One Shots

Amnesia

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Keirstyn cried as she shoved Sidney.
“Don’t do this here.” He grabbed her arm and dragged her through the hospital corridors, Keirstyn trailed behind him following him out the door and into the cold Pittsburgh streets.
“I wanted to call you but I didn’t think you’d care.” Sid explained, he let go of her arm as she shoved him again.
“You didn’t think I would care!” She yelled, “You didn’t think I would care that the guy I grew up with, the guy I’ve been in love with since I was seven years old, the guy I practically spent my whole life with is in a coma! You seriously didn’t think I would care?”
“Yeah the same guy you left!” Sid spat back.
“You don’t get to do that to me Sid, do you think it was easy for me to leave Beau? It wasn’t, but I couldn’t keep throwing my life away to follow him around everywhere. I truly loved Beau, I still do, and I regret leaving him every single day.” She cried.
“So why didn’t you come back?” He asked, “He would have taken you back and you know it. He loved you more than he loved any person in the whole world, and you want to know the first thing he said when he woke up from the coma?”
“What did he say?” She wiped away the tears from her eyes.
“Where’s Keirstyn?” He repeated Beau first words, “He wanted to know where you were, do you want to know why?” He asked.
“Why?” Keirstyn barely managed to say, there was a lump in her throat and she couldn’t speak through the tears.
“He has amnesia Keirstyn, he doesn’t remember what happened. He doesn’t remember that you left him.” Sidney explained.
It was like she could actually feel her heart break; she held her chest as it ached. He didn’t remember her leaving, he didn’t remember one of the worst days of her life.

-She sat at the edge of their bed tapping her foot nervously; she had thought about this over and over again, she had to do it. It felt like she had been waiting hours for him to get back from practice, her heart raced as she heard the door open and close. It didn’t take him long to walk into their bedroom.
“Why is your suitcase by the door? Are you going to visit your family again?” He asked as he quickly pecked her lips, she shook her head no and he looked at her confused.
She felt like throwing up, she knew this wasn’t going to be easy, how do you tell the person you’re in love with that you’re leaving them? There was no easy way out of this, and it pained her knowing she had to do it.
She took a deep breath before explaining, “I’m leaving Beau, I’m going home.”
“This is your home.” Beau responded, she shook her head, he didn’t understand what she was trying to say.
“No, I’m going back to Canada.” She explained more thoroughly. She avoided looking him in the eyes, she knew she’d cave if she did, she had been preparing herself for this moment for weeks but every time she tried to tell him she chickened out.
“Oh, when are you coming back?” He asked, she reminded silent, she finally had the courage to look him in the eye and the moment she did he realized what was going on, “Are you ever coming back?” He asked.
The tears began to fall as she shook her head not being able to let out a simple no, he kneeled down on the floor in front of her grabbing his face with his hands.
“Don’t leave me.” He pleaded. She was now sobbing, he wiped away her tears as his own fell, “I love you Keirstyn, I’m in love with you.”
She got up from the bed and moved away from him, she couldn’t let him stop her, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror, her makeup was running down her face and she looked like a complete mess.
“Why? Why are you doing this?” He asked, “Did I do something? Is there someone else? Do you love someone else?” The thought of her loving someone who wasn’t him completely tore him apart.
“Of course not, I love you Beau, I always have and I always will. I just can’t do it anymore, I gave up everything for you, I gave up my dream to follow you to Pittsburgh. It’s time I started thinking about myself, I need to do what’s best for me.” She explained.
She walked over to him kissing his lips one last time, “I’ve made up my mind. Goodbye Beau.”
“Is there anything I can do or say to make you stay?” He cried, she shook her head before turning her back to him and leaving him. -

She remembered sitting in the airport that night and watching the game on the tv, Beau had played horribly and it was all her fault.
“How much does he remember?” She asked.
“He’s having trouble remembering the past few months,” Sid explained, “It’s a shame he still remembers you.” Sid spat.
“Excuse me?” She was shocked by his words.
“You completely broke him Keirstyn, he spent months trying to move on from you, the way you moved on from him. I’ve never seen him so upset until the day he found out you had a new boyfriend, everything you said to him about he’s the only person you’d ever love was bullshit.” Sidney hissed.
“I shouldn’t have to explain myself to you,” Keirstyn spat, “My relationship with Luke didn’t even last long because all I could think about was Beau, he was all I ever thought about. I wish I was the one with amnesia because I can’t live with myself knowing I hurt him so much.” Keirstyn cried.
Sidney pulled her in for a hug as she cried into his chest; he didn’t realize how horrible she felt over the situation. He had spent months comforting Beau and now he was comforting her, it took weeks for Beau to finally open up to someone about what happened, and when he did it was to Sidney.
Sid remembered hating Keirstyn for what she did, he thought she was selfish for leaving Beau, he hated seeing one of the happiest guys on the team so heartbroken, and as the captain of the team he needed Beau to play his best, which he was not doing.
“I never wanted to hurt him.” Keirstyn sobbed, he rubbed her back trying to calm her down. She pulled away from the hug wiping the tears off her face.
“Do you want to see him?” Sid asked, Keirstyn nodded her head and faked a small smile; he wrapped his arm around her and guided her back into the hospital.
She took a deep breath as they reached his room, Sidney told her to wait while he went inside to let him know she was there. He walked out and gave her a reassuring smile before letting her go inside; she walked in and closed the door behind her.
Her eyes locked with his, she stood by the door too scared to even move towards him, he smiled at her letting her know it was okay. She took a few steps towards him and sat in the small chair by his hospital bed.
“When I woke up a few days ago and asked for you everyone looked so sad and no one would tell me why.” He spoke breaking the tension.
“Beau I-“
“No, let me finish,” He cut her off, “They said you weren’t coming, and I remember being so confused because you were my girlfriend why wouldn’t you come. They said I had amnesia which explained a lot. I started thinking about you and I realized there were so many times you weren’t there, and every time I mentioned you everyone got quiet, I realized I was missing out on something.”
He paused looking away from her, “I had a horrible dream one night, I came home from practice and your things were all packed and I thought you were going to visit your family. You told me you were leaving me because your dreams mattered more to you than I did even though I would have gave up everything for you.”
“That’s not true,” Keirstyn interrupted, “Nothing means more to me than you do.”
He ignored her comment, “I told Sid about my dream, and it didn’t take me long to realize by the look on his face that it wasn’t a dream. I was starting to remember things I didn’t want to remember. I used to want to forget all of our memories, I wanted to forget all the times I went to the places we used to hang out and get drunk by myself, I wanted to forget the way your lips felt against my own, or the way your hand fit perfectly in mine, or the way it felt to fall asleep next to you.”
“I wanted to forget everything about you Keirstyn because it hurt; it hurt to know you were happy without me. How could you be fine?” He cried.
“I wasn’t fine at all Beau. I missed you every single day and you have no idea how hard it was for me not to pack up my things and beg you to take me back. I tried to move on without you but I couldn’t, I wasn’t the same without you. I hate myself for leaving you because it was the biggest mistake of my life and I wish I could go back and change it, I’d give anything to go back and never leave you. You were all I ever wanted.” She looked down at her lap as she sobbed; she always hated crying in front of him.
“Keirstyn,” She looked up as he called her name, “Come here.” He moved over making space for her on his bed.
She got up from her seat and crawled onto the bed beside him, she laid her head against his chest as she wrapped her arm around his torso, “I’m so sorry.” She cried.
He slipped his hand under her shirt rubbing his hand against her bare back; he remembered how much it calmed her down when she was crying. He held her closer than he ever did before not wanting to ever let her go.
“Will you take me back?” She asked shyly.
“I thought you’d never ask.” He leaned down and kissed her lips, “I’d be stupid to let such an amazing girl walk out of my life again.”
“You still love me,” She asked, “Even after everything that happened?”
“Are you kidding? I love everything about you; I knew I loved you after you tried to drown me at the beach when we were kids.” He laughed.
“I was seven and you were nine. You wouldn’t stop pulling my ponytail! I had to teach you a lesson.” Keirstyn joked; she hugged him tightly missing all the times she used to do this.
“Our dads used to joke about the two of us growing up and falling in love and you always said it was gross because boys had cooties.” He teased playfully.
“Do you remember the tree house in your backyard?” Keirstyn asked, he nodded his head, “Remember the time you pushed me out of it and I sprained my ankle. Your mom was so mad.” Keirstyn laughed.
“I got in so much trouble and you were always so scared to climb back up the tree after that. You made me hold your hand and help you up.”
“I had my first kiss in that tree house.” Keirstyn smiled remembering it.
“With me.” He smirked.
“With you.” She smiled wider, “I remember your first big hockey game, I lost my voice that night after cheering for you.”
“I remember the other time you lost your voice because of me.” He teased; she shoved him playfully and rolled his eyes.
“I remember when you moved to Canada, and I only saw you in the summer when you came to the beach house. I was always so excited to go to the beach house just to see you.”
“You tackled me to the floor the first summer up there; I thought I had a concussion.” They laughed together.
“I love you Keirstyn.”
“I love you too Beau.” She looked up at the blue eyes she missed dearly.
