Long Way Home

History

Holly POV

I managed to get Tyler to get some real sleep on the couch after promising him I would watch over her. As I sat there I couldn’t help but wonder how many times Jamie stayed up to watch over me. If he was ever as scared as I am now.
Almost two years ago, right at the beginning of the season I found out I was pregnant. We had been trying for almost a year with no success, when the time came I couldn’t believe it was finally happening. I still remember the day the test came back positive, Jamie was out of town for a game and I knew he wouldn’t answer his phone but I called anyways. I called over and over again to the point that when Jamie finally answered his phone he was in full panic mode. When I managed to tell him the news he could barely contain his excitement. I can still remember hearing the whole team cheering behind him.
Jamie and me delved into parenthood without hesitation, I bought all the books and Jamie started to come home after games more. Our party days were over and we were ready.
Six months later I would have what the doctors would tell me is called a late miscarriage. I blamed everyone when it happened, I blamed myself, I blamed Jamie, I blamed the universe. Jamie had hockey to help pull him through it but I was stuck in the deep end. Jamie tried everything he could do to help but I wasn’t having any of it. I remember being so sure that he was going to leave me, I wouldn’t have blamed him thought I was an empty shell.

Looking back at Sara I become mad at myself for not seeing something in her earlier, for not pushing her to come clean to me. It was so weird to be in this position with my best friend, I used to know her so well and now I felt like I didn't know her at all.

Sara POV

I woke up knowing I had fucked up. I couldn’t remember much from last night, flashes of a yelling Tyler and Holly came flooding back. I knew someone was sitting in my room with me and I don’t know why but I really hoped it was Tyler. I turned over to see Sara sitting in the armchair in the corner of my room. She was asleep in yoga pants and what I assumed was Jamie’s hoodie. It was about 5 in the morning the sunlight came into my room from a little crack in the blinds. In this vulnerable state I could see that the last couple of years had taken a toll on Holly. She must have sensed me staring at her because she slowly woke up.
“Morning” she whispered moving so that her legs were folded in front of her, her chin resting on her knees.
“Hi” I manage to croak out, my throat is so dry.
“There’s a bottle of water and some Tylanol on the bedside table” she says and I go to take them quickly.
“Hols” I go to say but she cuts me off quickly.
“No Sara, you're not gonna Hols me. I should have seen it from the first day. You have to talk to someone, you have to get help either from me or from whoever I don’t care” she said tears streaming down her face “ I can’t lose you” she said in almost a sob.
“Sara I’m okay I just drank to much last night” I said trying hopelessly to fix what I had done.
“Don’t lie to me, you were never good at it, “ she said while shaking her head.
“You can’t understand” I said letting tears fall from my face, this was all getting to be too much.
“I never had trouble understand you before, what would be different now” she said moving over to the bed so that she was sitting in front of me.
“I lost everything,” I told her and my heart broke all over again. I had to tell her and to tell her would be to relive it. I wasn’t sure if I could do that again. Dance had been my life since I was able to stand, I lived, breathed, and slept dance. I worked so hard to get my name out there and after many years I finally got some contracts. I was never home, I was in the middle of a two year touring contract when I came home for Jamie and Holly's wedding, leaving the day after. By the time the contract ended Holly had moved away and I decided to start a solid life back home in Montreal. I opened a dance school and everything was going well until my accident. I don't remember much, just the sounds of the car's tires screeching and then darkness. I had messed up my knee and my back pretty badly, the doctor said I would never dance again. The medicine they gave me was the only thing that kept me going, until now. I had come to Dallas with only a couple left and took the last one last night.
I looked at Holly and she didn't say anything, she was just processing everything I had said.
"I'm sorry Sa, why didn't you tell me" she said wiping her tears.
"You were here I didn't want to bother you. You have a life here" I said as she pulled me into a hug.
"You're my best friend, you'll always be part of my life" she answered. I was about to respond when I heard a knock at the door. Tyler walked in a couple seconds later and looked at both of us.
"I'll go" he said backing out.
"No stay" I answered to which Holly gave me a look.
"You said I needed to talk to someone" I whispered to Holly. She nodded and gave Ty's arm a squeeze on the way out. Was I actually going to do this?
