Trick or Treat? How About A Trick!
Evelyn stared at a small record player set up. It was emitting a recording of Jonathan’s scream and it was driving her insane. Brooke darted forward and unlatched the player, shutting off the repetitive scream that came every so often.
“Crap!” Evelyn exclaimed, hitting her head in frustration with her "palm." (Cause she's still Black Hawk.)
“How did they know that the scream would bring you here?” Kelly piped up.
Evelyn shook her head and folded her arms. “They must know me better than I thought. I mean, my hearing is better than my vision and honestly, my ears picked up the scream, I didn’t see him. Drat!”
“Well, your Hawk Hearing has deceived you,” Brooke stated, putting her hands on her hips. “These Russian guys--”
“They aren’t Russian! I Russian and I not do this!” Val complained, throwing his arms down to his sides.
“Nice English, Valeri,” Evelyn commented.
“Thanks,” He beamed with pride, too naive to catch the sarcasm involved.
“Sarcasm, Valeri, you got to get a better handle on that. I thought you taught him sarcasm?” Evelyn asked, shooting a look at her friend Brooke, who rolled her eyes.
“I did, but he’s impossible.”
Val was grinning cluelessly. “You speak Russian and I understand this “sarcasm” better.” He raised his head up proudly.
“Anyway, where are we? And why would the bad guys lead us here?” Kelly questioned, looking around and holding her wand at ready. “Is it a trap?”
Evelyn looked around too. She wasn’t really sure. She decided to try and use her vision to see, but something was preventing her from activating it and her hearing was reduced to normal as well. Only her wings and suit remained to signal her as a superhero.
“Dang it, I can’t activate my vision or hearing!”
“You can’t? How come?”
“I don’t know, I just can’t do anything. Kelly, can you make a fire?”
Kelly flicked her wand about and at first created a stream of fire, but it grew and exploded in front of her. She yelped in fright and stepped back, as it vanished into still air. So, something was wrong, there was some kind of spell cast over the building...and...it was a trap!
"Someone must be using what Brad told me as, Power Cancellation Field or Limitation Inducement! It's meant to block our powers or strip them. He might have also charmed the place too with it."
Evelyn glanced back to find that Brooke and Val were both missing. She looked back at Kelly who shrugged and came over to her.
“Where’d they go?” Kelly asked.
“I don’t know, but I don’t like it. C’mon, we gotta go find them.”
“EVELYN, HELP!!” two voices screamed in unison.
“GET YOUR HANDS OFF OF ME!!” one of the voices, a female’s spoke.
Evelyn and Kelly darted off into the building, heading deeper inside. They emerged into a vast, empty warehouse room and in the center, they saw Brooke and Val bound together, back-to-back in chairs.
Evelyn flapped her wings, but they didn’t produce any wicked wind, just flapped at random speeds. Both heroes (well, one hero-in-training) were powerless, but they knew they had to attempt to save their friends and get out of there. They had to find Jonathan and Patrick. Both rushed forward, but skidded to a halt as four men, all dressed in black emerged from the shadows to the side.
One of them, the leader, stepped forward. He spoke in Russian, but Evelyn recognized him. He had a scraggly beard and a pair of brownish eyes. His hair was straw like, but short and he looked like a caveman. Also, he was normally a hockey player for the Washington Capitals.
“Ovechkin!”
“Yeah, that’s my name,” he said in a thick accent.
Val and Brooke struggled to break free from their bonds. Kelly narrowed her eyes, adjacent to Evelyn.
“Such pretty friends you have, Black Hawk.” Alex Ovechkin rounded the two hostages he had and stopped before Brooke, touching her chin.
“Don’t you touch me, Ovi!” Brooke snapped and jerked her head away.
“Tsk tsk, touchy, touchy.” He rounded to Val, who eyed him. “Nichushkin, right? Вы говорите России не так ли? (You speak Russian, right?)”
“Я делаю. Иди к черту. (I do. Go to hell.)”
“Не разговаривать с вашими старшими, Валерий.. (Don’t talk back to your elders, Valeri.)”
“Let me go.”
“Back to English, eh? Okay, well, no, no I’m not going to let you go, because you said some mean things to me on TV, Valeri.”
“Did not.”
“You did. You said Geno Malkin was the best Russian and Sergei Gonchar...not Ovi.”
“I no like you. Too showoff-ish.”
“Jamie Benn taught you that word right. He uses it to address Tyler Seguin as such.”
Alex reached out and grabbed Val by the neck. “Я начальник российской хоккейной игроков NHL. никто не лучше, чем я. Узнайте, что через головы, ник! (I am the Chief of the Russian Hockey Players in the NHL. No one is better than me. Get that through your head, sweetheart!)”
“Я никогда не хотел бы, чтобы вы, миновало! Вы означает и эгоистичных! Я с нетерпением ожидаю до развиваться. Вот и все. Получить более самостоятельно. (I will never like you, Ovechkin! You're mean and selfish! I look up to Malkin. That's it. Get over yourself.)”
“Gag him!” Alex ordered, walking off.
“No!” Brooke screamed.
“Ждать, что? (Wait, what?)” Val questioned.
“Я сказал "кляп” вас, (I said "gag" you,)” Alex sneered.
“Ovech--” Val began, before one of the men walked over to him and tied a cloth around his mouth. The blond fidgeted in place and shook his head back and forth.
Ovechkin laughed. “Much better, thank you Backs.”
Nicklas Backstrom nodded, but didn’t smile and went back to where he’d been standing. The other two men were Brendan Holtby and Brooks Orpik.
“Alright, what do you want, Ovechkin? You wanting a fight, cause I’ll knock you out so hard you’ll be slinking off back to Washington feeling butthurt!” Evelyn snapped.
Alex rounded his hostages and came forward toward the hero. “It’s not really what I want, you see, I’m just killing two birds with one stone, humiliating the Blackhawks and taking care of a small Russian problem.”
Val muffled an angry grunt in his direction.
The villainous Captain for the Washington Capitals spun to him. “I can’t understand you Valeri.” Then he turned back to the heroine. "Oh yes, I know all about your little "mission"...but see, I don't much care for Jonathan or Patrick or the Blackhawks, actually."
“Let them both go now, or I’ll--” Evelyn began to threaten.
“What? Scream like a hawk? Or beat me senseless? Maybe peck my eyes out?” Alex taunted. “You can’t, cause I know that I coated this place well. No powers allowed in here. Just old fashioned fighting.”
"So you did use PCF!!" Kelly exclaimed.
“Kelly, not now. But, Ovechkin, that's fine with me, I’m game for a fight.”
"No, Eve, you can't, he'll destroy you!" Kelly screamed.
"Don't care. He can try, but I refuse to go down without a fight and that includes a stupid Capital!" Evelyn clenched her fist and let it fly into Alex’s face, sending him stumbling backward.
He caught himself, before he collided with Brooke and Val and then his eyes flashed a brilliant red color and he charged at Evelyn, who held her ground, at ready. She halted him again and seized him, flinging him to the side, where he slammed against the far right side wall.
“Even without powers, I can still win. You know why Ovi? It’s because I have training and I’m ready for any case, even one where my powers won’t work, I can always rely on my fists. And also, bad guys never win.”
Evelyn and Kelly darted forward, cautious and threatening the henchman, who backed off. Kelly untied Brooke, while Evelyn untied Val and removed the cloth from his mouth.
“Thanks,” Val said and without thinking, threw his arms around the heroine.
“Uh, Valeri?” Evelyn questioned.
He pulled back and immediately blushed with embarrassment. “Sorry. I ashamed.” The redhead patted him on the back to let him know it was okay.
“C’mon let’s get outta here. We have to find Jonny and Patrick.”
Val’s POV
Val stood to the side, watching with horror, as his favorite superhero couldn’t even work her powers. He was absolutely horrified. And then all of the sudden, he felt a hand launch out from behind him and clamp firmly in place over his mouth. He was shocked and he yelped, as he was pulled backward.
He tried to scream for Evelyn...for Black Hawk...and he hoped that it wasn’t Vanek who had him. Luckily...or unluckily, it wasn’t him. The Dallas Star was roughly sat in a chair and bound to it. He saw Brooke being dragged in as well and then sat down, somewhere behind him. The ropes entangled around his hands and feet were scratchy and rough...like manila. Of course, naturally, he didn’t like it.
When he was helplessly bound in place, he looked up into the cold eyes of a familiar face.
“Hi there, Val.”
It was Alexander Ovechkin and beside him was Nicklas Backstrom. Immediately the winger for the Stars wondered what was going on. And he hoped that whatever it was, Evelyn found him soon.
And sure enough, as if on cue, she and Kelly burst into the room and came into sight. Val was relieved and thrilled, but then he remembered she didn’t have her powers. Ovechkin began talking to her and explaining what was going on. He couldn’t help but talk to him.
And then he had Backstrom gagged Val with a cloth, which again he didn’t like at all. He wanted it out and he wanted to be free. He had to have hope that Evelyn would win and save him, but Valeri Nichushkin wasn’t Jonathan Toews. Still, he had to have hope that she’d consider saving him.
If only just this once.
The Dallas forward was shocked when she agreed to fight Alex and ended up winning. He couldn’t believe it. Those fists...damn! She was a woman! She was amazing! She was the greatest superhero EVER! But she wasn’t his and it hurt.
Still, as she rescued him and then removed the gag from his mouth. He couldn’t help but embrace her. He was caught in the moment and he had to let her know that he was thankful and that he was in love. But he was ashamed to have ambushed her like that. It wasn’t right.
She was Jonathan Toews’, not his. Val had to live with that and he had to stop trying...but his heart, his heart just ached for her.
He really wanted her to be his heroine. Not Jonathan's. Not the Blackhawks. His.
Notes
FINALLY, I think I can say that I have a better outline with this and I can bring it back. Okay. Any comments geared towards the subject, plot, what's going to happen or why is this happening? should all wait until the end of the story, because I like answering and creating more questions, while also answering some questions along the way. I am hoping that when the answers come though for some things they aren't too late, but if they are, A Shruinger, you know how to contact me and let me know.
Anyway...
BOOM! Ovechkin's a villain! I'm not an Ovi fan. I just think he is like Subban and that he is cocky and arrogant, while at times humble, but mostly cocky and arrogant on the ice and he is show-off-ish.
Sidenote: Under Ovi's Wiki page, it says that he doesn't or didn't like Malky (Geno/Malkin) and that they were enemies and mad at each other, so naturally, I had to take that and twist it up somehow. :)
Next up: The Search for the Blackhawks Continues...Meanwhile, Jonathan reminisces about certain rescues ;)
