AAOOOSC! United

“I Was The Only Witness.”

Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada
July 8, 2017
Night

The interior of Connor’s home is deluged with darkness. Sitting at the end of the surface is Connor, who has a drastic shadow across his face from a cyan-coloured light glowing in front of him.

The light in front of him is coming from his thought projection, which has the appearance of a hologram: Thin, glowing, translucent lines creating a map along with text and simple imagery.

Connor has his eyes fixated on the projection, reflecting the cyan-coloured light as they dart from one side to the other. He mutters faded phrases under his breath as more words pop up in front of him and the images move around:

“And then I can do this…” He pauses as he stares at the projection. “...but then that would happen, no…”

An image of the Stanley Cup flies from one side of the projection to another.

Connor lets out a short exhale. “Maybe I can go over here and…” His voice fades as he watches a cut-out of himself whizz to New York. “No, they won’t do anything—”

Knock, knock, knock!

The projection immediately disperses, dropping the room back into its warm, dim lighting. Connor straightens up, his eyes widen.

“Who is it…?” He then holds still as he feels the surge of his powers flow around his head and eyes.

A mental image of the one knocking vividly forms in his head.

Connor’s eyebrows then knit with confusion as he shifts his focus away from the image. “Auston Matthews?”

The front door flies open, revealing Connor in a white T-shirt and his dress pants, belt, and socks in the doorway. He has a surprised expression on his face.

“Auston!” he exclaims warmly, clutching onto the door above his head.

Standing outside on the porch in the dark is Auston, who still has his formal attire on. A smirk is etched on his face as his hands are stuffed in his pants’ pockets.

“McDavid,” he replies back smoothly. “Greetings.”

Connor plops himself against the doorjamb, crossing his arms. “What brings you here?” He raises his eyebrows with interest.

“Do you like to work alone or in a group?” Auston cocks an eyebrow, holding his subtle, amused expression.

Shock grows across Connor’s face gradually as he processes Auston’s hint. “Wait…” He straightens up, dropping his arms. “You want to work with me?”

“If you’d like me to work with you.”

A fiendish grin grows on Connor’s face. “Oh-hoh.” He rubs his hands together in eagerness. “You know what I’m working for, eh?”

Auston slides up to him, gazing deeply into his eyes. “The whole NHL. In your hands,” he rumbles lowly.

Connor leans back with a satisfied smile. “That’s right. So you were listening.”

“That’s what one tends to do when they’re at the back of the party with nothing else to do.” He shrugs, also leaning away.

“You know what?” Connor nods his head behind his shoulder. “Come on in. We got some discussing to do.” He then turns around and disappears into the house’s darkness.

Auston steps after him, following him through the shadows.

He then arrives at the dimly-lit countertop just as Connor is settling himself back in his place.

Connor reaches out for a bar stool perpendicular to him and twirls it to face his visitor. “Sit here.”

Auston does so and spins to him with his hands on his lap.

Connor interlaces his fingers on the surface. “So you want to take over the NHL with me?”

“Yes,” Auston replies quickly. “But, there’s something else I’d like to accomplish.”

Connor narrows his eyes at him. “What?”

He leans over toward him. “I want to annihilate all women’s professional hockey leagues as well.”

Connor gives him a look of disgust. “What’s that got to do with this?”

“I was thinking of a deal—” He leans away, straightening himself up with superiority. “I can help you take over the NHL, you can help me annihilate the women’s leagues, and we can BOTH rule over the NHL.” A cunning smirk grows on his face. “How’s that?”

Connor slides back against his chair, rubbing his stubble-lined chin in deep thought. “Hmmm…” He has his narrowed eyes cast to aside. “I wanted to rule the NHL by myself...but determining the destiny of other leagues sounds great...and I can use the extra help…”

He turns back to Auston, dropping his hand. “That is a great deal.” He pulls himself back up and holds his hand out toward him. “I’m sold.”

With his smirk intensifying, Auston promptly clasps his hand onto Connor’s and shakes it. “Glad to be doing business with you. Can’t wait to get what we want.”

“Sure, sure.” Connor pulls his hand away from him. “Now, I’ve been trying to figure out how to go about this in the most efficient and safest way as possible.”

“I say we start at the source of the obstacle,” Auston states sternly. “Which would be…”

“...the darn GHP,” Connor finishes with a growl under his breath.

Auston folds his arms on the table. “I actually have some news regarding the GHP that you missed after you left.”

Connor perks up at him with interested. “Really? What is it?”

“Well, they know that Toews, Kane, MacKinnon, and Rinne are gone,” he starts off with raises eyebrows.

“Oh course they know, they’re not that stupid,” Connor remarks with a roll of his eyes. “Do they know where they are?”

He silently shakes his head. “I didn’t tell them.”

Connor leans closer to him with scrutinizing eyes. “You know where they are?”

“I watched the whole thing…” He pulls away from him with crossed arms. “It didn’t take rocket science to know that you took them. It’s not a coincidence they left when you left and were victims to your powers.”

Connor leans back, keeping his skeptical eyes on him. “So how do they not know where they are?”

“No one else saw it,” he answers promptly. “I was the only witness: Gorman wasn’t there, the others were down in pain.”

A heinous closed smile creeps onto Connor’s face as he nods his head. “I like it. And I do have them. In hostage. In another room.” He nods head to his right. “Over there.”

Auston peers at the nod’s direction, seeing only but darkness. “Quiet crowd.”

“I knocked them out,” Connor replies quickly.

He turns back to face him. “Smart move.”

“Of course.” Connor peers down at him. “I don’t want to attract any attention. Or be pestered.”

Auston nods his head. “I see. It’s easy to knock people out with your powers.” He slightly frowns. “Mine’s a different story.”

“Ah, plant and syrup manipulation, eh?” Connor gives him a pitiful expression.

He shrugs. “Yeah. I’m making the most of it. Better than nothing.”

Connor raises an index finger. “That is true.” He lowers his hand. “So any other news on the GHP?”

Auston’s eyebrows fly up. “Oh yes! They actually expressed fear of the task of defeating you and saving four of their members when there is only three of them.”

Connor chuckles in dark amusement. “Heh, heh, heh…”

“Therefore, they recruited a new member,” he finishes off.

Connor instantly drops his quiet celebration for shock. “What? Who?”

“Reid Duke.” Auston lets out a scoff. “Of course they had to accept the new power player.”

“Reid Duke…” Connor straightens up and lifts his eyes toward the ceiling as he rummages in his mind for information. “Golden Knights’ first power player… Powers include chivalry, equestrian empathy, sword manipulation, enhanced swordsmanship, sword beam emission, companion allegiance with Kale Clague to achieve portal manipulation.”

Auston has narrowed eyes toward the countertop’s smooth surface as he processes what he is hearing. “Companion allegiance. That means he can merge.”

Connor drifts from the mental information and sneers, “With a junior power player.”

He lets out a chuckle. “Hah, right.

Connor gazes at him. “They got a merger on their team. They got more confidence with this power player, eh?”

He nods his head. “Yes, they seem much more relaxed with him, as if they can take you on.”

“Hmmm…” Connors scratches his head. “We have to knock him out of the game.”

“I say we attack him first.” A glint of craftiness flashes in Auston’s eyes. “And it’d be double points for us if he’s with his alleged companion: killing two birds with one stone.”
