Skating in the Dark

What Happened?

I can't remember what happened. All I remember is that I was skating. Now I’m sitting in what appears to be a hospital room. A nurse walks in and tells me that a doctor will be in shortly. A tall dark-haired doctor walks in and stands in front of me. He looks me in the eyes and says “I’m sorry to inform you, Tina, but you had quite a fall out there on the ice. And as a result your vision is fading. This is most likely to get worse in the next week, and can cause complete blindness. And this means that you can't skate anymore. The competition is over for you, and there are no more in your future. Also your sponsors have agreed to help you out for the next month, then you are on your own.”
I can’t believe what I just heard. I just stare straight ahead and don’t say anything. I finally see him walk out and that’s when I allow myself to cry. I hear someone come in and sit down. They hand me a card and then leave. I open the card and I read it. I can’t believe it when I finish. It's just my eyes I keep telling myself. Then I hear someone else come in. It’s my best friend Erin. She notices that I have been crying.
“I’m so sorry. I know how much it meant to you, but you will always have me and Zac. You can always count on us. Okay?” She states.
I try to look at her, then just stare at the card that he left me. “Erin, can you read this to me? I’m pretty sure that I know what it says, but my eyes could be playing tricks on me. I just want to make sure.” I ask her while looking at my hands. She replied and took the card from my hands at the same time.
“Of course. If you need anything just ask.” She opened up the card and started to read it to me. “Dear Tina, I hope that you can get better, but it doesn’t look like it. And because of this, we have to breakup. I got offered a job out in Boston and it would be too much work for me to pack everything and help you get used to being blind and helping you around. Plus I want to be able to date someone who doesn’t have problems. So as of now we are no longer together. I already packed up all of your stuff and I left it with one of the nurses. Good luck. You are gonna need it.” She finished reading, closed the card and looked up at me. I nod my head and mumble “I was right.” and then start crying. She stands up and hugs me. I keep crying and embrace her too.
“I’m so sorry,” she says, “he is such an idiot, and he will never meet anyone who just wants him and not his money.” We start to sit back down when a nurse walks in and says that I am free to go as long as Erin drives me home and someone stays with me. We get all of my stuff that he dropped off and get it into her car. Then she drives me over to her house. We get all of my stuff out of her car and into her garage and make sure that I have everything.
“Wait. I have everything, but my car and my dog. I can’t drive, so how am I supposed to get my car or my dog back?” I ask Erin.
“Well if you trust me enough to drive it, Jerry and I could drive over and then I can drive your car here. If that is okay with you.” She says as we start to put most of my stuff back into its box. I get my keys out of my purse and hand them to her.
“I will call Jerry and we will go over as soon as we can. I can also get your dog when we go over. I promise. You can stay here for as long as you need. If you need anything just ask me.” She says as she takes my keys and starts to call Jerry on her cell phone. She leaves the room and I stay where I am and curl up into a ball. I start thinking about the events of the day and slowly get up and make my way to the room that is now my room. I get onto the bed and start crying into the pillow as I remember the routine and the pain I felt when I fell.I continue crying until I fall asleep.
