"A Fanciful Day at the Beach"

Meanwhile, deep in the ocean, Kale and Reid are now weaving through a mass of majestic coral. The hard, rough structures are jutting from the rocks in all sorts of shapes and colours, displaying its magnificence while being used as a home for fish.

Reid is taking a gaze at each coral in awe, touching its texture and animals stuck with it, such as sea anemones, as vivid fish zip by him.

Look at this stuff,

He brushes his fingers against the stony texture of a salmon-coloured coral.

Isn't it neat?

He darts to a yellow, rounded coral.

Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?

He spins around in a showy fashion, his glinting tail following behind him, gazing up at the vibrant array of corel towering above him.

Wouldn't you think I'm the girl—?

Kale is behind him, gazing at the radiant sight in slight awe. He reverts his gaze at him. “You're a guy.”

Reid halts his show and peers down at his friend.

Well, those ARE the lyrics.

With a sigh, Kale slaps his forehead.

Reid whirls back around, spotting a clump of different-coloured coral with spaces in between its levels.

Look at this trove,

He darts up at it with curiosity.

Treasures untold.

He begins to trace a blue coral’s edge delicately.

How many wonders can one cavern hold?

He peers upward with his hand on his chin, following the majestic, jutting direction of the coral.

Looking around here you think—

“Yeah, you got a tail, so you got everything,” Kale finishes off, extending his hand toward Reid’s light blue tail.

Reid twirls around to face him, clasping his hands below his chin with a massive grin.

Yes!

Kale then gives him a smirk while crossing his arms. “And then you wanna sing how you want to be a human again.”

Nooo...

Reid gradually turns back around, gazing up at the towering rocks dotted with coral.

“Well that's how the song goes,” Kale points out.

Reid then dips down and continues singing:

Down where they dive,

He swerves around a cluster of coral.

Down where they swim,

He flips over to face the surface, staring at the glorious sea scenery lit up by the sun’s rays.

Down where they stay all day in the sea!

He twirls around, back to regular swimming position.

Swimming so free,

He bolts upward, leaving a trail of bubbles behind.

Now I could be,

He halts in the middle of the water, near the top of the tall coral, and belts out:

A mer-r-maaan!

He holds his arms out from his sides, finishing his number as if he is on a Broadway show.

Kale is gazing up at him with a slight frown. “That doesn't rhyme.”

“Still works for me!” Reid remarks, finally ceasing his singing. He drops his hands.

Suddenly, sharp, clear, pitchy whistles echo through the water.

Kale snaps his heads in all direction with bewildered eyes. “Whoa, what was that?!”

Reid gasps excitedly. “That sounds like dolphins!” He turns to him.

He gawks up at him. “Dolphins?!”

“Yeah!” Reid lifts his eyes ahead of him, beyond Kale.

Right away, he spots a pod of gray and white bottlenose dolphins drifting through the waters.

“THERE THEY ARE!!!” He jabs his index finger toward them.

Kale spins around, his majestical tail following him. An awe-filled expression comes across his face as his eyes land on the sea creatures. “Whoa, you weren't kidding.”

“Ohhh, I wanna ride one so badly!” Reid shakes his fists near his jaw, attempting to contain his excitement.

Kale peers up at him from behind his shoulder. “You can ride dolphins?”

He throws his hands in the air. “Yeah!”

“How?”

Reid drops his hands. “We ask of course!” He lightly slaps his forehead. “Duh!”

“We can't ask dolphins—” Kale holds his hands out toward the gliding pod. “—they're animals.”

“Hey, I know how to talk to dolphins.” He gives him a serious expression and crosses his arms. “Being up at two a.m. on YouTube comes to good use!”

Realization comes across Kale’s face. “So that’s the noise that wakes me up in the middle of the night!”

“Mystery solved!” Reid then speeds past Kale, approaching the dolphins.

Kale follows him cautiously, spotting his friend joining the floating pod.

Reid glides right beside the dolphins and whistles at the them loud and clear.

The dolphins peer at them with their beady black eyes and instantly squeak in return. They then slow down to a halt.

Reid’s eyes immediately light up. “They said yes!” He turns to his right, where Kale lines up with him. “We can ride on them!”

Kale eyes his friend drifting up a stopped dolphin. “Really?”

Reid holds onto a dolphin’s gray dorsal fin with both hands, hovering over it. “Yeah! Come on, Kale!”

Kale shrugs with a slight smile, concluding the activity to not be harmful. “Alright!”

He slowly approaches a nearby dolphin and softly holds onto its smooth, sleek dorsal fin with both hands. He peers at Reid. “Ready!”

“Awesome!” Reid gives a whistle to the dolphins.

Right on cue, the dolphins squeak in rejoinder and dash off in a trail of bubbles.

The taut water brushes by them as the speed of the ride pumps adrenaline into the two mermen. The rest of the dolphins in the pod surround them, easily keeping up with the velocity.

“WOOO!!!” Reid yells out into the ocean. “This is so much fun!”

“Ah-ha!” Kale hollers with a massive, open smile. “This is actually pretty sweet!”

He turns to his right, spotting his friend. “See? I told you!”

“No one on Instagram would believe me if I told them about this without pictures!” Kale blurts out over the rushing of the water. Darn it, I left my phone on shore.

“WOOO-HOOO!” Reid bellows again, taking in the thrill of the ride. His eyes then automatically land ahead, quickly spotting a familiar, yet surprising sight. “Wait! Is that Doctor Pat?”

“Pat?” Kale gazes ahead.

Sure enough, Nolan floating yards away from them with a bewildered expression at them.

Reid quickly lets out a quick whistle.

Instantly, the dolphins halt their propelling, now floating in their pod.

Reid lets go of the dorsal fin, Kale swiftly following him, and faces the dolphins. He whistles at them cordially.

The dolphins squeak happily in response then swim off by them in their trail.

Kale follows the disappearing pod with his eyes, a warm smile coming across his face. “Thank you!” Then a confused expression comes across his face. “I just thanked dolphins,” he mutters to himself.

“Doctor Pat!” Reid cries out, darting over to his other friend. He immediately halts in front of him, quickly spotting his new addition:

In place of Nolan’s legs is now a glamorous misty rose-coloured tail swaying to the water.

An excited expression comes across his face. “Yay, you joined the club!” He holds out his contrasting cobalt blue fin toward him. “Tail buddies!”

Nolan immediately blurts out, “WE WERE LOOKING FOR YOU GUYS EVERYWHERE WE'RE HAVING LUNCH!!!”

Reid stares at him in shock.

Kale glides over to him, letting out an embarrassed chuckle while running his hand through his waving hair. “Sorry, we, uh, got turned into mermaids—”

“—mermen,” Reid corrects matter-of-factly.

“Yeah.” Kale flicks his eyes at each of the three tails in sight. “As you can see.”

“Figures.” Nolan cooly crosses his sparsely-tattooed arms. “I would've never guessed. At least I found you guys.”

Reid instantly throws his hands out and hooks each one around each friend, pulling them close to him for a massive hug. “Yay, we're reunited!”

Nolan pats his bare back with a warm smile. “Thank goodness. Now—” He pulls away from him, breaking the hug for the three, and faces the two. “—how do you get this tail off?” He holds his tail out toward the two.

Kale shrugs. “I asked myself the same thing.”

“And that's why we're explorin’ the ocean!” Reid spins around with his hands up toward the surface.

“To a find a way to get our legs back?” Nolan asks, eyeing him.

“Nooo...” Reid halts his spinning, facing him. “...to be mermen, since we can't seem to find a way.”

Nolan gazes at him solemnly. “But the others are waiting—”

“Should we tell them?” Kale cuts in, turning to him with scrunched eyebrows.

Reid aimlessly waves his hand once in front of him. “Nah, let's go exploring more!”

“I agree,” Nolan pipes in, “I don't want them to see me like this.” He begins swimming away at a steady speed, brushing past the two. “Besides, their sandwiches were really tempting; I hated it.”

“Okay!” Kale turns around and swims after his friend.

Reid quickly bolts after the two with a massive grin. “Yahoo, more ocean explorin’!”
