Dinner

Pulling into his spot in the parking lot, Adam ran out and opened Liz's car door offering her his hand. She gladly took it, smiling up at him.
"So I'm guessing I'll just have to get used to never opening my own doors when you're around?"
"That's right." He smiled, not moving his hand from hers.
She noticed that he hadn't let go, but didn't question it enjoying the contact. They headed up the elevator and she remembered the last time they were in this position, smiling to herself. When they reached his apartment, he opened the door gesturing for her to go in first. She looked around and noticed the quiet, turning to him.
"Kick Dougie out for the night?"
He chuckled closing the door behind him. "Damn right I did."
She smirked and turned around walking in a little further, "What, you plan on getting lucky tonight or something?"
Before she could move further, she felt him behind her, his hands lightly placed on her hips. "Definitely haven't written it off." She felt him kiss the top of her head before he walked away heading towards the kitchen. Since she wasn't expecting that gesture from him, she stood frozen to the spot for a second watching him walk to the kitchen. She was snapped out of her daze when she heard him say,
"How do you feel about chicken?"
She walked to the kitchen, sitting on one of the stools at the island, "well, I haven't exactly thought about my emotional attachment to the chicken if that's what you're asking." She smirked as he looked up at her.
"Not exactly what I was asking, no." He replied with a chuckle.
She smiled, "chicken sounds delicious."
"Good, 'cause my mom taught me one way to cook chicken and I promise it will be the best thing you've ever tasted."
She squinted her eyes at him, "a hockey player cooking me the BEST chicken I've ever tasted… I don't have much faith."
"That's okay, I love to prove people wrong." He smirked and turned back to the stove, as she hopped off the stool coming over beside him.
"What can I do to help?"
He looked down at her with an eyebrow raised and turned her pointing her back to the stools, "you can sit down and wait for dinner to get cooked."
She turned back around to face him with her hands on her hips, "well, you see that doesn't fly with me! I'm not going to sit here and watch you work while I do diddly squat."
He looked at her, a small smile spreading across his face as he took in the determined look on her face and hands on her hips.
"Fine, you can come over here and chop veggies."
A satisfied smile appeared on her face and she walked in front of him taking her place at the counter. "Thank you."
Shaking his head, he chuckled as she picked up the knife and started to cut up one of the peppers he had on the counter.
"So are you always this hard headed?"
She looked over her shoulder at him, standing at the fridge pulling a couple more things out, "hard headed?"
He chuckled again putting his hands up. "I just want to know what I'm getting myself into!"
She chuckled too, "if I remember correctly, who was the one who invited me over?"
He shut the fridge and walked over to the counter placing the things in his hands on top before walking over to stand in front of her, "exactly, and so far I'm liking what I'm getting myself into." He smiled lightly and leaned down kissing her.
It had only been just over a day since they last kissed, but she had forgotten how amazing his lips felt against hers. Placing the knife down on the counter behind her, she moved her hands up to rest at the base of his neck, her fingers lightly toying with the hair there.
Loving the feeling of her fingers at the base of his neck, he pulled her closer to him wrapping his arms around her, kissing her harder. The pair stayed like that for several minutes before Liz pulled away and looked up at him.
"Dinner's never going to get cooked at this rate."
He smirked at her, leaning down to steal another kiss, "but this is much more fun than cooking."
"Well, if you do prove me wrong cooking wise, I'm going to have to repay you somehow…" She smirked, turning back to the cutting board she was working on picking up her knife and going back to her pepper.
He softly groaned, turning to the other counter working on the chicken. "You keep that talk up and we may never get to dinner."
She smirked and raised her leg up behind her to kick him lightly in the butt. "Men, one track minds, I swear."
Not turning to look at her, he chuckled, "I can't help it when you're around."
"Man, you are just full of the compliments tonight aren't you McQuaid?"
"And the night's young, Erin."
About an hour later, after a lot of joking around and a few stolen kisses, the pair sat at the island with dinner sitting in front of them. Liz looked down at it before looking over to Adam.
"Moment of truth, this could make or break your evening." She couldn't help the smirk that was fighting its way onto her face as she spoke.
"Well, if the chicken is shit, I'll find a way to make it up to you." He winked and she chuckled before turning back to her food picking up her fork and knife.
"One track mind, I tell ya."
He repeated her actions and picked up his own fork and knife cutting off a piece of the chicken as she did the same. She looked over at him with the chicken on her fork and spoke, "on three?"
"Sure."
"Three, two, one." They both popped their chicken into their mouths and Liz began to chew.
"Holy shit." She said with her mouth still full, as she swallowed she looked over at Adam who was smirking. "You need to thank your mother for teaching you how to make this, because it might just be the best chicken I've ever tasted."
Adam put his utensils down, putting his hand behind his ear. "I'm sorry, what was that? The hockey player didn't quite hear you."
Cutting off another piece of her chicken she rolled her eyes, "Oh whatever, just take the compliment!"
He chuckled, "well thank you, I'm glad you like it." He couldn't help himself as he leaned over to place a kiss on her temple.
She sighed to herself at his action, loving all the little gestures he was making this evening. She had never had this kind of attention paid to her and she was going to soak it all up, unsure of how long it would last.
They ate the rest of their dinner in relative silence, finishing up and moving to the living room, deciding that the couch was much comfier than the stools. Sitting on the couch, Adam looked over to her, taking her in as she ran her fingers through her hair. When he snapped out of his trance, he put his arm on the back of the couch. "So, tell me about Liz."
"Oh god," she chuckled, "the awkward life story time. Well, my name is Liz, incase you didn't know, and I'm from a small town in Southern Ontario."
Before she could continue he cut her off, "wait, you're from Canada too?"
She nodded, "born and raised!"
He smiled and nodded, with an impressed look on his face and kept silent so she could continue.
"Uhm, I donno," she chuckled lightly, "there's not much else very interesting about me."
"I'm sure that's not true. Why did you move to Boston?"
"Change of scenery, small towns just aren't really my thing right now. I like the business of the big cities, makes me feel more a part of something. Didn't choose Boston exactly , just applied to as many Universities that they would let me and something stuck out about Boston. Maybe it's the accent." She joked, doing her best imitation of a Boston accent at the end.
He laughed at her failed attempt, "I think you need to practice that one a bit more. Alright, so small town Ontario, moved to Boston on a whim for school, which is…"
"Ah, yes. Nursing. Nursing at UMass."
A smirk grew on his face as she said that. "A nurse, that's hot."
She chuckled, "I hear that a lot, it's not so hot when I'm wiping shit though." she smirked as his face turned to a frown.
"Yeah, that's not so great." he chuckled at the end of his sentence.
"So, now it's time for you to tell me aaaaaalll about Adam."
"Okay, from Canada. PEI."
"Land of the potato." She interjected.
He chuckled, "heck yes. Moved a couple times for hockey, ended up in Boston, and if it were up to me, I'd never leave."
She nodded and pulled her feet up under her on the couch, "Why hockey?"
"Wasn't really my choice, parents put me in it to make more friends. Ended up loving it though."
She smiled, "man, you owe your parents big time!"
"Trust me, my mom reminds me of that one." He chuckled and scooted closer to her. "So how do you feel about hockey players?"
She smirked up at him, "well the figure skater in me hates them with a passion, but the other half of me is pretty fond of a certain defenseman." She scooted closer to him.
"Figure skater, huh? Also hot. And you know that it's only proper for figure skaters to end up with hockey players, right?"
"Oh, that's what I've been told." She replied, still smirking.
"I know you said you had tests you needed to study for, do you need to get home or can you sacrifice an evening?" The pair were dangerously close at this point, and she stared at him for a second before responding.
"Well, it's only anatomy. I think I can sacrifice one night."
He closed the gap between them kissing her hard, moving one hand to the back of her head tangling his fingers in her hair. After a minute, he pulled away looking at her.
"Well, I like to think I've got a pretty good anatomy, and I'm more than willing to let you study me."
She smirked, kissing him quickly, "the things you're willing to sacrifice," she chuckled.
He smirked, "who said studying can't be fun?" Closing the gap between them again he captured her lips pushing her down on the couch underneath him. Her hands moved to the back of his neck, resuming their usual spot as she sighed into the kiss.
"I should study like this more often."

You aren't a horrible person!! Life happens, and it's okay to have taken a break. But now, if you're back, I'm so happy for updates to start coming back!!
I think that in a traditional sense, an engagement/wedding/etc. would come next. That's always an option to explore for Adam and Liz. If not, maybe just some good old-fashioned drama (car accident? hockey collision? sick baby?? ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES)
Honestly, I'll be happy to read anything about the McQuaids at this point. Just take your time and things ideas may come! :) :) :)
