Prove Me Wrong.

Picking Up the Pieces.

'Kieran's POV'

Waking up the next morning I felt like everything was back to normal, but it really wasn’t. Sure we were speaking, and we definitely weren't breaking up but now was the hard part, picking up the pieces. When I rolled over I expected to see Jamie's body lying next to mine but the large bed was empty and I had no clue where he was.

Climbing out of bed I stretched as I walked into the bathroom, laughing at my outfit as I went, a combination of Jamie's clothes and a pair of Seahawks shorts I had left at his house, his socks went all the way to my kneecap. Making my way downstairs I got a whiff of food, I found him in the kitchen his back turned to me standing over the stove. A tight white t-shirt and black shorts were hugging his hips, that's a sight every girl wants to wake up to.

Sneaking up behind him I snaked my arms around his waist resting my chin on his shoulder, "Morning," I whispered. His hands grabbed mine, "You weren't supposed to wake up," he said with a fake pout, I smiled and kissed his cheek, "Sorry, the bed was cold." Unwrapping my arms from Jamie's torso I grabbed a mug and poured myself a cup of coffee and sat on the counter watching as Jamie flipped pancakes. When he was done he slid a plate over to me, "You sitting up there or are you going to join me?" I rolled my eyes and hopped down, following him to the kitchen table with my mug and plate.

We ate in silence, the only sound filling the air was our forks stabbing at our plates. Too full to finish my huge stack I looked across the table at Jamie who was eating with one hand and scrolling on his phone with the other. I watched him as I pulled my knees up into the chair, he caught me staring at him, "Nice socks," Shaking my head I grabbed my plate from the table scraping the rest of the pancakes into the trash, Jamie followed leaning against the counter as I loaded the dishwasher. I finished and stood across from him, fiddling with the hem of my shirt "So, we should Uhh.." He nodded, not even needing me to finish we both knew that we needed to talk this all out.

Following Jamie into the living room we sat facing each other on the couch, my legs crossed Indian style I stared at him. I didn’t really know how to start, so I started with just that. "I don't know where to start, Jamie I love you and I want to be with you but.." I watched as he rubbed his face and eyes, "But, I hurt you and now you're even more afraid of loving me. I get it Kier, and God if I could take it all back I would. I love you so much, and I feel like an idiot and I am so sorry." Maybe he did understand after all.

"I know you didn't mean it Jamie, you're not Ryan. But it did hurt, and we can't just keep hurting each other. If this is going to work your career can't be above mine all the time." That's something no athlete is used to hearing, but he nodded along. "I know, babe your job is amazing, and important and it means so much to you I promise I'll never.." There it was again. That one little word, "promise" ruined his whole entire spiel. I swallowed hard before speaking, "How about no promises for right now Jamie, we'll just be there for each other as much as possible. Nobody gets hurt if there's nothing to break." His face sank as I finished my sentence, sliding closer to me he reached out resting one hand on my face. "Okay.. No promises, but I swear to God Kieran that I love you and I will never act like Ryan again. You're it for me, and I can't lose you ever again."

I was lost in the trance of Jamie's dark eyes, his words hitting me like a freight train "It for me." Holy shit. I was so dazed that I didn’t even feel myself start crying, the water dripped from my eyes and fell onto my leg. Before I could wipe my eyes Jamie's thumbs were swiping under my eyes, "I, I uh, Jamie, God I love you. I can't put those walls back up. Please, let's never do this again." His arms were around me pulling my body into his, "Never again," I could hear him say as he kissed my forehead tangling his fingers my hair.

We laid there on the couch for a while, I was just listening to his heart beating beneath me and I actually thought he was asleep until his phone vibrated in the pocket of his shorts. The movement caused me to shift as he reached in and pulled out the iPhone, a smile on his face as he read the text. "Guess what?" he asked and I looked up leaning on my elbow, "What?" I asked, intrigued as to what had him all smiley. "We officially have a puppy!" My eyes widened, "NO WAY!" I squeaked sitting up quickly a knee on either side of his body, "When can we go see him!?" Jamie laughed at my childish excitement, "He says we can come pick ours on Wednesday, they were just born this morning." Holy cow, we were really doing this! "Yes!! Oh my gosh, we have to pick a name Jamie!!"

After hours of Google-ing and making up names we had a long list of dog names in front of us. They ranged from hockey players and terms to Texas slang, and movie characters. We both had a favorite, and could not agree on whose name was the best. Jamie wanted to name the poor dog Rocky after his old junior team the Rockets, but I was in love with the name Knox. It was cute and still manly just like the breed, tough looking like a husky but tiny and adorable like a Pomeranian. We decided that after we chose the dog from the litter the name would be easier to decide, if he was too tiny Rocky wouldn’t suit him. I couldn’t wait to pick out our little guy, after all he was going to have to replace his daddy for a couple months.

Speaking of Canada, Jamie and I talked about his summer plans. Following the end of their playoff run Jamie and Jordie would be off to Canada, for the first month I would also be in Ireland. When I returned in June I would be picking up the puppy and spending the time alone, Jamie would be back to spend the 4th of July with me and my family for our annual lake party. The rest of our schedule will depend on my job situation which will be decided after I find out if I passed my boards, no matter I planned to take at least one trip to Canada to see the Benn family. Everything seemed to be falling back into place, this was just a bump in the road to forever.
