The Moonstone Starlet

Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Blue Frog had two locations. One on Hubbard, and a lesser known location on LaSalle. The location on LaSalle was easy to miss. The corner was a parking lot, but if you looked past the cars you would see the entrance to the tiny bar and a few chairs with umbrellas. Inside was dark and cramped, with cheap tables and tacky wood paneled walls. It was a dive in the most unexpected of places. Locals loved it for it’s drink specials and karaoke. When the Blackhawks showed up on a random Wednesday night in September they took up much of the room. Insisting on everything being filmed, Elia had instructed one of her interns to come with a small discreet camera.

Karaoke didn’t start until 10:00pm so they grabbed the “Trivial Pursuit” game that was there and turned it into a drinking game. One person would ask a question from the card, and whoever didn’t get the question would have to drink. They would each take turns reading from the cards. It turned out to be a really bad idea, with $3.50 bottles and a lot of guys that were bad at trivia. After an hour everyone was starting to get a little drunk except Patrick Sharp and Andrew Ladd, who were surprisingly good at trivia.

“Your boyfriend doesn’t think it’s weird that you are out drinking with a bunch of good looking guys?” Adam asked Elia in between a round of questions.
“He’s in Boston filming a movie,” she replied.
“That sucks, so you don’t see each other that much?”
“Uhh...Yeah it kind of does, um...we see each other every couple of weeks.”
“I don’t think you’re really that into him.”
“I’m still not really that into you either Burish.”

She had to admit, his self confidence was impressive. A lot of guys were afraid to talk to her, let alone blatantly hit on her. She looked to the right and met his gaze. He was still grinning, despite being shot down. His long hair was tucked behind his ears, his face dotted with stubble. Without his hockey gear on she could see how fit he was. He was wearing a black v-neck tee, and while it wasn’t very tight she noticed how ripped his arms were. Elia had been around professional athletes before, but there were a lot of out of shape baseball players. She looked down and noticed his legs. Suddenly Elia became very aware of how long she had been staring at Adam and looked away abruptly. Her phone rang.

“Speak of the devil, this is Jeremy calling…” she said as she stood up to go outside and take the phone call.

Once she was all the way out the door Adam spoke again.

“Am I the only one that thinks she is actually cuter when she wears glasses?”
“No, I am definitely agreeing with you on that one,” Bryan said.
“I think she was cutest in the Speak movie” Antti said.
“Dude, she was a teenager in that. Niemi that is one of the weirdest things you’ve ever said.” Kane said as he shook his head.

It was a while before Elia came back, but when she did finish the phone call she brought shot glasses and a bottle of Glenfiddich back to the table with her. As soon as the karaoke started to get set up Elia and Versteeg rushed the table with their submissions. The first song was a Black Eyed Peas song that had just come out called “Meet Me Halfway”. Kane, Versteeg, Elia, and a girl they met at the bar named Christine sang together. Elia was a terrible dancer. Truthfully, also a pretty bad singer. Overall it was a horrifying rendition. Versteeg made the artistic choice of singing Fergie’s lyrics, while everyone else sang Will.I.Am’s part.

“You are such a good singer Kris, like I don’t even know why you play hockey,” Elia said drunkenly back at the table.
Versteeg was smiling, “Are you saying I am bad at hockey?”
“Noooo just that you are the best singer! You should have a cool rapper name. It would be Versteezy!”
“Versteezy, I like it. Beauty.”
“That is the worst thing I’ve heard all night, and I just heard you guys sing that awful song,” said Jonathan.
“Jonny be careful I might make you sing a song with me,” Elia teased. He almost smiled.

Bryan Campbell and Brent Seabrook sang “I would walk 500 miles” together, which made everyone laugh. Versteeg and Elia did a Kelly Clarkson song, and everyone did some more shots. It was nearing 1:00 am when Elia and Adam’s names were called to sing the next song, but he was walking out the door with a girl he had met at the bar. Jonny saw the look of disappointment on her face.

“I think I owe you a song?” He said as he walked up to her.
“You’ll sing?!”
“Yeah, what are we in for?”

Jonathan usually wasn’t a big karaoke singer, but luckily it turned out to be a song he knew. He barely needed to read the words off the screen.

“I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line
As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've known proves that it's right
Because you're mine, I walk the line”

Elia was a lot better at singing country than she was pop music. Versteeg booed her for singing a slow song, and for the first time Jonathan laughed. Then he leaned over and quietly said to Elia “This is pretty typical Burish, just so you know. His attention tends to wander.” She didn’t say anything. When the bar closed, everyone went home except Elia, Versteeg and Kane who walked down to the 4 am bar Boss Bar.

Sometime around 9:30 the three of them woke up in Elia’s living room, with the sun beating down on them through the windows. Elia and Patrick were curled up in a blanket on the chaise lounge chair of the sectional. Kris was laying across the couch wearing a completely different set of clothes than he had gone out with.

“Fuuuuck…” Kris sat up. Elia tried to stand up but gave up quickly. Kane got up and pulled her to her feet. The tv was on, set on the menu screen of the “Chronicles of Narnia” dvd.

“I don’t even own that dvd…” Elia muttered as she turned off the tv. A redbox case lay on the floor. “What kind of drunk person goes to a Redbox and gets ‘Chronicles of Narnia?’”
“I don’t know, but let’s never speak of this to anyone.”
“Who is Prince Caspian…” Kane wondered aloud.
“We might never know.” Elia muttered, “Damn it, it’s Thursday. Nowhere will be open for brunch.”

They ended up at McDonald’s for breakfast. Versteeg had gotten a girl’s number the night before but couldn’t remember what she looked like. They looked through their phones to try and pick her out of some pictures they took. Nobody recognized anybody.

“McDonald’s brunch should have mimosas,” Elia said. The guys agreed. They all had to be at Johnny’s Ice house at 11:00 so they didn’t linger long. They stopped back at Elia’s so she could shower then drove to the practice rink.

If Jonny had been mad at Elia the day before at practice, he was livid today. While everyone headed out to the ice he held Elia back in the locker room.

“You had Kane out til 4 in the morning!” He yelled.
“It’s only two hours later,”
“4 AM! This wasn’t an off day, we have practice. You have literally been here for less than 24 hours and are already--”
“Hey, that is not fair! I didn’t force drinks down anyone’s throat, it is not fair for you to blame me. And you seemed pretty ok with it last night!”
“This cannot be a recurring theme for the year Elia. I need guys fully rested and fully hydrated when they show up to ANY practice. If this ever happens on a game day…” He was too angry to think of a suitable threat.
“If you think your guys wouldn’t have been out if I wasn’t around, you are seriously naive. I’m not the one who came up with the idea to go to Boss Bar. I’ve never even been there before.”

She got up and walked out of the room. Elia stayed off the ice that day. She sat on the bench and played around with the film from the day before. The guys kept coming over to talk to her anyways. Every time somebody stopped by she could feel Toews eyes on her. He’s not even a coach, she thought. He’s just a captain. She shouldn’t let him get to her. Burish had barely said hello to her all day. She wondered if his infatuation with her was over. Why do I care, she thought. She took out her phone and looked at her last text from Jeremy. He wasn’t really okay with her being out all night with a bunch of hockey players. Niklas Hjalmarsson sat down next to her. He asked her what was wrong. She started to say nothing, then changed her mind. She told Hjalmarsson about her boyfriend being jealous, about the distance between them.

“When I first moved here my girlfriend Elina was still in Sweden for some time. I didn’t think it was fair to move her all the way here until I was officially on the roster. It was hard.”

Elia looked at him. He was smiling encouragingly.

“If it is meant to be it is worth it to go through the trouble for a while.”
“I’m not sure it is...meant to be that is…Sometimes I can’t even remember why we started dating in the first place. Our friends say we are a ‘toxic’ couple.”
“You’re a beautiful, independent girl. You don’t need to waste your time in the wrong relationship.”
“Thanks Niklas, that’s really sweet.”

What was she staying with Jeremy for? They spent half their time arguing anyways. I am independent, she thought, I don’t need to be in a relationship. She talked with Hjalmarsson a while longer, learning about Elina and his family. She looked up and saw Toews looking at her from across the ice. He turned away as soon as he realized she was looking back at him. Maybe Toews didn’t want her around, but Elia really felt like she was becoming friends with the guys, even though it had only been a day.
