The Captains
Interning
I woke up to the sound of my alarm. It was a cold November day in Pittsburgh. I got up, made breakfast, showered, got dressed, and left to the Consol Energy Center. I had been chosen by one of my professors to be an intern for the Penguins medical staff. I had to do it to pass the class and graduate. I was graduating to be a physical therapist, so this internship was perfect. I loved hockey, the team, and what I was doing. I was only on my second week out of 12. I hadn't been able to work with any of the team yet, I was just observing the actual staff for now. They told me I could start on my third week though.
A week later, I was finally able to actually start doing things. During a morning skate, Sidney Crosby twisted his ankle. He came in and Shawn, my mentor, let me handle it. When I was coming back from getting all the things I needed, Crosby asked me something.
"How come I've never seen you before?" he asked, taking his skate off.
"I just started as an intern. Today's my first day being able to work hands-on." I answered, wrapping the tape tightly around his ankle.
"Ow ow ow!" he exclaimed, clenching the table he was sitting on.
"Oh sorry!" I said back, loosening the tape a little.
"Not that, you're fine, my other foot just cramped a little. My ankle feels fine." he said, smiling.
I smiled back and finished the made sure everything was how it was supposed to be. I helped him to his feet and then walk to the door. Before he walked out, he turned and said
"Thanks-?"
"Chelsea" I said, smiling.
"Chelsea." He said, smiling back. "Welcome to the team, Chelsea. See you later" He finished, then turned and walked back out to the arena.
August 2011
Sidney Crosby and I had been close for the last 2 and a half years. We never dated, but were more than friends, but not friends with benefits. It was weird. When my internship was over and I graduated, I was offered a job to a physical therapy job for a clinic in Pittsburgh. I had gotten really close with the team too. This past spring, Sidney gave me a promise ring. He told me that if we were single by the time we're 35, we'll be together. He's 24, I'm 22, so we still have a while.
I woke up next to Sidney in his apartment. This had been happening a little more often lately, but we never did anything that crossed lines. Sidney was already awake and was doing something on his phone. I got my laptop out of my bag and checked my email. There was one from the Blackhawks organization. It was a job offer on their medical staff. They also would fly me out and pay for my hotel and everything like that. I really wanted that job, but that would mean leaving Sidney here. I closed my computer and put it away.
"Sidney." I said
"Yeah?" he asked, putting his arms around me and pulling me into him. I put my face into his chest.
"I think I'm moving back to Chicago." I said. Tears pricked at my eyes.
"You- what? Think?" he said, turning to face me.
"The Blackhawks offered me a really great job. They want me to fly out and see everything."
"What about me and you?" he said, burying his face in my neck
A tear fell, "That's what this if for" I said, looking at my ring. Its two silver bands that intertwined making one one ring and it had crystals in the gaps. I had it on my right hand instead of my left though. Sidney sighed into my neck. We stayed there for a while, not wanting to leave each other. I had to see a few patients today, so I had to get up and get ready eventually. I hugged Sidney and left for work.
I took the job in Chicago. The organization was great, and so was the job. The Blackhawks were also my first favorite hockey team. Leaving Sidney was bittersweet. I didn't want to be without him, but us being apart would make seeing him better. He helped me move into my new apartment. Watching him leave killed me. My best friend was gone. What have I done?
