The Wall

Cursed

"Miller" called Marchand "let's go." He and Brad jogged back to his apartment. After Brad left he put the phone on the bathroom vanity and hopped in the shower. After getting cleaned up from the his run he dressed and went in the living room to watch sports center. He was subconsciously willing the phone to ring. In the mean time he grabbed his phone and dialed his teammate Milan Lucic. He asked Looch if Brittany was around. Looch indicated she was with him and they were watching Frozen with Valentina for the millionth time. He explained the situation with the girl to Looch. Which had Looch laughing.

"Damn Miller, you checked a 5ft tall blonde and broke her shoe. Impressive even for you."
"Fuck off, Lucic can I talk to Britt."
"You are on speaker talk."
Kevan asked Brittany how to buy shoes for a girl when you had no idea what size she wore. Britt giggled and gave her him the name of a shoe store out at Copley Place. She told him to get her gift card. Looch laughed again.
"Damn it Looch, it's not that funny."
"Oh but it is be prepared to drop about a grand when you get there."
"On shoes?" He asked in confusion
This time it was Britt laughing " yep they are the best. Good luck."

Kevan grabbed the phone and his keys and made his way to the store Britt recommended. Jimmy Choo sounded more like a gangster from Chinatown than a shoe store but whatever. He pulled his ball cap lower and went inside. Upon walking in the door he realized he didn't belong in the boutique. A sale associate in a low cut black blouse, tight skirt, and fuck me pumps put her hand on his arm and purred " what can I help you with Mr. Miller." Damn he liked it better when no one knew his name. He explained he needed a gift card for his girlfriend hoping she would release the hold she had on his arm. She looked majorly disappointed but lead him to the sales station. She asked him how much. He remember Looch's parting words and said $1000. Hoping to get out without getting any more attention. The sales associate completed his transaction and scrawled something on the receipt. Checking out the receipt in the car he saw her name and phone number written in black ink. He shook his head girls throwing themselves at him was getting less and less amusing. Putting the SUV in drive he headed back towards his apartment. If he was going to wait for the phone to ring he was going to catch up on Game of Thrones.

Hadlee made it back to court in time but her spare shoes were not in her car. She was currently slightly hobbling while asking the Judge for continuance as her client failed to appear. She had two more cases on the docket. Once she left the courthouse she could call her roommate Caroline to bring her a pair of shoes. She thought back to the Wall as she had been calling him. He was gorgeous even dripping with sweat. Hadlee was starting to day dream about what might have been hidden under that tight black t shirt when the judge called her next case. She tried to stay behind the table so no one would notice her shoes. She survived court made the short walk to the public parking structure and headed to her office. She unlocked the her Fiat and sat her purse on the roof and dug for her phone. It was no where to be found. She went back and looked on counsel table. No luck. She groaned she drove to the coffee shop and asked if anyone turned in an iPhone. The guy laughed and said it was a lost cause and people in Boston weren't as naive as people from Georgia. Hadlee glared at him and said "wrong state."

Hadlee drove to her apartment. She changed out of her work clothes and into a pair of frayed cut offs and a uk basketball baseball style shirt. She took her hair out of her work hairstyle and shook it out. She promptly pulled it up into a messy bun on top of her head. Caroline breezed into the apartment. "Bitch" she joked "hot shot lawyer to good to text your roommate back." Hadlee groaned and launched into the story about the Wall. Caroline interrupted and said so what is the hot walls name. Caroline laughed at Hadlee's expression, laughed harder at Hadlee's shoes, and thought the fact Hadlee didn't know his name was hilarious. When Hadlee got to the part about her missing phone Caroline snorted.

"So we call your phone and see if Mr. Tall, Hot, and Sweaty answers." stated Caroline
" it's insured. I'll just have to turn it in and get a new one."
"Fat chance" laughed Caroline dialing the phone.

Kevan lounged on his couch and watched Game of Thrones. Just as the fate of the imp was to be decided a strange noise began playing from near his keys. He made to the phone as it started chanting Cats Cats Cats. He answered the phone with a simple hello.

"Who is this" demanded the voice on the phone.
" Kevan Miller" he replied and before he could explain how he came to have the phone the voice demanded to know how he got Miss Reynold's phone. He told her about running into Miss Reynolds and saving her phone so he could return it. The voice then laughed. He asked if he could talk to Miss Reynolds. The voice asked how he knew he wasn't talking to Miss Reynolds. Kevan replied that the girl he ran into had a southern accent. The voice laughed said to hold on and that Had is definitely southern.
Kevan then heard a hey on the line. She sounded like one of those country music singers Kelly blared in the locker room. He gave her his name and explained that he owed her a pair of shoes and a drink.
"I told you not to worry about it" she said exasperated

He began rambling again about being sorry and that he was supposed to only do that kind of damage on ice. He then reminded her he had her phone. Hadlee began telling him that she would have a courier service come get it from him. Caroline snatched the phone away. Caroline gave him the name of the bar they headed to to watch the UK play. Caroline then told him to come there at 8 bring the phone and few of his friends. Kevan quickly agreed and Caroline hung up. He then called Dougie, Krug, and Marchy. The boys agreed to meet at his apartment and drive over. He wasn't sure how smart it was to go to a sports bar in Boston even at that tail end of off season, but he wouldn't see Miss Reynold's any other way.

The guys walked into Clarkes and things kind of ground to a halt. Then immediately picked back up. The bartenders and most of the patrons recognized the 4 guys but were trying to be cool. That's when Kevan saw her standing yelling a tv screen with what appeared to be the University of Kentucky playing football. She had her hair falling in blonde waves around her shoulders, had on a tight baseball shirt, cut offs that made him do a double take, and blue flip flops. She was wearing flip flops in a bar and his inner Californian growled to life. He then saw her surrounded by 4 other girls.

"Had quit screaming at the TV. They still won't let you coach and you guys aren't going to win." Laughed a brunette. Kevan recognized her voice she was a the girl from the phone. His little blonde picked up what looked like a tumble of whiskey and took a drink. She turned to the brunette "damn Caroline I bleed blue! Of course we can't win were a cursed." The boys and Kevan came over to the table.
"Why are you cursed" asked Kevan.

Hadlee turned to answer and there was the Wall. He was still tall, still hot, but no longer sweaty. Hadlee took in the uk blue button down and how well his jeans fit. Damn he is hot.

"Christ Hadlee! Do you know who they are?" asked Caroline
" Well judging by the fact this is the second time today he and that fellow have been dressed identical, the look on your faces, and the facts 2 of them don't look old enough to drink. I'm going with boys band."

The look on the Walls face was priceless. Hadlee laughed and Kevan loved that sound. She looked at Caroline and said "no clue."

The smaller guy who had ran up to the Wall earlier smirked and said " you have no clue who we are." The tall red headed guy laughed. Hadlee wasn't sure if it was due to her lack of knowledge or because the little guy was flabbergasted.

The Wall put his hand out towards Hadlee. Hadlee shook his hand as he introduced himself as Kevan Miller. His large rough hand was huge compared to Hadlee's. Caroline, Maggie, Alayna, and Kacey were staring at the guys.

"Well don't keep me in suspense" said Hadlee " who are y'all?" Caroline took another drink of beer. Then said "they are Bruins" As if that meant something to Hadlee. " they play hockey in the NHL. Leave it to Hadlee to get checked by our new defensive monster and have no clue who he is."

Hadlee took a drink of her bourbon and looked at Kevan " Sorry been here a month and the only sports I really keep up with are UK. Not a lot of ice in Kentucky. "

" Way to go Millsy. You found the one chick in Boston who doesn't know who we are." said the little fellow.
Kevan pulled her phone out if his back pocket and handed it to her. Hadlee pointed at the table and asked if they wanted to sit. The guys joined the table and introduced themselves. Dougie went to get drinks for the table. Hadlee was aware of Kevan sitting beside her. She thought it was odd that his cologne reminded her of the beach. The lil guy Brad began cutting up he had Caroline and the girls giggling. Hadlee turned her attention back to the television and yelled at the players.

Kevan leaned in and asked her again " Why is your team cursed?" Hadlee finished the bourbon and placed the glass on the table near Kevan.
"Paul Bear Bryant" she replied looking at his greenish eyes.
"What does the Alabama football coach have to do with Kentucky football?" asked Krug the only other American player there.
" Exactly Doll" said Hadlee. Kevan looked at Krug he didn't particularly like the fact that Hadlee called him doll. He wouldn't mind her calling him doll. " Did you know that Bear Bryant coached at UK at the same time as Adolph Rupp?"
Tory picked up his beer and shook his head. Hadlee continued " Coach Rupp didn't like Bryant. Told UK they needed to pick him or Bear Bryant. UK chose Rupp and a basketball dynasty. They put Bryant on a plane to College Station, Texas. Y'all that very act upset the football gods. And from that point on we've been cursed."
Kevan laughed " are you serious?"
"Of course I'm serious we don't joke around about SEC football," replied Hadlee

Brad looked at Kevin " we got get her to a game. She'd be a riot once she got into it." Kevan nodded in agreement. They all sat around and watched UK lose and drank a few beers. The more Kevan talked to Hadlee the more he liked her. She didn't seem to care that he was quasi famous. She cracked jokes and held her own with Marchy. She announced they needed to head home that she had a trial tomorrow. Brad asked what she was being tried for? Hadlee laughed and said "I'm a lawyer." Brad finished his beer and said "impressive." Kevan was definitely impressed. They started walking toward the door and Kevan placed his hand at the small of her back and lead her out. Hadlee enjoyed having his large hand there. Kevan noticed how tiny she was as they walked. Brad was walking on her other side.

"Hadlee how tall are you?" asked Brad " you make me and Tory look tall. From now on I'm gonna make them interview me standing next to you so I look like a giant."
"Damn Marchy" growled Kevan "leave her alone."
" I'm 5 ft even"

Kevan looked at her that had been his guess. She had been a little taller in the heels. Fuck thought Kevan. He pulled the gift card out of his pocket. He leaned down to Hadlee and told her he was sorry about her shoes. Hadlee smacked his arm. "I told you to quit apologizing." He handed her the little card with with sparkly shoes on it. She stared at it, but said nothing.

"Britt said that would take care of your shoes since I didn't know your size. If it's not right we can fix it." Kevan rambled.
" I can't take this" gasped Hadlee " it's worth more than a house payment. I got those shoes at Target."
Kevan grabbed her hand and told she had to take it because he could have a hurt her and he ruined her shoes. She kept insisting. He then leaned down and whispered to her " don't make me take it back. The girl working there wrote her number on the receipt, I almost got molested, and the only number I want today is yours." Hadlee noticed both sets of friends were talking but looking at them huddled together. Hadlee asked for his phone and programmed her number into it when she handed it back he dialed the number. Her phone began to play the uk fight song. He said now you have my number. Hadlee motioned for Kevan to lean down. She kissed him on the cheek and said "Thank you." She hugged him and felt his solid body. She could get used to that. Hadlee then climbed into the cab with her girls and was gone. Marchy asked him if he got her phone number. He nodded his head. Marchy then made some remark about having a little miller time with Hadlee. He reached out and smacked Marchy in the back of the head. Brad rubbed the back of his head "damn Millsy. I got it you like her."

On the cab ride back to her apartment the girls giggled and acted like middle schoolers discussing the guys. Caroline nudged her "so you kissed him" Hadlee said "on the cheek as a thank you." She handed Caroline the little card. "Damn it Hadlee. The only way to thank Miller for that is with those shoes up around his shoulders." The girls all started cackling. Hadlee looked out the window and blushed. She kind of hoped Caroline was right. Once the girls were dropped off when it was just her and Caroline she stared at the phone and his number. She saved it in her address book. She crawled in the bed and put the phone on the charger. It dinged a few minutes later.
Kevan: I'm glad I ran into you
Hadlee: Thanks for my phone and the shoes.
Kevan: You can replace the work ones and buy a pair to wear on our date.
Hadlee: What date?
Kevan: tomorrow 7?
Hadlee: Can't huge trial this week. But I would love to see you. Do you want to come over here after court. We can order pizza and watch a movie or something?
Kevan: Sure but I still want to take you on a real date.
Hadlee: I'll text you tomorrow.
Kevin: Goodnight Miss Reynolds.
Hadlee: Nite Mr. Miller
Hadlee was smiling as she rolled over to go to sleep. She made a mental note to read up on hockey.

Notes

Yes I took a little creative license with the UK football schedule. Like Hadlee said doesn't matter when or where we play we're cursed. Hope you like it so far
