ADDISON

Ten years together, today it would be exactly that. Ten years since the day she met him in Florida after the Blackhawks beat the Panthers, she was a waitress getting herself through graduate school to become an English teacher, he was the captain of the Blackhawks. Addison picked up the frame with the picture of the two of them not long after that and put it into her box. Ten years together, of memories, gone in a blink.

She pulled a suitcase out from under the bed packing into it as much of her wardrobe as she could, her heart sunk, she’d given up a guaranteed spot at a good school upon graduating to follow him to Chicago of all places, and then into Canada for summers to train. Sure she had her master’s degree he’d always encouraged her to follow her dreams and though she interviewed for places once she got to Chicago and they were married and settled, she never got a full time position anywhere and before she knew it she was giving birth to their now 3 year old Max. They were just discussing her trying to find a school to teach at again last year when she found out she was pregnant for their six month old Samantha.

He cried the day that little girl was born, cried when Max was born too, even when they got married 5 years ago, well they both cried at those events, but today she would be the only one crying. Her friend had agreed to baby sit so she was alone in the house, and in the silence she felt the 10 years they spent together crumbling around her. She wasn’t sure where it went wrong or even what went wrong all she knew was half of her bed went un-slept in every night, while a guest bed got use, that family dinners that used to be filled with laughter and coy smiles across a table were awkwardly silent. That when their kids were not home but the 2 of them were the house was filled with arguments ranging from stupid things like, emptying the coffee pot to hateful and bitter accusations screamed at each other before doors slammed.

All she knew for sure was that today when the door opened and he stepped inside she wasn’t going to say something cute about this being the day they met, no it would no longer be remembered as that from now on it would be remembered as the day she asked Jon for a divorce, and it was breaking her heart, but what was breaking her heart more was knowing it wouldn’t break his. She finished packing what she could; she was sure she’d be back for the rest eventually and loaded up her car. It was getting dark; she was waiting in the kitchen the divorce papers in front of her when the front door opened.

He didn’t call for her, just made his way into the kitchen and started looking through the fridge. “Jon” she said quietly and he turned to face her, a celery stick hanging out of his mouth, the ingredients for a sandwich in his hands a scene that used to make her laugh “I want a divorce” she said sliding the papers towards him.

JONATHON

His jaw dropped, the celery stick he had in his mouth hit the floor. No, this could not be happening, his worst nightmare was staring him down from the counter, a reminder he somewhere failed. Today of all days, didn’t she know it was the day they met? He didn’t know what to say so he closed his eyes hoping that when they opened again the papers would be gone and his wife would be laughing at the celery stick hanging from his mouth, too many ingredients for a sandwich squished in his hands and she would say something like “hungry much?” as he set everything down on the counter, but when his eyes opened she wasn’t laughing the papers weren’t gone and his world was falling apart.

He turns and puts all of the stuff in his hands back into the fridge and closes the door sitting on a stool across from her; he stares down at the papers. “Addison” he says his voice low and grumbly from yelling across the ice during last night’s game “Are you sure?” he asks and she just nods slowly “Ok, I’ll go” he says and gets up from the counter “No, Jon I’m already packed this was your house before we ever even met” she says getting up and grabbing her keys “We have the kids, you’re not going to leave them here, especially when I’m gone all the time, just keep the house, I don’t want to fight on this I can find a place to stay. Addison please” he says and she regretfully nods.

It had been 4 months since he walked out the front door, since they’d decided in court to try separation for a couple months before officially signing the divorce papers. He didn’t want to fight he knew he failed and so as his last sorry he was willing to give her everything. Turns out she apparently didn’t want to fight either, her only request was one he knew was coming and that any judge would have easily given her, custody of the kids, he gave it to her but asked for regular visits which she was willing to compromise on easily. He gave her the house, told his lawyer to make sure all her financial needs would be met; the final papers were sitting on the small kitchenette table of his apartment. He hated this apartment, he could have gotten something better with no problem but this place was close to the house so he could go see the kids. The papers were still mocking him like they did 4 months ago, he hadn’t signed them yet and he knew the message on his voicemail was Addie asking him again to please remember to sign the papers.

But he couldn’t, he didn’t want to, their sixth wedding anniversary was tomorrow and he wasn’t done with this relationship.

ADDISON

It had been the longest 4 months of her life, she just wanted this over with and yet he couldn’t even take a second out of his “busy schedule” to sign the papers. Didn’t he realize the damage he was doing, giving her false hope that he wanted to reconcile, or maybe he was just doing it to hurt her because he could. Samantha was big now at 10 months and though both kids had just spent time with Jon last week she felt like it was a lifetime ago in the progress of her daughter who had started saying “Da” just two days ago, and letting out an awful wail when only mommy shows up. She just wanted this part over, to know that as much as it hurts she’d have to put ex in front of husband when talking about Jon, that her kids would grow up seeing their dad whenever he was in town for a few days, instead of as often as possible, knowing this house still had hints of him it all hurt. But, so did him being there, because their relationship was null and void even when his presence wasn’t.

---

She woke up to the door bell it was 5am on a Saturday, when her mom had taken the kids last night to take them to the zoo, she groaned and tried to ignore it but the sound was persistent so she fumbled her way down the stairs. Her hair piled on top of her head in a bun, her robe tied tight around her waist, glasses perched on her nose and one eye open in the harsh light of the hall. She pulled open the door to see a huge bouquet of varying flowers all in shades of her favorite color, orange “Mrs. Toews?” the delivery guy questions and she nods “Have a nice day ma’m” he says and walks down the stairs. She brings the large bouquet into the kitchen setting it on the counter to pull the card out of the middle reading the script in familiar handwriting in the middle ‘did you think I’d forget?’ the only thing written there, she spun around to face the calendar on the wall and a small gasps escaped, it was their anniversary, he remembered. She scratched her head, part of her hair toppling from her bun in the process, not knowing what else to do she retrieves her phone and sends him a text ‘the flowers are beautiful, thank you, but 5am?’ she puts the flowers in a vase and sits at the counter twirling her ring that she’d yet to take off waiting for his answer. When her phone buzzes sees it’s a she screen shot from Jon she opens it quickly to see a text message from herself to him 6 years ago timed stamped for 5am reading ‘I can’t possibly sleep another minute, I’m so excited, I love you’ she had forgotten all about that, he didn’t and it brought a smile to her face. She put the phone down and stared between it and her phone, was this just a sick plot where he gets her hopes up and then shows up at her house with signed divorce papers on their anniversary, her inner monologue is interrupted by a text message from Jon ‘I know you’re thinking doom and gloom right now, stop it’

It was 10pm, after her early start to her day, the flowers, the message she thought for sure the next knock on the door was going to be him to whisk her away and tell her that he still loved her but it was 17 hours later, her makeup was done, he hair had been styled into a soft wave the way it was the day they got married, she had on the green dress he loved, and he clearly wasn’t coming. Her outfit had changed throughout the day so she was ready for any event he may have had planned but now she was yawning, the lipstick she’d put on was almost all wore off on her tea cup, and though her dress wasn’t tight it was starting to feel like a jail cell for stupid hopes. She grabs her heels off the floor beside her and starts towards the stairs, her phone distracts her and she sees another screen shot from Jon, she unlocks her phone and looks at the picture another text message from 6 years ago this one from him to her time stamped at 10pm ‘I know you’re sleeping right next to me, but I just wanted to tell you I love you, and I’m so glad you married me’ she reads it and finds a smile creeping onto her face once again.

She hears a knock at the door, a smile spreading further across her face, he hated that door bell the ridiculously long chime it had, he only got it because she thought it sounded pretty, so any time he forgot his keys or locked himself out he would only knock. She drops her shoes and phone to the floor and runs for the door, swinging it open to reveal Jon in a suit, another thing he hated, any time he could push the NHL limits and not wear the full suit he did, but he also knew Addison loved him in a suit so there he stood. “Jon” she says quietly a tear trying to escape she steps into him her head landing on his chest as he wraps her tightly in his arms, she can hear his heart pounding a mile a minute in her ear “Well say something” she says quietly wiping away a tear before he can notice “I don’t want a divorce” he says so low she almost misses it, she opens her mouth to say something and he stops her “Adz just listen to me please ok.” At the use of her old nickname she closes her moth and just nods knowing her voice would fail her “I know somewhere we got messed up and it’s probably my fault, and I don’t care. I can’t sign those divorce papers because I don’t want to divorce you. I thought I could it, I thought since I’d failed you who knows how many times that this time I could do exactly what you wanted, whatever you asked. I just wanted to make you happy Addie. But I can’t do that, I can’t let you walk away and not tell you that I love you, not tell you that the only reason I was sleeping in the guest room was because I knew you needed your sleep with Sam’s odd schedules and I always manage to wake you up when I get into bed. I had to tell you that I don’t care how many times we fight I’d rather fight with you than lose you. That most days I wonder why you ever married me because I’m an idiot, that I’m sorry I held you back from teaching, that I think you’re the greatest mother in the world. Addie, please” he says his voice sounding frantic dropping lower again “Please”

She wipes her eyes “Why didn’t you say that months ago” she says quietly and he shrugs “I didn’t know how” he mumbles and she laughs through her tears “I don’t want a divorce either, I thought it was what you wanted” he grabs her by the waist pulling her in tight and kissing her slowly “I love you, so much” he mumbles running his hands through her hair “I love you too, happy anniversary Jonny” she says with a cheeky smile “Happy anniversary baby”
