Disco Fries

I jumped into my Mazda at a very early 6:00 am, super excited to get back to school. Jeez, I never thought I would say that! I was so sick of sitting around the house while Jon went to practice. Everyday was the same, and I felt so disgusting.

Lesson plans and my lap top in tow, I parked my car and headed into the school. I stopped first in the main office to visit Suzanne.

"Hey suzanne, guess whose back!" I exclaimed as she ran around her desk to give me a hug, "Calm down Suz, you saw me like last night- literally."

"Sorry Liz it's just that this place," She lowered her voice "Is the most boring place ever when I don't have you!"

"Aw thanks Suz! I take it I got a lot of mail while I was gone?"

"Yo did indeed, mostly get well soon cards- promise me you'll use the gift cards they gave you on us?" She laughed as she handed me a bunch of colorful envelopes.

"Why of course! Lunch tomorrow on me!" I exclaimed gathering my stuff, "Alright i'll see you later!"

"Wait....uh... have you ever watched Dance Moms?"

"Huh?"

"Yeah it's like these moms who like have daughters" This was weird, Suzanne could babble but never this early in the morning, "And the daughters like dance I guess."

I could see Suz not even looking at me, and her gaze was at something behind me, I followed her pupils from her left to her right and out the front door to the school.

"You okay Suz, you seem kinda off." I began.

"What- oh sorry! Uh, no coffee this morning, you know but i'll see you later!"

Suzanne gave me a quick wave as she raced to pick up a phone on the other side of the room. I walked down the hallway and into my classroom. I gasped. A huge banner hung above my desk that said "WELCOME BACK MS.HULBERT!" I also saw multiple cards sitting on my desk from most of my classes. "Glad to have you back!"- Period 1, "We missed you!"- Period 4, and "Welcome back!"- Period 8. Tears started to well up in my eyes. I was so busy with the class cards that I didn't even realize the flowers.

To my left were a huge vase full of Tulips- one of my favorites. There was also a piping hot cup of Dunkin Donuts right next to it. It seemed like someone was in here about 5 minutes ago. Attached to the vase was a note which I opened and it read:

To Ms. Hulbert:

Good luck today and welcome back.

That Jon honestly. After a couple minutes of sippin my coffee I realized. While I was talking to Suzanne Jon must have been putting this in my office and when Suzanne was trying to talk to me about Dance Moms, he must of snuck out of the front door. So, Suz distracted me while he left! I immediately sent Jon a text message.

Me: Thank you "Mr.Merill" for the flowers and coffee- very unexpected!

I quickly got a message back from Jon.

Jon: That does have a nice ring to it- maybe I should of became a teacher

Me: Yeah, not a good idea. Gotta go ttyl :)

Jon: :)


The first period bell rang and my students came flooding in with smiles on their faces. Many of them said "Welcome back" or "Feel better" which I replied with a kind thank you everytime.

"Alright guys, don't think we are getting a free day! Let's learn about the after mass of the Civil war! Woohoo!" I threw my hands in the air while the class let out a in sync groan.



At lunchtime I decided to stay in my office, I really couldn't deal with another person saying welcome back. I pulled out my lunch box, not knowing what was in it because Jon wouldn't let me open it until lunchtime. I opened up my lunchbox and saw a bowl of lettuce, carrots, and crutons, and next to it- Jon's caesar dressing. In my lunch was also a cut up apple, a special K bar, and a diet coke including a note that said "enjoy :)- J" I smiled at the caesar salad thinking of that morning.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

"Ughhh" I groaned hitting off my alarm clock readying myself to get out of my warm bed and Jon's chest.

"Do you have to go?" Jon asked scaring me and nuzzling his head into my neck, "Can't you just be injured for another week?"

I laughed and got out of the bed. "Jon you have practice pretty soon so you may as well get up also."

"Ugh, don't remind me." Jon got out of the bed and walked into the living room to get changed into his workout clothes.

I walked into my closet and threw on a pair of jeggings, a floral top, and a green sweater. When I got out of the closet Jon was making the bed.

"I'm gonna go on a run," He kissed the top of my head, "So i'll probably be gone when you leave. I made you a lunch for your first day back it's in the fridge. Promise you won't look until lunch?"

"Jon, that's so sweet," I wrapped my arms around his muscular chest and laying my head there, "And I promise I won't open it until lunch."

"Okay, i'll see you later." He kissed me on the lips and walked out of the bedroom and I could hear the front door slam.

Son of a bitch never went for a run did he? I laughed to myself as enjoyed my caesar salad and graded some work the sub left.

"Hey Liz, you busy?" I looked up to see Rob Myers.

Rob is a 10th grade english teacher. We met on my first day here and became a thing way to fast. Before I knew it we were having sex left and right and he was on the verge of proposal before I got my head on straight and ended it. It sounds weird, but we are good friends now. I'm pretty sure he still is in love with me, but hey, I can't stop it.

"Rob!" I exclaimed jumping out of my desk chair and hopping into his arms, "How are you!"

"Not as bad as you that's for sure! Seriously though, how are you feeling?"

"Eh, could be better. I sure did get a lot of cards and stuff now that i'm back though!"

I could see Rob's eyes go to the tulips on my desk, "You're favorite...who are they from?"

I could see the hurt in his eyes so I decided to spare him the details.

"Just some guy I know, nothing too big I promise." I smiled, "Would you like to join me for lunch?"
