get the first call. It’s Coach, telling me that the game has been cancelled due to inclement weather. I hang up and tell Cassie the news. Now we have the whole day to hang out. I definitely have an idea on where I want to take her, even if we have to walk there. Good thing we both wore boots last night.
“So, since we don’t have to go to the garden now, I have an idea on something we could do.”
“What is it?”
“A surprise. You’ll see when we get there.”
“Ah…come on. I hate surprises.”
“We’ll you’ll learn to like them. I’m full of surprises. Let’s get dressed. We’re heading out.” I head towards my room and Cassie towards the bathroom.
Cassie’s POV:
Adam is surprising me and I have no idea what to expect. I don’t have anything decent to wear and I probably smell funky. I head into the bathroom to change. I wear my skinny jeans from yesterday and keep the shirt that Adam loaned me on. It’s actually really comfortable. I look through my bag and see that I have some of my survival tools. After freshening up, I head back to where Adam is waiting. He smiles when I walk in. He’s wearing a pair of jeans and a blue t-shirt, with a jacket on over it.
“You kept my shirt on.”
“Yeah. I hope you don’t mind.”
“Not at all. You can keep it.”
“Really? Thanks.”
“No problem. So, you ready to go?”
“I guess, seeing as I have no idea where we’re going.” I pull on my gray pea coat and we head out of his building and down the street. It’s freezing out, so I’m huddled close to him for warmth. He’s super comfy, even if he’s really all muscle.
Adam’s POV:
Cassie is getting closer and closer to me. And I’m loving every second of it. After walking a couple blocks, we head into my favorite coffee shop. It’s a cozy little place with tons of charm and live music. Currently, there’s a duo, one singing and one playing guitar. They have the best hot chocolate and cookies here. Cassie looks mesmerized. She sits down while I order two cups of cocoa and a giant chocolate chip cookie to split. I bring it over to the table and sit down in the chair opposite her. She eyes the food and her eyes grow wide.
“Is that a chocolate chip cookie?”
“Yep. They have the best ones I’ve ever tasted here. Don’t tell my mom, but they’re better than hers.”
“Wow. Then they must be good.” She breaks a piece off and sticks it in her mouth. “Oh my god. That is DELICIOUS!”
“I could’ve told you that. Try the cocoa. It’s homemade.” We just sit there for a while, enjoying our food and just each other’s company. Finally after a good hour and a half, we get up to leave. Walking out the door, we are hit with a blast of cold, arctic air. Cassie moves closer towards me again and, again, I just let her. We walk around Boylston Street, just looking in the shops. At a little jewelry shop, Cassie spots a ring and necklace that she likes. The ring has a ruby in the center, than diamonds on either side. The necklace is a little hockey skate, with a yellow stone in the middle. We walk in so she can look at them more.
“I really love them both. But I have to pick one. Being a poor college student sucks.” She eventually decides to go with the ring, but when she’s not looking, I buy the necklace for her, planning to do something special with it. We wind up in a little park and sit down at a bench. She laces her fingers through mine, then catches herself.
“No, it’s okay. I like it. I don’t mind.”
“Are you sure?”
“Totally.”
