Battle For the Ice: The Great NHL War

Battle #12: Vladislav Namestnikov vs James van Riemsdyk

In the parking lot across from the United Center,

Vladislav Namestnikov (Vlad or Vladdy) faced his villain opponent, James van Riemsdyk (JVR), straddling one of the white chalked lines etched into the cement. The Maple Leaf was glowering at him, his eyes suddenly flashed a beady black color. He wore a Toronto Maple Leaf blue outfit with a dark jet black cape behind him, while the Lightning forward wore a black outfit with royal blue outlines and a silver spiral etched into the chest. He also had on matching black and blue boots with it. Vladdy kept his cool and stood his ground; his arrogance was too much for him to be scared and he wasn’t known to back down.

“So those are your powers JVR? You can change your eye color...that’s cute?” Vladdy scoffed, laughing to himself.

JVR shook his head and raised his hands up, producing black mist from his hands. He waved them in a rainbow-like motion and instantly they were surrounded by darkness. A thick black canopy that made Vladdy feel uncomfortable all of the sudden covered the lot and plunged them into absolute darkness.

“Umbrakinesis, Vladdy dear. You’re not scared of the dark are you?” JVR sneered.

“No…” the Tampa Bay forward choked out, attempting to disguise his fear. Truth was, when he was growing up...and he hated to admit it...but he was scared of the dark. And actually, the phobia had stayed with him. He always slept with a night light or had a light on. He hated to be scared like some little child but he was and though he played a tough guy on the ice, deep inside he was terrified of the night and its terrible darkness.

He couldn’t see a thing, so Vladdy just closed his eyes, raised his hands up and calmed his racing heart. He focused all of his energy inside of him and blasted a red beam of concentrated plasma out of his chest and hands. It shot across and lit up the darkness that encompassed him. However, it hadn’t hit JVR, who had moved and was snickering wickedly.

“Hold still, so I can blast you dammit!” Vladdy cried, snapping his eyes open finally and braving the darkness.

“Now why would I hold still for you Vladdy baby?!”

Vlad spun around, trying to locate JVR. Instead he got distracted and didn’t realize it until too late that black mist had wrapped around his arms and legs like binding ropes. Vlad looked down and began to struggle, trying to get free. He snapped his head up and came face-to-face with the Leaf. Vlad gasped in shock and watched the forward smirk evilly. JVR rounded the Lightning player, who grunted in distress and worked the darkness binding around him.

“How about you hold still Vladdy?” JVR snickered.

“Never! Let me go, so we can fight fairly!” the Russian centerman snapped.

“Oh, this isn’t fair enough for you? I mean you kind of egged me on and seemed ready to fight earlier...I mean these are my powers Namesy Boy. You shouldn’t egg people on you can’t handle!”

“You’re fricking tying me up with your stupid powers! How the hell can I fight back if I’m restrained?!” Vladdy spat. “Tell me how that is fair?!” All of his fear for the dark was gone, he was infuriated now and it was fueling his powers. In any second, he’d explode and wreck chaos.

“Oh, I’m sorry, are villain’s supposed to play fairly? I was under the impression that I CAN tie arrogant little Russian Lightning players up...strange.”

Vladdy screamed and glowed red. JVR stepped back as the misty bondage dissolved off of the hero. He smirked as Vlad began to twist his body around like he was hula-hooping. He moved his hips in a way that would make a dancer jealous.

Then bright orangish-red solar rings looped around him and shot off one-by-one at the villain. One landed at JVR’s feet, bursting into sparks. Another sliced through one of the lampposts in the lot. The top toppled over and crashed to the ground with a loud bang. More sparks came from that.

Vlad stood, steaming with anger and glowing brightly. He threw his hands out, able to see the villain now and blasted red energy plasma at him, hitting him squarely in the chest and sent the Maple Leaf flying backward.

“How’s that for chaos, Riemsy?”

JVR scrambled to his feet and spat on the ground. “I’d say you are perfectly fine in this fight, Vladdy. But I have the edge!” He instantly whipped up some black energy under his feet and levitated into the air, gliding toward Vlad, who shot red energy at him again. However this time, JVR dodged the plasma blasts and threw his hand out, creating another rope-like construct.

“Now who’s the arrogant ass, Riems?”

Vladdy saw JVR’s rope construct though and grabbed the end as it was whipped at him. He yanked it and tried to pull JVR to him, however the Leaf let it go and then quickly flicked his hand in a circle making it wrap around Vlad’s wrists, binding them together.

“Not again!” Vladdy screeched with frustration. “Dammit Riemsy LET ME GO!!”

“RAAAAHHHH!!!! SHUT UP!!” JVR blasted Vladdy full on in the chest with a dark pulse. “I’m sick of you telling me what to do and how to fight! I’ll cheat and fight how I damn well please!!”

Vladdy flew backward and hit the ground. He wriggled around, unable to get up, thanks to his wrists bound tightly together. And unfortunately it wasn’t like he could blast the darkness off of him this time.

“Riemsy, stop this madness and just let me go, please.”

“Please? Did I really reduce you to begging and pleading now? Vladdy...Vladdy...”

Vladdy stared up at the villain. He raised his bound wrists up and shot the plasma at the Leaf, who flew backward this time and hit the ground hard. Apparently he could actually activate his powers still, or maybe JVR was allowing him to activate for now. However JVR lassoed Vladdy’s ankles and pulled him along after him. He landed on the lot cement and flung the Lightning forward into the ground beside him.

“Ow!” Vlad cussed. “Was that necessary, you asshole?”

JVR scrambled to his feet and stomped over to Vlad, grabbing him by the collar of his outfit and yanked him up into the air. “Don’t you dare piss me off! I’m much stronger than you are and I will rip you to shreds you chaotic little Russian bastard!”

“Like you could!” Vlad snarled, kicking out and connecting with JVR’s face. He plummeted back to the ground and hit it again, the wind temporarily getting knocked out of him. But the dark bondage on his wrists vanished as JVR grabbed his face, shrieking with agony.

Vlad rapidly scrambled to his feet and faced JVR. He drove his knee into his opponent’s stomach, causing the Leaf to stop clutching his face. Landing on the ground, the wicked Toronto player stretched out his hand, encasing the Tampa Bay player in darkness. Then he flung his hand in the direction of a nearby pole and sent Vlad hurtling across the lot and into it.

The Lightning forward slammed into the pole and hit his head hard against the solid light fixture. He crashed to the ground, falling unconscious. JVR landed by the rubble and spat at Vlad, who suddenly threw his hand out and grabbed JVR’s ankle.

The hero yanked at the villain’s legs and pulled him down to the ground. Then they both got to their feet once more and Vlad blasted JVR right in the chest with his plasma. JVR skidded backward, carving deep furrows in the pavement of the parking lot.

JVR’s eyes glowed red inside of the black now. He stomped his foot on the ground in anger and drew up a black sword weapon from the darkness behind him. He swung it at Vlad, who ducked the weapon barely.

The lot burned around them, red, orange and black flames from a legacy of the battle. In the center of the chaotic area, JVR and Vladdy still battled it out. Their powers shattered anything and everything with proximity. They hammered each other with a ferocity usually reserved for wild animals. Punches, kicks and sword swipes flew out in a flurry. Neither man, the hero nor the villain, was willing to give an inch.

It was essentially a fight to the death.

JVR’s body was nearly wholly demonic shadows, only his glowing black and crimson eyes remained. On the other side, Vladdy’s skin burned a bronze, his hair alight with orange flames, his eyes a bright sapphire blue and his hands a red.

The men clashed again and again, sending shockwaves of power throughout the parking lot. They showed no signs of stopping anytime soon and they were pushing the bounds every now and again.

Soon the two of them paused, the Maple Leaf had the Lightning player by the throat and they were nearly exhausted. However Vladdy was still passionate about wanting to win and not let the villain win. He still seemed to have enough energy for one major “Defeat or Glory” attack.

“Let’s end this!” Vladdy exclaimed with a growl.

As Vladdy swung a fist at him, JVR laughed and vanished in a swirl of shadows. The Tampa Bay Lightning player hit nothing but air. From the left, the Leaf’s darkness engulfed fist smashed into Vladdy’s jaw. The young Russian reacted instantly and swung again, only JVR disappeared again.

A sudden sharp stinging on the back of his neck after a slashing sound announced where he had teleported off to. And Vladdy’s backwards kick was an instant too late. JVR had teleported off again, pushing his teleportation ability to its limits and delivered a barrage of attacks from every angle, never staying in one spot for more than a second.

Vladdy twirled around, stuck in the limbo and only able to scream helplessly. Then the attack stopped and the hero crashed to the ground, weakly slumping onto his face. He remained there, slumped over on all fours, facing the ground.

“What’s the matter Vladdy dear?”

Vlad choked on the air, but slowly got back to his feet. He spun around and his fist finally connected a blow with all the force of a nuclear bomb. Then he whipped his leg around, lifting it as high as he could make it go and rammed it into JVR’s forehead. JVR crashed to the ground now and his powers dissipated as he lost consciousness temporarily.

As soon as he recovered, Vladdy had recovered completely and powered up his own powers. He blasted JVR nonstop. But the villain shielded himself from the attack and overpowered the plasma blasts. Then he shoved Vlad backward and whipped another black lasso around him, catching his arms and he tugged the forward back to him and flung him into the pole. There he wrapped more darkness ropes around him over his mouth.

Vlad wasn’t pleased and he wriggled in the dark tethers, muffling grunts of unhappiness. He tried to power up and he glowed briefly before it was suffocated by the blackness. It was almost like the darkness was weakening him. He jerked in frustration, while JVR just laughed at him.

“Well, I got to go sweetie, but maybe one of your little friends has some kind of light manipulation power...otherwise, farewell forever, Vladdy. I commend your attempt to defeat me but Kessy says I’m too powerful and he’s right!” JVR stepped forward and raked a hand through Vlad’s hair. “You were a promising young Russian...too bad you were too arrogant and Riemsy had to ruin that.”

Vlad muffled some angry comment at him and the Leaf chuckled, slapped Vlad’s cheek and spun around. He flicked his hand and the black sword construct dissolved as well as the thick cloud of darkness that he’d hung about the air to cloak them. Instead he just cloaked the area where Vlad was attached to the pole.

The Lightning player screamed and jerked again, but JVR vanished from his sight and the lot. Vladdy looked around, desperately hoping someone would find him. But in the meantime, he had to try to get free himself, he could rely on hope.

At least he could see ahead of him and to the side of him now. But could he be seen?
