You're My Favorite Mistake

Chapter Six-

Allison's POV:

I sipped my coffee patiently as I waited for James to meet me. He had agreed to meet me at a coffee shop after his doctor's appointment. I had told Max that I was going to Pittsburgh to go to the mall with Vero and Melanie. I didn't like lying to him, but I knew he wouldn't understand why I needed to speak to James.

The bell on the door rang and I looked up to see James walking in, looking as sexy as ever in a tight gray t-shirt with a dark blue Pens' jacket and jeans. His hair was perfect as usual and his scruffy facial hair just added to the package. He gave me a small half smile as he sat across from me, ordering a coffee. "Hey." he said softly.

"Hi." I said back "How was the appointment?" I asked

"I had to reschedule it for later this afternoon. My doctor had an emergency to deal with. I'll be going after we're done here." he replied

"Oh...if you don't mind me asking...what's it for?"

"To see how much longer I have to wear this stupid cast and to check my healing process."

"How did it happen?" I asked, trying to keep the subject away from 'us' for a bit longer

"I was clearing the puck for a line change and I skated towards the boards when Brad Marchand checked me. I guess my wrist was in a bad place because it made this cracking sound and I almost blacked out from the pain. Kuni had to help me off the ice and when I got back to the bench, my wrist was facing the oppostie way. I'm surprised you didn't hear about it...it was a completely illegal hit since I hadn't had possession of the puck for a while...Marchand got three games for it." he replied

I winced, "Ouch...I guess I just missed hearing about it..."

"I know my wrist isn't the reason you wanted to meet. I'm assuming you got my text message and you want to talk?"

I nodded, "Yeah..."

"What happened with us, Allison? I mean I know we had fallen apart, but was there something else? Did I do something wrong?" he asked looking up at me

I sighed, "Honestly? No. You really didn't do anything wrong. It was me. Things just kind of fell apart and then I met Maxime..."

"And you fell in love with him?"

I nodded, "And I acted so childish afterwards. You had every right to not want to be friends."

"Do you hate me, Allison?"

"No. I think that maybe I did at first...because I was just so stubborn and angry that you just wanted to shut me out. I don't hate you, James."

James nodded, "I understand. I was at fault too. I shouldn't have got involved with you knowing I still had feelings for Jennifer."

"How is she by the way?" I asked, changing the subject

"She's good. She and Nolan are living with me now." he replied

"How is Nolan?"

His face lit up and he smiled, "He's amazing! He's getting so big. He'll be two soon. Here I have a picture. We got these taken last month." he said pulling a photo from his wallet and handing it to me. Nolan looked just like him. They had the same hair, same eyes...same smile.

"He's adorable, James." I said handing the picture back to him

"Thank-you." he replied with a smile

I smiled back and looked at the time, "Oh shit...I should get going. I have to meet up with Melanie. It was good seeing you again, James...we should talk again."

He nodded, "Sounds good. Bye, Allison."

I waved and headed out to my car, driving to Melanie's.

James' POV:

I sighed as I pulled my car into the parking lot at the hospital. It was good seeing Allison again, but I was so confused on where we stood. Part of me didn't want to leave the coffee shop. I wanted to continue talking to her...I felt like I could've talked with her all day...

I looked down at my phone seeing I had three missed calls from Jen. "Fuck..." I mumbled, texting her back saying that my appointment got delayed and that I had took Vero home and stayed at Flower's until I had to go back to the doctor's. Which was partially true. I had taken her home.

Vero was the only person who knew I'd be with Allison. She said she'd cover for me if Jen called her. Vero would tell her I was in the bathroom if she called and I had texted her when I left the coffee shop so she could say I had went to my appointment. Luckily for me, Jen hadn't called Flower's house at all.

"James, the doctor will see you now." the nurse said with a smile. I stood up and shut my phone off as I followed her back to the room.

A few minutes later, the doctor came in, looked over my charts and sat down, "Well, I have some good news and some bad news." he started. A lump rose in my throat as he continued, "Good news is we can get your cast off next week and then you'll just have to wear a wrist brace."

"What's the bad news?" I asked, my heart racing

"The bad news is...well your wrist was broken in a difficult place and the healing process and physical therapy will take a lot of time..."

"What are you saying..."

"Your wrist will not be healed in time for you to play this season."

My heart dropped and everything went blank...his words hit me slowly. I'd be out for the rest of the season.
