The Captains

Perfect Night

Jon drove us to a little bar and grill type restaurant downtown. It wasn't busy thankfully. Jon asked to hostess to seat us in the back or somewhere a little more private, just in case the press came in or something like that.
"Nice goal the other night" the hostess said, smiling and giving us our menus. I almost lost it right there. I had to bite my lip and cover my mouth with my hand to suppress my laughter.
"Thanks" Jon said politely, not wanting to embarrass her by telling her the season hadn't even started. She smiled and left. Once she was out of earshot, I couldn't contain myself anymore. I burst out laughing. Jon just smiled and shook his head at me at first, but then laughed with me. We settled down when the waiter came and took our drink orders.
"I'm still kind of surprised we've never seen each other before at our building." I said, sipping my water.
"Well, I haven't been over here all that often. I would stay over at my girlfriends a lot, well ex-girlfriend now. I broke up with her about 2 weeks ago." he said, crossing his arms and putting them on the table.
"Oh. I'm sorry to hear that." I said. "Why?, if you dont mind me asking."
"I found out she was cheating." he answered. I didnt say anything, I just put my hand on top of his. He looked at me and smiled.
"Doesn't matter. She was just a dumb puck slut," he said "like the hostess."
I smiled and we looked in her direction. She was putting menus in the kiosk and nearly tripped while doing so.
"Poor thing." I said, both of us laughing and shaking our heads. a little while later, our food came. After we finished eating, the waiter took our plates and gave us the bill. Both Jon and I reached for it at the same time. My hand was under his. He raised one of his eyebrows and looked at me, then picked my hand up and moved it. I gave him a defeated look and he smiled and put his credit card on top of it and set it aside. The waiter took it and returned the receipt and card.
"At least let me get the tip." I said after the waiter left.
"Its already added in" Jon said, smiling and getting up from the table.
"You're killin' me." I said "I owe you."
"Whatever you say." he said, leading us out to his car and opening the door for me. I rolled my eyes and got in. He got into the drivers seat and started the car. We drove back to our building and parked. We went to elevator and got in. Jon pressed 35, the top floor.
"We're on 30." i said
"I know." Jon said back smiling at me. I gave him a questioning look.
"Just wait." he said as the elevator stopped. It opened and we got out. He led me down the hall and through a door. Behind the door were stairs. We went up those and then came to another door.
"Here, take this. You'll need it." he said, taking off his hoodie and helping me put it on. He was wearing a short sleeve shirt and it looked like his arms were about to burst through the sleeves. I could also his abs shift under his shirt. I tried not stare. His hoodie was also huge on me. It went passed my shorts so it looked like I wasn't any. I zipped it up and then he told me to close my eyes. He took my hand and then opened the door and led us out. As soon as I stepped out, I knew we were outside. The wind was blowing my hair and it made me really cold. He led me out a little further, then stopped.
"Okay, open." Jon said. I opened my eyes and was surprised. We were on the rooftop of the building. It had a grill and table under a covered corner and a few lawn chairs. There was also a porch swing on the side of the building.
"This place is amazing! I didn't even know we could come up here!" I said, facing Jon.
"Kaner and I worked some things out with the owner," Jon responded.
"He lives here too?" i asked
"Yeah, the apartment across from mine." he said
"Oh. I guess I just never go out. I've met everyone on the floor except you two," I said. Jon laughed. I smiled back and then we went over to the porch swing. We sat down next to each other and he put his arm along the back of the bench thing. We started talking and didn't stop for about a half hour. We talked about our past, family, childhood, school, everything. He also told me about his ex-girlfriend and how she treated him. When we finally ran out of things to say, I noticed we were holding hands. I looked down at them, and saw my promise ring. I had moved it from my right hand to my left when Sidney left back to Pittsburgh. Jon looked down too, and he did notice the ring.
"What's that?" he asked running his thumb over it. I didn't bring up Crosby to Jon when we were talking. I wasn't going to lie to him though.
"It-Its a promise ring." I said, looking up at him. He looked back at me.
"this guy named Sidney. My friend from Pittsburgh." I said, hoping he would leave it at that.
"Sidney- who?" he asked
"Crosby." I answered quietly, putting my head down and looking at the ring.
"Oh. Crosby. I guess we shouldn't hold hands then." he said, looking a little disappointed.
"No, no, its not like that. Crosby and I were never together, we were more than friends though, but not like dating. It sounds weird, I know, but its a promise that if both of us are single by the time we're 35, we'll be together." I said.
"Oh, so you're single?" he said.
"Yep. Single and ready to mingle." I said, smiling and chuckling. Jon laughed too.
"Same here." he said, half jokingly. I looked up at him, and he looked back, our faces even closer than before. He leaned in further and I did the same. Before I knew it, we were kissing. His hand came up to the side of my face and I put my arms around his neck. Then, I pulled back.
"Whats wrong?" he asked me, lifting my chin with his thumb and forefinger.
"I don't want to be your rebound girl." I said, looking into his eyes
"And I don't want you to be one. Fair enough." he said smiling.
"Friends, for now at least?" I said
"Sounds good." he said, standing up and reaching out for my hand. I took and we walked back inside and back down to our floor. When we got to mine, we stopped and faced each other.
"You want to grab some breakfast before we go to the UC tomorrow?" jon asked
"Sure," I said smiling.
"Alright. Ill be here at 9, Dagger." he said
"Chelsea Dagger? Good one Captain." I said, laughing.
"See you tomorrow" he said smiling and turning away.
I turned and went back into my apartment. I turned on music and danced around while getting ready for bed. This night was perfect. If only I could tell Sidney about it...

@Sidster87
I am so thankful you pointed this out. There's a chapter here that isn't showing up when I click on it, even though I uploaded it. Something happened in that chapter where Chelsea ends up in the hospital. Ill rewrite it and get everything worked out. Once again, thanks so much for saying something.

I'm a little confused. Reading the last chapter Jon was saying when she was in the hospital. I don't remember her going to the hospital. I read all the chapter twice. Am I missing something? I love the story, but I am confused.
