The Wall

What is it?

Hadlee sat at counsel table beside her client and wondered for probably the thousandth time why they were having this farce of a trial. Her client was a persistent felony offender who had allegedly been caught trafficking drugs within a hundred yards of a school. He refused to take any offers from the prosecuting attorney claiming he was set up by a cop who wanted him as a confidential informant. Hadlee had repeatedly told him that taking this to trial was not in his best interest, but what did she know? So now she sat listening to the third police officer attempt to place her client at the scene of the alleged incident. Hadlee was staring at her phone wondering if she should text Kevan about dinner or if the noon hour was too early. She was lost in her thoughts when the judge called her name.

"Miss Reynolds, do you wish to cross examine Officer Riley?" asked the judge looking perturbed.
"Yes your Honor!" she replied quickly

Hadlee asked him the same questions she asked the two previous officers. But had a few punches to pull at the end.

"Officer Riley did you actually see my client sell any type of narcotics at the school in question?"
"Yes" replied the officer
"Officer Riley, you previously testified that you were approximately 100 yards away from the perpetrator, correct?"
"Yes"
"It was near midnight and there are limited street lights on that corner, correct?"
"Yes"
" The alleged perpetrator was wearing a hooded Boston Bruins sweatshirt and dark jeans. The perpetrator in fact had the hood up covering his face."
"Yes"
"So in the dark with no lights a football field away you expect a jury to believe that you could see and identify my client with out a doubt."
" yes"
"Did you all arrest my client at the scene?"
"No"
"In fact you arrested him 3 months later?"
"Yes in a round up of drug dealers."
"Do you have photos of my clients selling narcotics?"
"No"
"Video or audio of my clients selling narcotics?"
"No"
"Did you or did you not tell my client while he was in holding at the precinct that this would all go away if he agreed to be your CI?"
"Yes,but...."
Hadlee interrupted him with a another question "yes or no is all I need officer. Did you tell him if he refused you would see he paid for his crimes and a few others."
"Yes, but it's just talk."
"Just talk without counsel present, that puts my client in a precarious place."
"Objection" shouted opposing counsel
" Withdrawn" replied Hadlee " No further questions."

The case was bound over until the following day. Her client asked to speak with her before he was taken back to the jail. He told Hadlee he appreciated her listening to him about the CI stuff and he was glad she replaced the last suit. Hadlee told him not to get his hopes up. Hadlee loaded her trial box and her Coach bag into her Fiat. She went to the office and was interrogated herself about the case she was trying. Her boss told her she must be doing something right because the prosecutor called to complain about her last cross examination. Hadlee laughed. Mark one of the senior partners cracked a joke about their little belle having teeth. Hadlee ignored him and went to her office to text Kevan.

Hadlee: Wanna go shoe shopping? Out of trial early today Judge has an early afternoon tee time.
Hadlee was getting her trial box in order for the next day when her phone chirped. She finished getting the files and exhibits in order before reading the message.
Kevan: Depends will you protect me from the scary puck bunny?
Hadlee: I thought Brad said you were some sort of badass... Scared of a little girl?
Kevan: Brad has a big mouth. I hold my own on the ice. However off the ice I'm not supposed to knock people around like rag dolls. Hence why I still feel bad about running into you. She isn't a girl she is a full blown puck bunny. I even told her I was buying the gift card for my girlfriend and she still wrote her number on the receipt.
Hadlee: So first you try and kill me, then tell some slutty chick I'm your girlfriend?

When Kevan didn't replied immediately she got nervous. She threw a few more post notes and legal tablets into the trial box. Her phone began ringing.

"Hey" said Hadlee
"Sorry, I hate texting long messages. Plus Brad is trying to read them over my shoulder and is now hovering like a giant fucking gnat."
"Hi Marchy" called Hadlee

Brad snatched the phone from Miller and quickly made his way through the weight room. "So my boy is going to take you shoe shopping eh Wildcat? He's been standing on his head here at practice wondering if you are gonna text. Nearly took Tuuk's head off with a wild shot."

"Not sure he hasn't said yes yet. Explain to me what a puck bunny is?"
" A puck bunny" snickered Brad " is a girl who will fuck a hockey player just because he plays hockey."

Hadlee started laughing. She heard a racket on the phone. She was pretty sure Kevan told Brad he was going to fucking kill him if he didn't give him the phone. She heard a clatter and then an accented "hello"
"Hi" replied Hadlee
"So Miller is trying to kill Marchy and I should probably break it up. But now I talk to the pretty girl. "
"Which one are you?" She asked sure she would have remember the voice if he had been there last night
"I'm Tuukka. I'm the goalie. I think Millsy is making his way to you. Next time you bring beautiful girls to the bar tell Miller to call me."

"So still wanna shop for shoes?" asked Kevan in a sheepish voice.
"Yes and I promise to protect you from the scary bunny."
Kevan laughed. " okay I ran over to practice so I will run home shower and then pick you up." She told him she would text him her address when she left the office. When she made to to the Fiat she texted him the address and began driving home. The drive that normally took 20 minutes morphed into 45.

"So I am getting ready for work lo and behold Tall, Hot, and Sweaty is here." laughed Caroline
"Please tell me he can't hear you."
"No worries Sista. I parked him on the couch and turned on ESPN. What should I tell him?"
" I'm 5 minutes away traffic sucks."

Caroline yelled through the apartment that Hadlee was stuck in traffic and would be home in a few minutes. "He said it's okay. Between me and you he might be hotter today than yesterday."
Hadlee disconnected the phone and pondered how that was even possible.

Hadlee rushed into the apartment. Kevan was sitting on her couch watching a baseball game. Hadlee couldn't believe how much she liked the fact that he seemed at home in her and Caroline's apartment. Hadlee took in the spectacle that was Kevan Miller. He had definitely not shaved and was scruffy. He was wearing a black under armor polo, cargo shorts, and flip flops. A matching under armor hat was on the couch beside him. His hair looked like he had been running his fingers through it trying to fix his hat hair. It was sexy. He was effortlessly hot and probably didn't even realize it.

"Sorry I got caught in traffic." said Hadlee as she dropped her giant purse on the table by the door. Kevan stood up and walked over to Hadlee. She looked up at him and smiled. Even in heels she was still a foot shorter than him. She had on heels that were almost the same color as her tan legs. Hadlee squeezed him in a quick hug and told him she would be back in a second after she changed. Once she flitted out of his arms he watched her walk away. Damn, he was in trouble and he knew it. Hadlee had on a purplish dress that wrapped around her body and tied in a bow on the side. No matter what angle you looked at her she was all curves in all the right places. Her blonde hair was up in some knot looking thing. Every time he looked at her his inner caveman wanted to mess up all that polished perfection. He wasn't sure if he liked professional Hadlee or casual Hadlee the better. But he was pretty sure if he could manage it naked Hadlee would be his favorite.

"Easy Miller" laughed Caroline "She can dress and undress herself."
Kevan blushed and sat back down on the couch. " How long have you roomed together?"
"Since we were seventeen. I went to undergrad at UK and we were roommates that were randomly paired. Been 10 years now."
Hadlee came back into the room "yep Caroline is definitely my longest relationship."
Kevan mind was spinning did he read this entire thing wrong.
"Mind out if the gutter Miller. She's teasing. Unless you are into that sort of..." Caroline's speech was interrupted by Hadlee tossing keys at her.
"Take my car so you won't have to take the T tonight."
"No way I am driving that thing anywhere." replied Caroline
"It's not a thing." pouted Hadlee

Hadlee grabbed her giant purse and pushed sunglasses up on top of her head. Kevan grabbed his ball cap off the couch and followed the girls. Hadlee had put on a quarter length sleeve Rolling Stone tee and a different pair of cutoff than the one from the bar. Kevan was beginning to think he needed to say a prayer of thanks to Daisy Duke. She shoved her feet into a pair of sparkly red Toms. Caroline turned to lock the door and told Kevan he was the tie breaker on the thing she called a car. They all 3 got in the elevator to the ground floor garage. Kevan noticed that Hadlee had backed herself up against him in the elevator. She smelled like sugar and lemons. When the doors opened she grabbed him by the hand and let him toward a car????

Hadlee and Caroline both stood side by side looking at the tiny vehicle. It was bright UK blue. Kevan was pretty sure he could pick it up and move it if he wanted. He wasn't sure he should tell Hadlee that though.

"It's not a real car Hadlee" crowed Caroline
"It is too. It's a Fiat pop."
"Tall, Hot, Sweaty won't even fit into the thing" giggled Caroline "alright Kevan you are the tie breaker car or not"
Hadlee looked expectantly at Kevan. Great he thought Caroline has fucked me from the start of the date. Kevan walked around and looked at the tiny vehicle. He was pretty sure they could park it inside Rask's goal. "Caroline's right I won't fit I your car so we will take mine." Hadlee's face lit up in a smile. She made a motion for him to lean down. She kissed him again this time at the corner of his mouth.
"Nice save Miller!" replied Caroline "Rask's job might be in danger. I'm still not taking your roller skate to work."
