“Now, this is familiar,” the villain remarked. “Only last time, I believe it was something a little like this…” He swooped down and grabbed Patrick, knocking his stick from his hands. He wrapped an arm around the blond’s neck. Then he lifted the stick back up to his hand and held it to Patrick’s neck. “Better…”

“Showtime!” Evelyn gasped.

“Patrick!” Jonathan gasped.

“Huh, whadoya know, I can still capture the little blondie! This time, though, I have kinetikinesis number one and number two you all possess different powers too...oh and most importantly, number three I’ll defeat you this time. Remember what you said Black Hawk or Zvezda, you told me, ‘Hey Red Wing, maybe don’t make things so easy for me!’ Well, your wish is granted.”

Evelyn shot a look at Jonathan, who was clenching a fist at his side. If he got any angrier, he’d transform into his hawk form. And Evelyn could tell that Red Wing was provoking him.

“Red Wing, let him go,” Jonathan hissed, narrowing his eyes and clenching his other fist now.

“Such a pretty blondie….” the villain remarked, pinching Patrick’s cheeks together. “I still can’t believe that you both are madly in love with one another and gay.”

“Let go of me!” Patrick grunted and kicked at Red Wing, who smirked and cackled.

Jonathan raised his arms up and crossed them in an “x” form in front of his chest.

“Don’t struggle sweetie, you’re only feeding my power,” Red Wing mused.

“AND YOU’RE FEEDING MINE!!” Jonathan threw his hands down to his sides, sharply and then snapped his head up, letting out a loud, angry hawk screech. He instantly morphed into a black hawk creature and sent a focused stream of fire at the villain, who shoved Patrick to the ground finally.

Red Wing used Patrick’s stick to block the fireball and leapt to the side, unharmed. Patrick screamed as Jonathan’s stream of fire singed his shoulder. He snatched his stick, which was luckily impenetrable and had absorbed Jonathan’s pyric exhalation (or fire breath). He watched as Jonathan flew at the villain, continuing to pelt him with his fire breath.

“There’s the black hawk!!” Red Wing joyously exclaimed as he darted about in the air. “Now the party can begin!”

Jonathan gave chase.

Meanwhile, Evelyn dropped down to Patrick. “You okay, Showtime?”

“Yeah. Physically, but mentally--” He glanced at his burned shoulder. “It’s not like I have Wolverine’s healing ability.”

“Jonny didn’t mean it, Patrick. You know how he gets when he’s really angry.”

“Yeah, but still, he knows not to hurt me.”

“It’ll be okay. Come on, let’s get the archers. The others can handle the robots and you need a break.” Zvezda grabbed Patrick by the hand.

The blond Blackhawk winger gripped tighter onto the handle of his stick and followed the heroine to where the two were trapped. Patrick poked the shield encompassing the platform and stepped back as it sparked and shot out beams of light at them. “How are we gonna deactivate that thing?” Patrick asked.

“I don’t know. I can try to channel enough of my cosmic energy and see if I can break it. But you may want to stand back,” Zvezda explained.

Patrick nodded and backed away. Zvezda faced the orb of energy and raised up her hands, pointing them at the force-field. Then she anchored herself to the ground and took a deep breath. She began to shoot her cosmic plasma energy at it and continued to feed and strengthen the power.

Patrick shielded his eyes as the orb glowed a brighter color, before exploding. He lowered his arm and a blinked. “You did it!”

Zvezda dropped her hands and darted onto the platform. She went to Val first. Patrick took Nikita. Zvezda lowered the bandana from Val’s mouth, while Patrick did the same with Nikita. Then she shot one of her exploding star objects at the chain anchoring the archer to the platform. It broke apart and she worked on the chains holding his wrists together now.

“Zvezda!” Val gasped. “Спасибо. (Thank you.)”

“В любое время, Arrow Hawk. Вы знаете, что. (Anytime Arrow Hawk. You know that.)”

“I do.”

After being unable to get the chains off of his wrists, Zvezda placed her hands on top and blasted them off with her energy. She ran to help Patrick out, who was attempting to use his stick to slice the chains.

“You’re not strong enough yet, Showtime. Allow me?” Evelyn repeated the process she’d done for Val, minus the wasting time pulling at the wrist chains. With Val and Nikita free, she returned to Val, who’d picked up his quiver and bow and had readied an arrow in the bow’s string.

“I can shoot metal human?” Val asked, grinning.

“Go ahead, Arrow Hawk, sweetie!” Evelyn laughed.

Val raised his bow up and took aim at one of the robots, who had grabbed Tyler’s arm. He narrowed his eyes and let the arrow fly. It zoomed straight at the robot and sent him exploding off of Tyler, who jumped away unharmed. He kicked another robot in the head, before landing on the ground. He snapped his head up, wearing a huge smile.

“Nice shot Arrow Hawk!” Tyler shouted, getting back to his feet and punching another robot down.

Val lowered his bow and turned back to Evelyn. “I shoot robot, help Tyler.”

“You helped Scorpion,” Evelyn corrected.

“Yeah,” Val looked past the heroine to his fellow archer, who had his bow and quiver of arrows too. Patrick stood beside him, unsure about what to do. “Sabrebow, ты в порядке? (Are you okay?)”

“Да. (Yeah.)”

“Давайте закончим этот бой тогда! (Let's end this fight then!)” Val exclaimed, pulling another arrow from his quiver.

“Правильно! (Right!)” Nikita copied his friend and they bolted off the platform.

Zvezda nodded to Patrick, who darted off, swinging his stick around once more. The heroine took to the skies, looking for Jonathan and Red Wing. She didn’t see them. At first. Then a ball of fire ignited in the sky and the furious Captain of the Blackhawks flew over the top of a building, still after the villain.

Knowing that the black hawk wouldn’t last much longer with his fury, she zoomed to help him out. As she flew, she whipped up a cosmic ball of energy and shot it at Red Wing. It hit him square in the chest and he screeched in shock. He tumbled to the ground, where John Tavares happened to be.

“Portal, get Red Wing!” Zvezda yelled out.

John glanced up and spotted the falling villain. He caught him in his arms and teleported away from the scene to an unknown place. Zvezda breathed a sigh of relief and turned back to Jonathan. Just then, the black hawk fainted in mid-air and crashed to the ground, morphing back into his human hero form.

Evelyn landed on the ground and hovered over him. “Jonny! Hey, Captain Blackhawk!” she screamed. “You okay?”

“I’m fine, Eve, just weak...that’s what the fury does to me. I’m able to last longer and control the anger, but it only lasts so long still…” Jonathan whispered. “Gosh that hurts every time!” He moaned as he pushed himself up.

“You know you hurt Patrick, right?” Evelyn stated.

Jonathan shook his head and looked to the blond, spotting the singed shoulder wound immediately. “Oh, I said I’d never hurt him...and yet I did! Is he mad at me?”

“No, but you should go apologize to him.” She bent down and took his hand into hers and helped him up to his feet.

“Right, right. Thanks Zvezda. Did you get Arrow Hawk and Sabrebow free?”

“I did, but go apologize to your boyfriend!” Zvezda remarked, shoving Jonathan toward Patrick.

“Alright, alright.” Jonathan brushed himself off and walked to Patrick. He surprised the blond by wrapped his arms around him from behind. He wasn’t even scared by the stick twirling and managed to not get himself whacked in the face.

“Jonny! Oh dammit, you scared me! Don’t do that!” Patrick screamed, dropping the stick in fright but relaxing after he realized who it was wrapped around him. “During a battle, I can take your head off! It’s dangerous sneaking up on me like that!”

Jonathan let him go and the blond turned to him, his blue eyes sparking. “I’m sorry I hurt you baby. I didn’t mean it. I was, you know…”

Patrick grabbed Jonathan’s face with his hands and pressed his lips to the Captain’s. “Don’t speak Jonny, I forgive you.” Jonathan relaxed now and let Patrick kiss him.

Zvezda shook her head and smiled at them. “Get a room Kazer!” She zoomed off to join Val and Nikita, who were leaping and tumbling over cars and striking down all the robots in their way.

A good fifteen minutes later, the robots were finally defeated. John and Red Wing were still missing but the successful heroes gathered together by the platform. Val and Nikita high-fived one another and slapped an annoyed-looking Vlad on the back. Evelyn elbowed Val and scolded him. Tyler and Jamie watched them, amused. Gabriel stood flexing and playing around with his ice powers on the palm of his hand. Patrick and Jonathan were still batting their eyelashes at one another.

“Good work heroes, and a huge thanks to Iceshot and Chaos for coming. Where’s Portal though?” Zvezda instructed as the leader of the team.

“He vanished with Red Wing--” Jonathan began to say before a loud scream echoed toward them.

Suddenly John appeared by the group. Red Wing wasn’t with him.

“Portal, where’s Red Wing?” Zvezda demanded.

“Lost him. He slipped from my grasp as I was teleporting. I tried to get back here as soon as possible. I’m sorry.” John dipped his head.

Evelyn stepped over to him and patted his shoulder. “It’s okay, at least you helped Captain Blackhawk out.”

“Yeah, thanks Portal. I was starting to feel exhausted from all the fury I felt,” Jonathan said, combing Patrick’s curly blond locks with his hand. “I owe ya one, buddy.”

John nodded. “Also, I ran into another guy…”

“Who?” Evelyn asked.

Before the Islander could respond, a deep, familiar voice replied with, “Me.”

Evelyn turned to look at the platform and spotted someone who resembled a doppelganger of Mister Sinister. He had a red glowing diamond shape mark in the middle of his forehead. He was in all black and red and it was like the NHL had produced a villain prototype for the Blackhawk. Out of his tight-fitting black vest’s sleeves, he had a pair of midnight black wings.

“Eric Strum?” Evelyn questioned, instinctively balling her fingers up to the sides of her.

“More like a reincarnated Thomas Vanek,” Jonathan growled, curling one of his wings around Patrick, who shoved it away and gave his boyfriend a glare. The blond raised his hockey stick up at ready.

“Jonny Boy’s got it. I’m Vanek, but I had to take on Strum’s appearence. I think I like it, it’s much more...me. I was always just known as the “brains” guy of the Legend of Doom, but this new look makes me look like so much more! Now I’m a leader...and I’m going to end the NHL once and for all.”

“Like hell you are!” Vlad snapped.

“Oh look another blondie...and a Russian no less. You should calm down, Chaos,” Vanek sneered, putting his finger to his head.

Vlad relaxed and dropped his head.

“Good boy, Chaos.” Vanek smirked and dropped his arm.

“How did you escape the pit?” Zvezda inquired. “You were trapped under the rink…”

The villain faced her, looking calm and casual. He was unafraid and a little cocky. “Well actually, I was the only one to escape. When the rink closed up, I used my ice powers - kinda like Iceshot there - to get out and escape. I made it seem like I was dead. But I hide in the bench and let you all think you’d won. But I walked out and took on a disguise. Meanwhile, I plotted my revenge and came across Justin Abdelkader and Derek Dorsett, two willing subjects to help me out. We were able to meet up...and we gained powers. I took on Strum’s identity, including his powers and appearance. So, I don’t have my ice powers anymore...but I’m much stronger.”

“I can see that you have the telepathy,” Patrick snarled.

“And you appear to have changed as well...my how different you are now Patrick Kane, much braver and feistier.” Vanek glowered at the blond, who raised his stick up as a response. Lower your hockey stick, Kanerboo. You can’t hurt me. I have power over you. Patrick lowered the stick, blinking. Vanek grinned. “It’s not just telepathy I have, as you might remember, I also now possess telekinesis and can teleport, just like Portal there. How traumatized are you from our little run-in, Tavy?”

John frowned at the villain. Evelyn was shocked. How had he been able to get Strum’s powers. There was something he wasn’t telling them. And it wasn’t exactly good.

Vanek had become a copy of Eric Strum, a genetically altered human with superhuman physical and mental abilities. He had the ability of flight as well as telepathy, which he was able to use to manipulate the minds of others in various ways and was capable of energy projection through telekinesis. Strum could also exhibit the ability to teleport. And as he was already developed and strengthened with his powers, he learned that he could regenerate and be virtually immune to injuries, which helped him to remain quite immortal (he had a form of Injury Immunity).

Vanek had been crafty and shifty and similar to the Riddler. He was never known for possessing any spectacular powers, however he was extremely smart with plans and creating strategies. Though he did manage to possess one power: the power of ice through cryokinesis. He could freeze people, like he’d been able to freeze Kaleta in place during the great battle in Russia (when Jonny had first gotten his powers), but unfortunately his power did not work on the heroes. He was regularly used for plans and schemes instead.

Sure he’d always longed to be more than just the guy with the “brains”, he wanted to be apart of the plan. He wanted more action, craved it, wanted to try out his ice powers and not just be the brains behind the operations. But Vanek had been called on to handle Black Hawk and look into her, while Strum helped out. He was promised that if he worked hard, he’s be rewarded the chance to be a part of his own plan. And that was enough for him.

But now...now he was just as he had said, more powerful. And he’d apparently recruited Justin Abdelkader to be Red Wing and Derek Dorsett to be Canuck.

“Why did you capture Val and Nikita?” Evelyn spat.

Vanek faced her. “That was all Canuck’s doing. And Red Wing sent the robots. Did you have fun?”

“That’s not an answer!” Evelyn growled.

“Careful sweetheart, if you tempt me enough, I can always make you regret it.”

“Try taking on all of us then. You may be powerful, but you were never smart and you still aren’t. You’re not the brains, you’re pathetic!”

“So, you’re going to tempt me, huh?”

“Hockey Avengers, now! Attack!” Zvezda yelled.

Vanek smirked as Jamie and Vlad blasted their energy at the villain, while Gabriel shot ice at him. Evelyn joined them by blasting him with her cosmic energy. Tyler whipped his guns out and began shooting at him. Jonathan blew fire at him, once again fueled by his anger (but it was controlled enough that he didn’t transform). Val and Nikita shot arrows at him and Patrick raised his stick up, with John standing at his side.

They stopped and saw that Vanek was still standing there, cackling. “Good try. There’s something you forgot though...I can heal!” With that he brought his arms up at his sides and used his telekinesis powers. He lifted up robot and car and street debris and then flicked his hand inward so that they flew at the heroes.

John moved quickly and was able to teleport everyone to safety. They reappeared in the parking lot of the United Center.

“Thanks, Portal!” Zvezda gasped.

You can run...and you can teleport...but you cannot hide. And you know it! Vanek’s voice rang in each of their heads. You may have won and gotten away this time, but this battle isn’t over.

They all shared looks with other another. Sure Zvezda, Jonathan, Patrick and Val had defeated Strum, but this was Vanek...and Vanek was like a Strum 10.0. What were they going to do? How were they possibly going to take down Vanek now?

To be continued...
