Don't Let Go

Psychic

We arrived back home and I was hoping that tonight would be the night that I could sleep. Well actually that’s not how it happened. Kate was already asleep but when we were taking her out of the car she woke up. I threw my head back in disappointment, “Ugh! Kate, why can’t you ever stay asleep?” I told the screaming child.

You see, Kate is a light sleeper which means if you move her, she’ll wake up which gets to be a pain in my ass sometimes. Pat let out a soft giggle, “Bridget, don’t worry I’ll put her asleep tonight.” I smiled from ear to ear, thank god, finally a full night of sleep. “Thank you so much Pat!” I said with my eyes half way closed already. I slowly slid my way over to the nice warm bed and my head hit the pillow and the rest was history.

I woke up the next morning with Pat’s arm snaked around my waist, which brought an instant smile to my face. I decided to get up to treat Pat with some pancakes of the chocolate chip variety and bacon. I finally got out of bed and thought I was home free until, “Good morning beautiful, did you enjoy your full night of sleep?” He said with a yawn.

I nodded my head, “Yes, and I thank you so, so much for it.” I crawled back on to the bed and kissed his forehead, “So are you in the mood for chocolate chip pancakes?” I asked him. He responded with a smile as his eyes started to close again. “K babe, you just go back to sleep I’ll wake you up when they’re ready.” His eyes finally closed all the way and I went and made breakfast.

I grabbed my IPod and headphones and started rocking out and dancing around the kitchen. It’s kinda weird but that’s how I have to make breakfast. I was in the middle of making the pancake mix when someone came up from behind and hugged me around my waist.

I jumped just because I wasn’t ready for it, and flour flew everywhere. It was like a snow storm in my kitchen! “Look what you did!” I said turning around and flicking more of the mix into his face. He kept a straight face compared to me, who was indeed laughing her ass off. “Oh, you’re gonna get it now!” He shook his head dead serious, and I knew it.

I bit my bottom lip and starting running away, out of the kitchen. He tickled my sides which were always my weakness, I was cornered, he was on one side of the counter and I was on the other. He breathed heavy as I did, looking at me, and then at the bowl of pancakes and back up at me. I shook my head, “You wouldn’t!” He smirked and reached down and scooped up some pancake mix, and he flicked it back in my face. “Thanks, thanks Pat.” I nodded my head, “I love you too.” He smiled just because he knew he won this battle. I kissed him and went and got Kate who wanted to be fed.

Once Pat cleaned everything up, he joined Kate and me on the couch. It was silent except for the soft music in the background. Until I broke the silence as I gazed down at the ring that was glistening from the sunlight though the window.

“Ya know we still need to plan that wedding of ours.” I said starting the conversation.

“Oh, I didn’t tell you?” I scrunched my eyebrows together confused, “Tell me what?”

“My mom and I planned most of it.” He said sheepishly. I stared at him with my eyes wide open; until he smirked I knew he was kidding. “Bridge you are so gullible!” I rolled my eyes at him. I burped Kate which made me giggle every single time.

“Here, let me take Kate and put her in her crib and we can talk about the wedding.” I nodded in agreement and he took her away and it took only a mere 10 minutes to put her to bed compared to my half an hour. Pat always had the magic touch when it came to Kate.

He came back and sat down on the couch next to me. That didn’t last long, he ended up trying to get comfortable by laying down with his head on the pillow that was in my lap. “So? Where should we start?” He said looking up at me.

“Um, well how about we start with location?” I simply answered.

He paused for a sec, and then his eyes went wide, “I’ve got it!” He shouted standing up, “How about we have it at the United Center, right on center ice!”

I pondered that thought for a moment, “That’s actually a good idea.” I started, “Yeah, and my bridesmaids and groomsmen could come from separate benches and they would meet each other and walk out onto the—wait a minute.”

“What’s the problem?” he said.

“Well how are we gonna get out to the ice, I mean I’m not wearing hockey skates on my wedding day.”

“Well, we could roll out the Blackhawks rug that they have for the soldiers and Jim Corneilson to stand on.”

“That could work. Patrick what’s up with you today! You are full of ideas!”

“I don’t know…maybe it’s the pancake mix.” He said with a laugh.

“Alright now we’ve got the location, what about the date?”

“Yeah, um all my ideas are gone…What about you?”
“Um, well, I was kinda thinking about this for awhile now.” I shyly smiled, “How about October 20th?”

“Bridge, does that have to do with your parents’ anniversary?” I nodded, “Well then it’s settled, October 20th at the United Center, center ice.”

“Great and I already know what the bridesmaid dresses and groomsmen are going to wear.” I squealed.

“What does it look like?” Patrick asked curious as always.

“Well, the bridesmaid dresses are going to be a basic black halter dress and with a red ribbon around their waists. Then the guys are going to wear black suits with red ties. What do you think? Or is it too much red and black.” I said hesitantly.

“No, no it’s perfect. And I think that it will go well with the rest of the theme we’ve got going.” He smiled

“Ok cool, and I want your sisters to be my bridesmaids.”

“I think that can be arranged,” He said grabbing his phone. He dialed the phone number knowing everyone would be home, and pressed the button to put it on speaker.

“Hey Jackie, its Pat and Bridget,” He started.

“Oh my gosh! Hey guys! What’s up?” She said as excited as a 16 year old girl would be.

We both smiled, “K Jack, go get your sisters I have something to ask you.” I said in partial suspense.

Then in the background we heard, “Errrriiiiicccccaaaaaaa!!!!! Jeeesssss!!!! Get your butts down here! Pat and Bridget are on the phone!!!!”

“You know you could have just put the phone down and physically gone and got them.” Pat said in a calm voice.

“Yeah but that wouldn’t have been as much fun!” She stated.

“Alright guys were here what’s up?” Erica said, taking control as the older sister.

“Okay, now as you know we’re getting married and—,”

“OF COURSE WE’LL BE YOUR BRIDESMAIDS!!” Jackie screamed cutting me off in mid sentence.

“Jacqueline!” Jess and Erica said simultaneously.

Pat and I burst out laughing, “Girls it’s fine, that’s what we called to ask you girls any way.”

The next thing we heard was 3 screaming girls. “Alright! Alright! Calm down, now Erica will you be my moh? Try to contain yourself this time.”

There was silence but I knew she was desperately trying to stay calm even though I bet a billion dollars that her face was turning beat red from all the excitement.

“Your moh?” Pat said confused.

“Yes silly! Her MOH!” Jess screamed at her brother.

“Ummmm, no comprendo senorita,” He said breaking out the only Spanish he knew.

“Ugh! You are sooo stupid sometimes you know that Pat?” Erica screamed trying to make her brother understand.

I shook my head and rolled my eyes, “I asked her to be my maid of honor. Yah know, MOH?” I said calmly.

“OHHHHH, I get it now!” He said finally.

The girls started cracking up at how stupid his brother was being. “Now girls,” I paused, “your brother is a guy, which means he doesn’t focus on what goes on during weddings, he just shows up and says ‘I do’, and during this he will probably be focusing on the honeymoon.” I said giving Pat a look.

“Ohhhh Burn!” Erica burst in.

“I would do no such thing!” He said defending himself.

It went silent and I bet that the girls were giving him the same look on the other side of the line as I was. “Fine, maybe I will but still I love you and that’s all that matters.”

“Awwww aren’t you sweet!” I said giving him a peck on the lips.

“Okay, now it’s set for October 20th. I’ll be in touch with you girls later for dresses and such.”

“Alright cool! I love you guys!” Erica said.

“Love you too girls!” Pat and I screamed over the phone, “Bye!”

I hung up the phone and grabbed a book that I hid under our bed that Pat didn’t know about since he didn’t clean the apartment. I brought the book back and he didn’t understand, as usual, “What’s that?” He said right on cue.

“It’s my parents wedding album.” I said flipping to the first page, it was a big picture of the entire wedding party. “Who’s that?” He said pointing to the little baby in the grooms arms. I giggled, “That’s me, and my parents actually had me before they got married, ironic right?”

“Yeah, completely.” He took a deep breath as I flipped to the next page. It was a picture of my dad with his arms around my mom holding me. They both looked at me as I played with the baby blue ribbon that was around my white dress. Tears started to fall, as I lay my head on Pat’s shoulder. “I miss them so much.” I said holding back a sob.

“Hey Bridge, no crying this is a happy time.” Pat stated trying to cheer me up. “I know,” I sniffled, “But it’s just it was always my dream for my Daddy to walk me down the aisle to the man I love waiting at the other end.”

“Bridget, I know you wanted that but we have to work with what we’ve got.”

Just then there was a knock on the door. “I’ve got it.” Pat said getting up and going to the door. I wiped my eyes just so our visitor didn’t know that I was crying.

“Hey man, what do we owe this visit?” Pat said giving whoever it was a hug. Then Jon walked in and stood in the doorway, “Alright, so I’ve been thinking about this for awhile now since I found out about your engagement.” He cleared his throat, and I looked over the back of the couch, “Do you mind if we sit down?” He said, “No, no problem.” Pat said ushering Jon over to the couch, sitting in the loveseat across from Pat and me.

“Alright, so here goes,” Jon said starting off again, “So, um I was wondering if I could have the pleasure of walking you down the aisle.”

I smiled as another tear slipped down my cheeks, “Yes, that would be amazing.” I said jumping up and hugging him.

“Goddamn it” Pat said under his breath, “Babe what’s wrong?” I asked separating from Jon.

“Oh, nothing, it was just that I was going to ask Jon to be my best man!” He said crossing his arms.

“Can’t I do both?” Jon added.

“Eh that could work!” Pat said going over and giving him a hug just as I had, except less girly and such.

“Man, could you have showed up at a more perfect time? I mean we were just talking about who would walk her down the aisle.”

“I don’t know I just had a feeling that I had to do it now.” He said shrugging his shoulders.

“Are you sure you’re not psychic?” I said giving him another hug.
