It's a Girl's Game

“I’m sorry, what?” Jamie yelled at her captain after on practice.
“Ok, so we have this dinner and it’s almost like a party, kind of. You have to come, and you have to get dressed up, at least not what you are wearing,” Sid explained for about the 12th time.
“Yeah, that isn’t going to work,” she said turning away only to be grabbed by Sid.
“You have, you don’t have to like it, but you have to go,” he said.
“But why?” she asked, dragging out the y.
“We all have to go, didn’t you do this for Assat?” Sid asked.
“We had get-togethers but we never had to dress up, it’s pretty stupid,” Jamie said, composing herself when she saw a couple of the guys come in.
“You have to wear a dress,” Sid said.
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t own a dress, why do you think I never wore one on the plane,” Jamie said, getting very annoyed with the topic.
“Then you better go out and by one,” Sid said.
“But-”
“No, you are going, how can I make that more clear? I swear sometimes you’re the most mature person I’ve met then things like this happen,” he said, throwing his hands up in the air.
“Girl troubles?” Flower asked coming up next to them.
“Yes.”
“Fine have it your way,” Jamie grumbled,” Come on Downie.”
“Where are we going?” Steve asked, a little scared.
“Dress shopping so I can please my captain,” Jamie yelled dragging Steve Downie out of the room with her.
“Poor boy, poor, poor boy,” Flower said.
“I swear she is a kid sometimes.”
After going to 4 stores and dragging Downie through the worst two hours of his life, Jamie finally a dress she would wear.
“Well, it’s about time, do you have any idea how boring this is?” Steve asked as they were leaving the mall.
“Yes,” Jamie said
“Really?”
“Two of my brothers are married, the other is engaged. When my now sister-in-laws went dress shopping they decided to bring me along. Do you have any idea what it is like to go wedding dress hoping when you are 13 and 15, but have no fashion sense at all. Olli’s brother has better fashion sense then I do,” Jamie said.
“Olli has a brother?” Steve asked
“Two, thanks for coming with me,” Jamie said.
“You didn’t really give me a choice,” Steve said, “ See you tonight.”
Jamie got back to her apartment three hours before she had to leave. After she got something to eat she noticed a text from Sid: You kill Downie yet?
She shook her head and replied: No, but I thought he was going to kill me
‘Two and a half hours before I have to leave, time to get ready. Who knows how long it will take me to do my make up?’
Sid had a feeling this night was not going to be good. Don’t get the wrong idea, he knew this was part of being a professional, but he didn’t know what Jamie would do. She didn’t seem that excited about tonight. He did not expect her to come in here where a royal blue dress with heel and have her hair down. Either Sid was going crazy or Jamie was wearing make up.
“Sup Crosby,” Jamie said slinging an arm around him.
“Wow, you clean up nice Jokinen,” Sid applauded.
“I try,” she said when her eyes landed on Olli.
“Olli,” she called, “come over here.”
“What? Who died?” he asked eyeing Jamie's dress.
“Very funny,” Jamie growled, and then pointed to Sid, “He made me ware this,”
“Lets get going kids,” Sid said walking farther into the room.
The night was actually going pretty well. Jamie got to meet fans and the dress wasn’t even that bad. She was talking Olli, Downie and Hornqvist when she heard someone call her name.
“Jamie!” she heard someone call again. Jamie thought it was just one of the players or a fan so she shrugged it off and turned around to see who was calling her. She was not expecting to see the women she hates the most.
“Jamie!” Ada Ellstrom called again. One look at her and Jamie wanted to show her how hard a pro hockey player could hit, instead she moved a little closer to Olli.
“What’s wrong?” Olli asked when he felt Jamie move next to him.
“Ada is here, I have no idea why,” she replied as her ‘mother’ came up to their little group.
“Jamie,” she said one more time before taker her daughter in her arms. Jamie pulled away glaring at her mother.
“What are you doing here?” she asked coldly.
“Can’t a mother come and watch her daughter do something she loves and then talk to her?” she asked.
“Sure, if said mother actually cared about what said daughter did,” Jamie snapped.
“Jamielyn, you know I love you. I’m your mother; I’m going to respect whatever you do,” Ada said.
“No! You stopped being my mother the minute you turned your back on dad and me, just because he lost his job. Do you have any idea how hard that was? I was 5! He wasn’t the one who went running off to Sweden just because our family was having a little money trouble. No, that was you. The minute I have more money that you, you decide that I am important and not mistake. You know what I don’t really care why you came here, just stay out of my life,” Jamie said before turning and leaving the scene she created.
Ada looked confused then her eyes landed on Olli and she blew up.
“Olli Maatta, you ruined my daughter!” she yelled, “I told you to stay away from her, but no, you had to go and get her into a terrible sport where she can get hurt. You and you brothers made her hate me. Stay away from Jamie!”
“You know what Mrs. Ellstrom, that didn’t work when we were kids and it sure as hell isn’t going to work now,” Olli said turning to go find Jamie.
The two left behind a very confused Ada Ellstrom and a just as confused hockey team. Olli knew Jamie just had to cool down, but he also knew her mother had no right marching in here acting as if everything was fine. It might take a hockey game for Jamie to get her anger out, but they had one in two days so she should be fine, hopefully.
