Don't Forget Me

mom

"I want my baby back" were the first words out of her mouth. Jon and I stood side by side, unsure of what our next move would be. I hadn't seen her in what seemed like forever; and I preferred it that way.

"Hello to you too" I answered sarcastically, rolling my eyes. I was all of a sudden glad the Hawks lost. If they hadn't, Gabby would be here, witnessing her obviously high mother beg for her back. I knew immediately it wasn't something Gabby wanted. She was adjusting to life with us so well; I knew she had no interest to returning to her mother. She adored Ryder and Aveyah, and they adored her; I wasn't going to lose her.

"I'm not here for a reunion" she snapped back aggressively. Her eyes were bloodshot, her breath reeking of alcohol. There was a white substance beneath her nose; she had just did cocaine.

"No shit" I smirked. Jon tried to retain his laughter beside me. Lisa gave me a look of death so violent I swear I was going to turn into stone or something.

"Look Addison" she scoffed, walking closer to Jon. "You have my daughter, and I want the little bitch back" I arched an eyebrow; her attitude was not winning me over.

"Yeah, like id ever give her to someone who talks about her like that" I pointed out, anger heard clearly in my voice.

"I don't think you have a choice, Addison" she protested, a smug look of satisfaction on her face.

"What makes you say that?" I cocked my was to the side, unsure of what she meant. The kids had been taken from her and my brother for a reason; I had no intentions of giving Gabby back; ever.

"She's my daughter" she answered simply. This time Jon nor I could hold in our laughter; did she really think a coke addict would get back custody of her eldest child?

"And you're a druggie" I informed her gently. "Courts don't really approve of a parent dealing and doing drugs" I added with a grin of victory. She stood in her spot for a moment, clearly having an inner debate of what to say next.

"Doesn't matter- she's my daughter" she replied quickly. I rolled my eyes; was she really this dense? Nobody in their right mind would let a child go with her; she was crazy to think so.

"You can't be that dense" Jon took the words right out of my mouth. I bit back a grin, trying not to laugh at his words. "Also, is that cocaine under your nose or...?" He trailed off and this time I did laugh. She hastily wiped it away, an even more angry expression crossing her face.

"Look Lisa- I think it's time you quit embarrassing yourself and just leave. Gabby is with us now; just accept it and move on" I told her gently.

"She's gonna get it when I get ahold of her" Lisa sneered. "I hope she doesn't have the same attitude problem the both you have" she added In disgust.

"Least I don't beat my children" I pointed out trimpuphanty.

"Children need a little discipline" Lisa reasoned.

"Yeah, sure. But they don't need a beating" Jon spoke up.

"Or name calling" I added in disappointment at her style of parenting. Luckily for me, Gabby was nothing like her mother; she wasn't even like her father, for that matter. "How you guys gave birth to such a nice child is beyond me"

"Fuck yourself" she retorted immaturely.

"Very adult like, mhm you're really winning your case over" Jon rolled his eyes sarcastically.

"I told you/- it's not a case, she's my goddamn daughter!"

"Lisa?" Both of our eyes headed for the source of the voice. Gabby stood behind her mother, eyes wide with fear. Ryder and Aveyah stood beside her, not having a clue what was going on. Aveyah rubbed the sleep out of her eyes, running over to Jon and hopping into his arms.

"Yes it's me, but I'm mom remember?" She asked her daughter. It was evident in her tone and her facial expressions she wasn't impressed with her daughter's use of her first name.

"You're not my mother" Gabby sneered, face twisting in rage.

"Uh- yes honey, I am" Lisa eyes her daughter with confusion. Grabbing Ryder's hand, she walked past her mother, standing firmly by my side.

"This is my mum- and this is my dad" she pointed to Jon and I. We both turned to Lisa, nodding, not showing our true emotions. I could have cried I was so shocked; she considered us her parents?

"They're nothing" she snapped, clearly frustrated. "Now let's go, it's getting past bedtime" she tried to grab Gabby's hand, but she tugged it away violently.

"You know nothing about me, Lisa" Gabby whispered. "These two right here, my mom and dad-" she began to choke up a little. I squeezed her shoulder in support, and she instantly relaxed at my touch. "They've given me everything; advice, a roof over my head, a comforting shoulder, help wih homework.. way more than you've ever been able to give me"

"Oh bullshit- I know all about you!" She protested.

"Prove it!" Gabby answered immediately.

"Uh- what do you want to know?" She asked, a little taken aback.

"Favourite color"

"Who the hell cares?" Lisa spat.

"Purple" I affirmed, and Gabby nodded.

"Favourite class in school?" Was her next question.

"Math" Lisa guessed automatically.

"Actually science, with an interest in chemistry" Jon answered smoothly. Again Gabby nodded, pressing on.

"My birthday?" She cocked an eyebrow curiously.

"September 8th, 2003" Lisa smiled confidently.

"You're not even close... July 27th 2004" I shot back.

Lisa stood where she was, stunned into place; she had no idea what to say. She looked a little hurt, but mostly hurt filled her dark green eyes. She balled up her fists, taking a deep breath.

"You'll regret this" she snapped, having nothing else to say. Gabby rolled her eyes, scoffing as she did so.

"Just go"

"Fuck you Addison" she snapped. "You'll get it someday, I swear" and with that, she took one last look at Gabby with hatred in her eyes before vanishing around the corner, and out of the arena.

We all stood in silence for a moment, unsure of what to say. Gabby turned to Jon and I with a huge smile on her face.

"Are you okay?" Ryder asked innocently, sensing something was wrong. Gabby smiled and picked him up, planting a kiss on his right cheek.

"Never better, buddy. I've got the best family anyone could ask for" she smiled up at Jon and I. I couldn't help it any longer; a round of tears started rolling happily down my face.

"Don't cry mom" she comforted me. "We've got too much to celebrate!" Jon and I looked at her, a little lost. "We've only got a few months to plan a party for the return of chicagos best captain and centreman" she winked happily.
