Flying Home

Two

"That was one of the most forward things I have ever seen you do." Maddie tells Jon as he slips on his blazer and grabs his bag and her duffle bag. He chuckles and shrugs, taking her hand and leading her towards the exit to the player's parking lot where his car was waiting. He decided to avoid the media that night because of the scene he had caused with Maddie. He wanted to let everything calm down first before answering questions about it. And anyways, tonight was about Maddie being home and he didn't want anything to disrupt that.

"I can be spontaneous, sometimes." Now with was Maddie's turn to laugh. "Anyways, what are you doing home? I thought you were supposed to be on duty for another six months." he asks her as they climb into the car. Without a word, Maddie unzips her army jacket, revealing just a white tank top underneath. Wrapped around her right shoulder is a gauze, slowly flilling with blood. Jon's fingers tenderly trace the outline of the gauze.

Now that Jon sat back and had a good look at her, Maddie was covered in cuts, scrapes and bruises. There was a large gash along her hairline on the left side of her forehead and a couple smalled cuts along her jawline. Across her shoulders and her chest were long bruises and burns. Her right arm was singed, looking like it had been in some kind of fire, and smaller cuts littered her upper body which appeared to be from shards of glass. She lifts her shirt which reveals a set of about twelve stitches along the left side of her stomach. A thin piece of guaze was taped delicately over it.

"What happened?" Jon asks quietly.

"Plane crash." she replies. "I was flying over enemy territory at night when I was hit. The right side of my plane was on fire and I crashed when the right wing fell off. The windows shattered which is how I got all the cuts, the seat belt gave me the bruises. I clipped my chin on the steering device, that's where the gash on my head came from too. I was thrown into some of the controls which punctured some organs in my lower body so they had to do an immediate operation. And this," she points to her shoulder. "Is where they shot me while I was running through the woods." Jon's mouth hung open slightly as everything sunk in of what this girl had gone through. He thought hockey injuries were bad, but hers were much worse. Going through a plane crash and being shot - boy he couldn't complain the next time he got a black eye.

"Maddie," he whispers but she silences him by leaning over and pressing a kiss to his lips.

"I'm glad you're home safe now." he says once they've pulled away. He puts the car into gear and drives towards his apartment. He pulls into the parking garage and carries their bags up to his room while keeping an arm around her the whole time. They quickly undress, tired from their day.

"Nice goal you had tonight, and what, two assists?" Maddie chuckles, pulling on one of Jon's shirts over her underwear.

"Three."

"What a big shot." Maddie teases crawling into bed next to Jon, who's already stripped down to his boxers. She pulls her hair out of the bun and lets it fall in soft waves around her shoulders. She falls back into Jon's arms and he reaches over to flip off the bedside light.

"Would you change it?" he asks after a long period of silence.

"What?"

"Would you go back and change your decision, decided to just stay in Chicago instead?"

"No." silence follows her answer until Jon speaks.

"You're the strongest, bravest person I know." he pulls her into his chest and hold her tight, afraid she might disappear again.
