Never Let Go.

‘Kieran’s POV’

With all of my scheduled appointments out of the way I got to leave the office before noon. Which gives me plenty of time to take a pregnancy test before Jamie gets home for his pre-game nap. After sliding discreetly through the self-checkout at Walmart I made it home with three tests, a near exploding bladder, and a racing heart. After letting Knox out to pee I set up camp in our master bathroom closing the door behind me just in case.

20 minutes later I’m still standing here staring at the unopened box, I really have to go to the bathroom but I just can’t get myself to do it. I’m not ready to find out if I am carrying a tiny human in my stomach, just thinking about it makes my head spin. I’m brought out of my thoughts by the beeping of our alarm system, Jamie’s home early. I finally open the box laying the three sticks out on the vanity, step one complete now I just need to pee.

“Kieran?” I can hear my name being yelled as Jamie enters our bedroom. “Babe are you in there?” Uh oh. “Umm, yeah.” I draw out, “You okay? What are you doing home early?” Shit, he’s observant today. “I’m, uhh, I’m fine. Just not a busy day.” He wiggles the door handle, thank god I locked it. “Babe you don’t sound so convincing, let me in.” Deep breath in, deep breath out, “I’ll be out in a minute, I’m uhh…” He’s not convinced. “I’ll go get the key Kieran, just let me in dammit. You are scaring me.” Fine. I unlock the door moving away from it and standing in front of the vanity, the three plastic sticks staring me in the face.

“What’re you-“he doesn’t have to finish the sentence as he looks down at the vanity his brown eyes growing wide. Pulling my bottom lip between my teeth I wait for him to speak, but he just continues to stare at the sticks. “I haven’t taken them yet.” Jamie finally looks at me, “You think you’re, preg, uhh pregnant?” I nod and I can’t really read his emotions right now as his face is blank and he’s a little paler than usual. “Maybe I should wait and take them after the game, you uhh might be less distracted then.” He looks at me like I’m crazy, “Oh Hell no. I wanna know now.” Staring back at the little white sticks I quietly agree, shooing Jamie out of the bathroom and finally emptying my bladder.

‘Jamie’s POV’

Pregnant. She’s pregnant, holy shit. Well she might be pregnant, I guess we’ll find out in 3 minutes. Oh my God, I might be a dad. I’m supposed to be napping before the game but here I am standing in the bathroom while my wife paces back and forth waiting for a plastic stick to tell us our future. I’m nervous but I am also really excited, I’ve been waiting for this to happen and it’s not like we were trying to prevent it anymore. Kieran stops pacing as her phone vibrates on the counter, times up.

Kieran has the sticks face down on the counter so the results are hidden, as she stares at them her breathing picks up. “Babe it’s okay we can do this.” I wrap my arms around her waist standing behind her hands resting on her stomach. “Easy for you to say Jame, you don’t have to grow a human being.” True, that has to suck but I know she can do it. “I’ll be right beside you the whole way Kier. How about we flip em over.” She nods and I reach out to flip one over, “Eww no,” she swats my hand away “Those are covered in my pee Jamie.”

Kieran flips the first stick over, crystal clear are the cliché two pink lines. “Oh God,” she mumbles a hand covering her mouth. The second one presents with the same conclusion, and we’re two for two. As she reaches for the third and final test tears are rolling down her cheeks, the third test is positive as well. “I’m pregnant.” She says flatly staring at me, fear showing in her normally bright blue eyes.

She may be scared but I can’t hide my excitement, “I’m going to be a dad!” I cheer throwing my arms up in the air trying to get her to smile, this is such great news! We’re finally having a family! “Kier, babe you’re going to be such a great mom we can totally do this!” She lets out a stream of air and finally cracks that perfect smile her hands resting on her still flat stomach.

“You’re right, yeah we can totally do this. Oh my gosh, we’re going to be parents!” Her tone is much happier as she speaks this time, almost ecstatic. Taking her in my arms my eyes are a little watery too, “I love you so much Kieran this is amazing.” Head in the crook of my neck she looks up at me, “I love you too Jame, but umm can we keep this between us until its official?” I agree before pulling her into bed for a short nap.

When we wake up it’s time to get ready for the game, as Kieran cleans up the bathroom documenting the sticks for later reference I dress in my suit. In the mirror behind me I can see her getting dressed for the game herself, she has pants on but she has yet to put on a shirt. Standing in just her bra she’s staring down at her stomach, the body she had worked so hard for about to grow to accommodate another life.

Standing in front of her I tilt her chin up to look at me, “You are so beautiful Kieran, nothing is ever going to change that.” She rolls her eyes, “You won’t be saying that when I look like a whale.” Still holding her face in my hands I shake my head, “You will always be gorgeous to me, right now, 9 months from now when you’re about to pop, and 60 years from now when we’re old and wrinkly. You will always be beautiful, got it?”

She smiles while a tear rolls down her cheeks, “God, I love you.” I peck her lips, “I love you too, and” I crouch down level with her stomach. “Hi in there, I’m your daddy and I just want to tell you that I love you already and I hope that you’re going to be smart and beautiful like your mommy. Well maybe just not red headed,” that earns me a scoff and a shove from Kieran but it was worth it to make her smile. I place a kiss above her belly button before standing back up, I could get used to having little chats with Kieran’s stomach. Here’s to hoping those three sticks aren’t wrong.
