She Was The Friend He Needed

Chapter 9

New Teammate

Training camp started and Sid was glad he was ready for the season to start it was basically what he lived for he truly loved the game.
Training camp always hard as lose teammates in the offseason and new ones coming in and this season the Penguins were finally getting their 2004 draft pick it wasn't easy to get Evgeni Malkin over here but finally he was here.

But it was getting confusing in camp at times as he really didn't speak English yet and had a translator it did help some when Sergei Gonchar was out there with him, but that wasn't all the time.

After the first full week of training camp the team was adjusting and all but after the week Sid was frustrated he called Cassie hoping she could come out to eat that night with him he needed someone to vent to. He was in luck as she didn't work that night

They met up at their favorite diner it was a place they didn't ever have to really deal with people bugging Sid She saw him and could tell he was maybe off somewhat or something she says “Ok hockey god out with what up but I swear If it's a crazy ass girl I am out of here”

"No it's not a girl at all I am just frustrated after a week at camp” Sid says

“You frustrated with hockey wow what is wrong with my best friend the hockey god himself” Cassie says

“Ha ha very funny” Sid says “

"Ok really Sidney what's up” Cassie asks

“So you know we finally have Evgeni Malkin here” Sid says

“Yeah and that's a good thing you guys should have had him here last year. That was a mess and finally it's over”Cassie says

“Yeah I know and your right” Sid says

“What wait is he stealing your thunder is that what this is about hockey god worried about that title?” Cassie asks

“Nope not at all he can take that if he like.” Sid says

“So what is it?” Cassie asks

"It's the communication it's horrible he doesn't speak English” Sid says

"You do realize he Russian of course he doesn't speak English Sid” Cassie says

"I know but I thought he know some and he has a translator but it's not easy when trying to run plays and all. It's frustrating I mean sometimes Sergei is out there with us and that makes it a little better but it's driving me up the wall not to be able to communicate what play and all” Sid says

“Sid think about how it was for you adjusting here last year now multiple that by at least 10. Yes you are from another country too but Canada is pretty close to how the United States is. Your parents have a couple hour plane ride and can be here to see you. You speak the language. He doesn't speak the language, this country is a lot different than Russian and his parents are over on the other side of the ocean.” Cassie says

“Yeah I get that but it's still frustrating I want to be able to communicate and make plays with him make this team better” Sid says

“I know and that's what someday is going to make you a great Captain for this team” Cassie says

“I don't know if I will ever be named Captain and it's a long time away if I would be” Sid says

“Mark my words and mark your calendar on today that I said you Sidney Crosby someday will be the Captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins it's not an If but when” Cassie says

“Thanks Cassie and thanks for letting me vent” Sid says

“That's what friends are for but you know your cost is the bill for dinner and getting me ice cream to take back to my dorm for later” Cassie says

“That's easy done” Sid says

“For what it's worth about the team and Egveni don't let it frustrate you work with him and Sergei plus the translator for now on signals and signs to communicate til his English gets better. He probably feels the same as you do or even worse and could use another friend beside Sergei cause he more like the older brother he needs a friend closer in age” Cassie says

“I know I will work on it I promise” Sid says

“Good now that's my best friend I know the one who is always in check and level headed not that frustrated guy I saw when I first got here” Cassie says

They finish dinner and Sid as promised stopped and got ice cream for Cassie And drove her back to her dorm for the night.

Sid was determined to do as Cassie said and try to figure out a way to make it work with their communication because he knew if he could get that worked out they could really help and get this team in major sync

. Him and Sergei worked on some signs “Think this will work” Sid asks

"Oh yeah” Sergei says

“Good” Sid says


“He so happy you thought of the idea he was getting upset at himself for not understanding” Sergei says

. “I can't take all the credit I was getting frustrated and talk to Cassie to try to vent and she made me see he gotta be a lot more frustrated than I am plus how much he has to be going thru cause of the differences. She said maybe signals and signs could help for now.” Sid says

"Well she was right and it helps trust me” Sergei says

“Good I am so glad and happy” Sid says

Sergei translates what Sid just said to Egveni who said something back to Sergei in Russian

“He wants to tell you thank you and how much better he feels and happy he” Sergei says

"Good that's what I wanted to hear we are a team and a team and teammates band together and stick together” Sid says

The next few days training camp went really well it worked out really good they could communicate when needed and they were in sync.

After training camp ended early the next day Sid called Cassie and says “I owe you dessert or dinner or movie whatever you want”

“Why do you owe me whatever I want” Cassie asks

" Because you idea for the team and signs for now it worked and things are so much better turns out Egveni was even more frustrated and felt it was his fault” Sid says

“See I told you” Cassie says

"Yes you do so what your idea for what I owe you” Sid says

“Hmm let me think how about that” Cassie says

“Why do I feel it's going to be a huge thing or something” Sid says laughing

"It’s not a huge thing, but I know you guys are in Pittsburgh for Halloween and don't play that night so come with me Timmy grandparents for it I have to go to hand out candy they do it up right and all the family dresses up in a theme” Cassie says

“Ok for you since you did something that helped me I will do it. So I dare ask the theme this year?” Sid asks

“They choose winter wonderland my grandfather even got a snow machine and and other stuff so I was thinking a penguin playing hockey for you as I already have to dress as a penguin that's what pap picked it for me” Cassie says

“Aright I am in as I said I do whatever you want me to” Sid says

"Thank you you're saving me as my aunt will be there and she a bitch but I betting any money with you there she will be on her best behavior” Cassie says

“Yeah” Sid says laughing

They got off the phone and Sid just thought to himself what did I get myself into but getting to do something fun for Halloween would be awesome and he get to hang out with his best friends

i have to write when Geno came to the team cause in the other story how close him and Sid are felt it was important.
