Should Have Known Better (Needlephobia)
Act 1: Scene 9
Setting: Sidney’s office
Enter SIDNEY from L.S., pushing out JONATHAN, who is still stuck to the chair. He is wide awake. He struggles against the bonds.
JONATHAN
Please, let me go! I can’t take the pretense anymore! Please!
SIDNEY
Hush! And hold still, I want to stick the needle into your arm!
JONATHAN
No!! Please! Don’t!
SIDNEY
Stop moving!
(SIDNEY smacks JONATHAN across the face. He slaps his hand over JONATHAN’S mouth and inches the needle closer to his skin. JONATHAN squirms, stifling cries of fear.)
SIDNEY
It’s not so bad when you think about it; you could be a Merinthophobic, like your little twin!
SARA
(skidding out from L.S.)
Stop right there! Back away from that Needlephobic Boy!
SIDNEY
(jabbing the needle into the skin)
You’re too late! He’s my little monkey for my experiments!
SARA
No!!
(SARA dashes forward and shoves SIDNEY away to R.S. She finds the button and presses it. The bonds unlatch, freeing the limp body. SIDNEY recovers and seizes a hold on SARA.)
SIDNEY
Why don’t I just give you a phobia too, my pretty!
SARA
How about not!
(SARA yanks herself free. CRISTINA joins her, sprinting out from L.S., behind her. CRISTINA grabs SIDNEY and holds him back, while SARAA leans over JONATHAN.
SARA tries the fairy tale ending kiss, however it doesn’t work. After a painful song that kills more time, JONATHAN recovers:)

LOST IN THE DARKNESS,

ONCE THERE WAS MORNING,
NOW ENDLESS NIGHT.
IF I COULD REACH YOU,
I'D GUIDE YOU AND TEACH YOU

(blinking awake once more)

NOW FILLED WITH TORTURE BEYOND IMAGINED!

SIDNEY
You think you have won. That is the power of the needle. It tricks. It deceives. That is why I like it so.
(JONATHAN suddenly falls back into unconsciousness. SARA screams and shakes JONATHAN.)
SARA
What did you do?! What did you drug him with?
SIDNEY
I’ll never tell!
CRISTINA
Sara, I think Lindsay has something to do with this!
SARA
How?
CRISTINA
She could be controlling Jonathan’s conscious through the liquid injection.
SARA
Oh crap! You do not have Needlephobia Jonny!
SIDNEY
Wimpy, sissy baby!
SARA
Shut up you have no room to talk!
