When I Close My Eyes

Chap 3.

A few days went by and Karly was all settled into her new home. Jasper and Nikki came by every once and a while to hang out since Karly didn't have any friends. On a sunny Friday morning Karly got up early and went out for a jog. Running always seemed to clear her head. With Taylor Swift blaring from her iPod, she was in her own world. She stopped to catch her breath when all of a sudden she got knocked to the ground. Her ear buds came out and she just sat on the floor in shock. "Oh my gosh...I'm so sorry." a male voice said "I wasn't paying attention and I...I'm so sorry."

"It's OK." Karly said grabbing her iPod and standing up. She turned around to face the guy who just ran into her. He kind of looked familiar, but she couldn't really place his face. He had brown curly hair and the most beautiful eyes she had ever seen. He had an accent that indicated he wasn't from Pennsylvania. He was absolutely gorgeous.

"Are you alright?" he asked giving her a questioning look

Karly snapped out of her thoughts "Yeah yeah I'm fine. I'm Karly by the way."

"Uh...I'm Sidney." he said "Are you sure you're OK...I mean I ran into you..."

Karly laughed "Yes, I'm fine."

"I feel like a jerk...is there any way I can make this up to you?" Sidney said

"Well...if you'd like...you could just jog with me and talk to me. I'm new to the neighborhood." Karly said hoping he'd say 'yes'

He smiled "Okay. So you're new here? Where did you used to live?"

"California." Karly replied as they started jogging again

"Oh...why did you move here, then?" Sidney asked

"Well...my parents died and I wanted to start my own life somewhere else." she replied

Sidney stopped running "I'm so sorry..."

"It's OK. I know they're in a better place." Karly assured him. He nodded and continued running "What about you...why do you live here? I can tell you're not a native."

Sidney laughed "You are correct. I'm from Canada."

"Really? Why do you live here then?" Karly asked

"My um...job requires me to, but I go home every Summer." he said

"A job that gives you Summers off? That must be nice." Karly said

"Yeah..." he said "So, Karly, what do you do?"

"Oh...I don't do much. I'm planning on attending the university and going into nursing. My father was a surgeon and I want to follow in his path." Karly replied

She noticed his face light up "Well we have something in common. I do what my dad did too."

Karly smiled "Oh yeah? What exactly do you do?"

"I play hockey." he said with a smile

Then it hit Karly. She remembered where she recognized him. From the TV and from Nikki's bedroom wall. "Oh my gosh you're Sidney Crosby! The hockey player!"

"I am..." he said

"Wow...I'm...just wow." Karly said

"I was hoping you'd figure that out much later..." he said

"What?" Karly asked

"Uh nothing...listen I have to go. It was nice meeting you." he said starting off

"Wait!" Karly called to him . He turned back to face her "I had a really good time with you...even for just a few minutes. I'd really like to hang out with you again." she said

Then he smiled again. Karly was beginning to love that smile. "OK."

"Take my number and just whenever you're free give me a call." Karly said scribbling her cell number down and handing it to him.

He pulled out a BlackBerry and put the numbers into his phone. "I'll text you my number. Have a nice day, Karly...and sorry again for knocking you over."

"Oh it's alright." Karly said smiling. He gave her a nod and jogged off. Karly squealed in excitement and headed back to her house. Right when she opened the door she had a new message

Unknown says:Hey, this is Sidney(:

Karly says:Hey! Thanks for you number. Maybe we can meet up tomorrow for coffee or something?

Sidney says:Sure. I'll call you. See you soon.

Karly says: Yup!

Karly smiled and put her phone away. He was such a nice guy for a huge athlete. Most athletes were jerks or full of themselves, but Sidney Crosby seemed...different. Like he was a genuine person. Karly didn't know where this would go, but she was excited to find out.
