Fate Has A Way

Chapter 4

Man I was exhausted, the whole day was exhausting. With everything that I had heard this morning, to the movers showing up, to meeting Patrik Elias's wife Petra, to having Ally bringing me back home. Had left me emotionally and psychically drained. I had just got Avalon settled down in her new room for the night, and now sat on a couch in the living room facing the large window. The night was clear so through the glass I could clearly see the stars. I took a sip from the glass of wine I had in my hand.

Ally hadn't said much when she had brought Avalon and I back to our house. But I could tell her and Travis were still fighting or had gotten into other fight. Even Avalon had mentioned how "Uncle Travis had yelled at Auntie Ally again" when he had got home from practice. I felt bad that Avalon had to see that. Whenever Ryan and I argued we never did it around Ava, I didn't want her to witness grown-ups fighting. I hadn't even realized Avalon had known Travis and Ally had been fighting earlier, until she said "again". But I felt worse for Ally and whatever trouble I had caused for them.

I looked down at my cell phone laying on the coffee table, I picked it up and pushed it so it would light up. I'm not sure what I had expected when it lit up but of course there was nothing on the screen. No missed calls or text messages. I was hoping maybe by some stroke of luck it was on vibrate and maybe Ryan had tried to get ahold of me. But luck didn't seem to be on my side, you would think he would at least make sure everything went ok today. I tossed my phone back on the table in disgust. Finishing my glass of wine, I got off the couch and stretched. Than headed towards my new room, turning off lights as I went.

As my head hit my pillow all I could think was 'Tomarrow is a new and big day. Who knows what tomarrow will bring' little did I realize how true that statement would be as I fell asleep.

The next morning I woke up to the absolute bliss of silence, which worried me slightly with Avalon. Usually she would be up by now and either snuggled up to me or jumping on my bed trying to wake me. I untangled my legs from the sheets and got out of bed, than padded my way down the hallway to Ava's room. The door to her room was cracked open and I could hear the sounds from her TV, pushing the door open and looking in. Avalon was sitting in front of her Tv watching Scooby-Doo with her stuffed Scooby-Doo animal.

"Morning sweetheart," I said, walking over and ruffling the top of her head.

"Morning momma," she replied, not taking her eyes off the TV.

"So we get to go see where you might go to school this morning," I told her.

"Really?" she asked excitedly, finally taking her eyes off the TV and looking at me.

The smile on her face and excitement in her eyes made me smile with her. I loved the fact at five she loved school already and got excited about going. Even if it was only kindergarten. Ava was a fast learner and had potential for a bright future.

"Yeah really," I answered.

"Ok I'm ready. Let's go," she responded, hopping up from the floor in her pink princess pajamas and bedhead.

"Hold up there sparky. First it's not time to go yet. Second you and I both need to get ready, we can't go in our pajamas. Third we need to get something eat, so we don't go there hungry. After we do all that, than we'll go to see the school. Ok?" I said.

Ava stood there pursing her little lips and contemplating her options.

"Avalon deal?" I asked.

"Yes momma," she replied, some of the excitement slipping from her voice.

"Alright well finish watching your cartoons. I'm going to take a shower and get ready, than we'll get you ready," I said, kissing the top of her head.

Shaking my head and chuckling silently to myself that she had already sat back down and immersed herself in Scooby-Doo. I walked out of her room and headed back to my room, walking into my bathroom and turning on my shower. I held my hand under the stream of water until it got to the right temperature, I stripped out of my clothes and stepped in. I quickly washed off and washed my hair. When I was done I wrapped towels around my body and hair.

Going over to my closet I stood there debating on my options. I knew I needed to pick out something nice since we were going to a private school. I finally decided on a pair of black slacks and a blue button down shirt, that had sleeves that came to my elbows. Than since it was to cool yet I picked out a pair of wedge sandles to wear. After grabbing everything I went back in the bathroom and got ready. In the end I ended up throwing my hair up in a twist, securing it with a hair clip and light makeup. Slipping on my sandles I made my way back to Avalon's room, where she was still watching Scooby.

I picked out Ava's nicest pair of blue jeans, which were light blue jeans with a flower pattern going up the legs and a matching shirt in pink. That had the same flower pattern on the arms of the shirt. Than a pair of pink tennis shoes. After she got dressed we went over to her bathroom and I grabbed a water bottle and sprayed her hair with water and brushed through it. I put her hair up in matching pigtails.

After finishing getting ready Ava and I headed downstairs. Realizing that there was no real food in the house yet and mentally making a note to go grocery shopping. I figured it would be alright to get fast food for breakfast. I opened the back door of my custom midnight blue Tahoe and let Ava hop into her seat and buckle in. Walking around around getting in the drivers seat and starting it, I pulled off to the closest McDonalds.

Pulling up in front of The Gray Charter School you wouldn't have figured it for a school. From the outside it didn't look like a school. That was one of the things that had been most appealing to me.

"Momma where are we? I thought we were going to my new school," Avalon asked from the back.

"We are hunny and it's right there," I said, pointing out the window.

Turning off my Tahoe and grabbing my keys and getting out. I walked around grabbed Ava and closed her door. Than pushed the button on my key ring to set the alarm. I set Avalon on her feet and grabbed her hand and crossed the street. Walking into the school for some reason I became extremely nervous. I wasn't sure why though, I had no reason to be nervous.

"Ewwwww mommy your hands are all wet," Avalon whined scrunching her nose up, and pulled her hand from mine. Than wiped her hands on her pants.

I wiped my own hands on the side of my pants and than walked into the office with Ava. Behind the desk was an older woman, she looked the grandmotherly type. But was still dressed in a nice designer suit. She looked up at me and smiled.

"May I help you dear?" the woman asked.

"Uh...... Uh y-yes.... I-I have an appointment scheduled," I responded, giving myself a mental slap for sounding idiotic.

"What's your name dear?" the woman smiled.

"Maddison James," I replied.

"Ok dear. Just have a seat and someone will be here in a minute to help you," she replied, still smiling.

Avalon and I sat down in two of the comfy chairs in the reception area. It seemed like twenty minutes later a woman finally came out and stood in front of me. I looked at the woman, who had to be in her late forties, with dark brown hair in a tight bun. And once in a nice designer suit. I was starting to think I may have to go shopping for new clothes with how people were dressed up here.
The woman looked me over and didn't seem to like my appearance. I was starting to become self-conscience with the way she was looking at me.

"Mrs. James?" she asked.

"Uh yes, but it's Ms. James not Mrs," I replied.

"Right well I'm Mrs. Jones the assistant principal here at Gray Charter," Mrs. Jones said, without a smile or hand shake.

"Nice to meet you," I replied kindly.

I had been taught as a child no matter what to always be kind and polite no matter how the other person acted.

"This is Avalon," I said, motioning to my daughter.

"Right, well follow me this way," Mrs. Jones said, taking a few steps than stopping and looking at me. "I'll show you around the school first and than we'll discuss having your daughter enrolled."

"Aright. Come on Ava," I said, standing up and grabbing Ava's hand.

We followed Mrs. Jones out into the hallway, which was not to much but a little more crowded than before. Obviously as the school was not that large there weren't that many kids. But at that point there were enough kids and parents, that I pulled Avalon closer to my side. Mrs. Jones showed us where the lunch room, music rooms, gym, computer lab, and library were on the lower level.

"The Gray Charter School goes from kindergarten to eighth grade. We have two classrooms for each grade. There are twenty kids in each class," Mrs. Jones said, turning down a hallway.

"This is the kindergarten, first, and second grade hallway. If you decide and your daughter gets accepted here, this will be your daughters classroom." Mrs. Jones said, stopping in front of a door.

"Momma, momma can I go in?" Ava asked excitedly, pulling on my hand.

"Uh I don't know sweetie," I replied, looking down at her than at Mrs. Jones.

"We can ask Mrs. Wells," Mrs. Jones answered, knocking on the doorframe of the room.

A few minutes later a petite aburn haired woman came to the door smiling. The woman looked to be around my age.

"Mrs. Wells this is Ms. James and her daughter. Ms. James is looking for her daughter to come here. If she does she'll joining your class," Mrs. Jones introduced us.

"Hi I'm Kelly," Kelly smiled, holding out her hand.

"Maddison," I replied, shaking her hand.

"And who might you be?" Kelly asked, squatting down to Ava's level.

"Avalon James," Ava said quietly, suddenly becoming shy and hiding behind my legs.

"Ava don't be shy," I said laughing.

"Well Ava. Can I call you Ava?" Kelly asked, which Ava nodded. "You know you look exactly like another little girl in my class. And I bet you like to draw just like her."

"Can I mommy?" Ava asked, with wide eyes.

"Ummmmm," I said, unsure.

"I think that's an excellent idea, that way Ms. James you and I can go talk." Mrs. Jones answered.

"Well I guess than its ok Ava. Mommy will be back in a while," I said to Ava, as she was already half way across the classroom.

I watched as Kelly walked over to Avalon and put some art supplies out on the table for her. I turned to follow Mrs. Jones back to the office. I slammed into a soft but solid surface, even with my wedge sandles my eye sight was only to the persons chest.
