Flying Home

Three

✈ Two Weeks Later ✈

Maddie hears the door to Jon's apartment slam, signaling he was home. She had hardly gone back to her apartment since she got back. She'd gone over to pick up a couple changes of clothes and some other small necessities but she really didn't need much, she'd been taught to live without a lot while in the army. Jon told her she should just sell her apartment and move in with him because she spent so much time here anyways. Maddie wasn't so sure. She liked having her own apartment that she could escape to if she needed it. Plus, although she really liked Jon, she didn't want to go to fast and mess everything up.

"Hey babe." Jon says, entering the kitchen where she was perched on a stool at the counter. He drops his duffle bag outside the kitchen entry and wanders around the kitchen, filling himself a glass of water. His hair is still damp from the shower he took after practice and he's only wearing a pair of basketball shorts and a tight muscle shirt that stretches tightly over his muscled arms.

"Hey. So I wanted to talk to you about something." Maddie bites her lip. Jon gives her a quizzical look and arches an eyebrow, wondering what their 'talk' could be about.

"What's up?" Jon asks skeptically.

"I was offered a job today." Maddie replies, avoiding Jon's gaze.

"Well that's awesome. I don't understand why you would be worried about telling me that." Jon downs the rest of his water and sets the empty glass in the sink.

"The job is very time consuming. I'd have to work a lot of odd hours and would be on call all the time. Any time they need me, I'd have to go into work." Jon raises an eyebrow, curious to know what a job with requirements like that was.

"What kind of a job is it?"

"I can't really tell you the specifics. It's a government security job so most of it is pretty secretive. I'd tell you more if I could, but I can't." Jon still looks at her concerned.

"Is it dangerous?"

"Potentially."

"Maddie..."

"Jon..." Maddie mocks, rolling her eyes. "I went through war, I'm sure I can handle anything they throw at me."

"I know I'm not going to be able to change your mind, and I won't be mad wether you decide to take the job or not. I really don't want you in harms way but if it's what you want to do, go ahead and do it. I know you aren't really asking for my permission. Just please, stay safe because I don't know what I would do if I lost you." Jon places a kiss on Maddie's forehead and announces that he is going to take a pre-game nap before his game tonight.

"You coming?" he asks.

"Of course, Jon. I haven't missed one since I got back."

"Well I got you something." he reaches into his duffle bag and removes a jersey from it, obviously advertising the name Toews on the back. Maddie sqeals, grabbing the fabric from his hands and hugging it to her chest. She leans in and presses a kiss to his lips and he smiles seeing how happy the gift made Maddie.

"Thank you so much!" she says. She lays the jersey out flat on the back of the sofa. "Now go take a nap or you'll be tired for your game tonight."

"Come nap with me?" he begs, pushing out his lower lip and looking at her with his mesmorizing chocolate orbs. She finally agrees and he grabs her hand, tugging her into his room and pulling her down onto the bed.

"I sleep better when you're with me." Jon admits, pulling her to his chest. "Plus, you're my good luck charm."

"I thought Jonathan Toews didn't have superstitions." Maddie teaches, arching an eyebrow.

"I don't. I just said you were my good luck charm." Jon shrugs. "Now be quiet, I need sleep." Maddie obliges and lays peacefully in Jon's presence. Suddenly a particular thought enters her mind and she just can't seem to shake it.

"Jon?" she asks quietly. He grunts a response, telling her he's awake but not happy about it. "What are we?" Jon's eyes open and he scan her face, a serrious expression on her face.

"Well I don't just kiss anyone or let them sleep in my bed or stay in my apartment and I sure as hell don't let just anyone interrupt my pre-game nap."

"Always with the jokes." Maddie chuckles.

"That's not even remotely a joke." she looks at his still serious face, not even the trace of a smile on it. She never realized how serious Jon was about her.

"So then what are we?" she repeats softly, already having an idea of where Jon was going with the conversation. His reply makes her smile and cuddle closer to him.

"You're my girl."
