Chapter Thirty Eight

Everyone was in the kitchen staring at the TV monitor watching as Allie was talking to the FBI agents by herself. After what seemed like forever, Allie shook both of the men’s hands and then walked them out.

“It looks clear,” Tyler said and then we walked out to see what was going on.

“Allie?” I said as I walked over towards her and she was staring at the ground while leaning against the counter, “What happened?”

She looked up towards me and then rubbed her face, “When I was at the grocery store the other day, I guess something happened and I was caught on the camera and they wanted to ask me a few questions.”

“Nothing serious?” Tyler asked and Allie shook her head.

“No, they didn’t really go into details, but that’s what it was about,” she said and I looked at her.

I knew that look that she was giving, I knew that look so well because it’s the same look that I had given to so many people, ‘…She’s lying…’ I didn’t say anything though; I didn’t want to call her out. I would just wait until it was the two of us.

“Oh, you gave us a scare there, Allie,” Mildred said and Allie nodded her head and then looked at the ground.

“What’s wrong?” Tyler asked and I looked to see that Allie was still looking at the ground, looking like she was in deep thought, “Allie!”

“Allie!” I said and then tapped her arm.

“Huh? What?” she said and then looked up and I pointed towards Tyler.

“What’s wrong?” he asked and I looked back towards her, reading her face.

“Oh, I’m just trying to remember that day, to see if I could remember something I forgot to tell them,” she said and I turned my head.

‘…Another lie…’ I thought as I headed back towards the kitchen and then saw Sidney following me.

“What’s wrong?” he asked as he wrapped his arms around my waist.

I made sure that we were in the kitchen and that we were alone. I turned back towards Sidney and sighed, “She’s lying.”

“Who? Allie?” he asked and I nodded my head, “How do you know?”

“Because I know that face,” I said and then looked towards the ground.

“Hey,” he said and then lifted my face up with his fingers, “What’s going on in there?” he asked while pointing towards my head.

I sighed and then took his hand and I kissed it, “When Josh and I were on the run, I would have to lie a lot. I lied to people to protect them from Kyle, because if I got too close to them, Kyle would hurt them,” I said and then felt my eyes water. Sidney hopped me up onto the counter and placed his hands on my thighs and looked up towards me, listening to every word, “That look was the same look I would give to those people.”

“How do you know though?”

“I just know, please, you have to believe me,” I said and he nodded his head.

“Of course I will,” he said and then pressed his lips against mine.

“She’s hiding something from us,” I said and then saw that some of the people were walking towards the door.

I quickly pressed my lips against Sidney and placed his hands on my waist and we heard the door open.

“Oh come on guys! We’re trying to bake here!” I heard Allie said and I smirked and pulled away seeing Sidney smiling, “Get a room if you’re gunna do that!”

I laughed and then hopped off of the counter and felt Sidney stand behind me and wrap his arms around my waist and whisper, “Nice save,” into my ear.

The rest of the night was spent finishing up in the kitchen and then enjoying a nice dinner with Sidney and Josh.

-Sidney-

I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I was alone. I looked around the room and saw that it was about one in the morning and Julie wasn’t in bed. I sighed and then got out of bed and walked out of the room to see that the apartment door was opened. I looked around the apartment and walked over towards Josh’s room and opened the door to see that he was asleep with Sasha lying next to him; I smirked and then closed the door and looked at the bathroom door to see that the light was off.

‘…Where is she?...’ I thought as I sighed and then walked out of the apartment and down the stairs to see if she was downstairs.

I walked around the shop and didn’t see her, so I decided that I was going to check the kitchen, as I walked towards the door, I saw that there was a glowing light, as if a TV was on. I walked towards the door and opened it to see that Julie was sitting in the office looking at the TV.

“What are you doing?” I asked sleep still sounding my throat.

“I’m watching the security tap,” she said and I walked over towards her and yawned.

“Do you know what time it is?” I asked and she looked up at me and then over towards the clock in front of her, “After one.”

“Yes, you need sleep, I need sleep, it’s after one in the morning, we all need sleep,” I said and then shut the monitor off, only to see her turn it back on.

“If there’s any way that I can help Allie, then I’m going to help her,” Julie said sternly and I sighed.

“Can’t we do this in the morning?”

“It is the morning,” she said and I groaned.

“I mean when the sun is up,” I whined and she shook her head, “Allie risked her life to help me, I’m willing to do the same.”

“Julie, we don’t even know-“

“You said you believed me, Sidney. I have a bad feeling about this,” she said and I sighed and looked at her, “I just need you to trust me.”

“I do trust you,” I said and she nodded her head and I groaned and then rubbed my face, “What do you want me to do?”

“How good are you at reading lips?” she asked and I looked at her strangely and then walked out into the kitchen to grab a stool and then walked back in.

“Why?”

“I’m trying to figure out what they’re saying,” Julie said and I looked down to see that she had a pen and paper in front of her, “See, there’s two cameras in the store, and in the first one, I can see the two agents mouths moving, and in the second one, it faces Allie so I can read her mouth,” she and I looked at the screen, “If I can figure out what they’re saying and then put it all together, then I’ll know what they were really talking about.”

“What the hell are you? A spy?” I asked and she looked at me, “I’m never watching Mission Impossible with you again.”

She smiled and then shook her head, “Come on, I’m being serious!”

“All right, all right, but I’m so much better looking than Tom Cruise,” I said and she laughed and patted my knee.

“Of course you are,” she said and I looked at her.

“That didn’t sound too sure,” I said and Julie smiled and shook her head.

-Julie-

I was so tired and the only thing I got out of five hours of work and six pots of coffee was a bunch of mess up sentences and a really bad bladder. I couldn’t figure out what I had, it was like they were talking in code. One minute they’re talking about marshmallows and then the next they’re talking about shooting up the lollipop stack. I thought that maybe the lake of sleep was messing with my head, but clearly something was going on here, if Sidney was seeing the same thing.

“I give up for today,” I said and then looked to see that Sidney was leaning against the wall asleep. I smiled and then shook him awake and turned everything off, “It’s six in the morning, we need to go upstairs,” I said and he nodded his head.

Everyone usually woke up in about a half hour, and we needed to make it look like we were never here. I cleaned up everything and then made the office look like Sidney and I were never there. I headed up the stairs, dragging Sidney behind me and then headed back into my apartment. As I closed the door, I heard Allie’s door open from upstairs. I sat Sidney down on the couch and then looked through my peep hole to see that Allie was sneaking down the stairs looking very suspicious.

‘…What’s she up to?...’ I thought and then sneakily opened my door and followed after her down the stairs.
