Wake Me Up
Chapter 6
"Faster girls, come on! Feel the pain!" Jackie shouted to her teammates as they skated lines. She heard the groans of pain but they pushed at it.
She was skating with them and was already far ahead of them. No one ever could beat her at skating. She was one of the fastest skaters in the Junior's league.
she finished in 30 seconds and waited for her teammates to finish. She leaned against her hockey stick and when her teammates had finally finished she told them to go get a drink. They skated up to the bench and while the other girls were getting a drink, Jackie secretly checked her phone.

Jackie took off her helmet and massaged her temples. She could feel the sweat on her face and on the back of her neck. All she wanted to do was go home and take a shower. But she couldn't. She had a team to coach. And she had goalie tryouts right after this practice.
"Alright girls, I think tomorrow we are going to practice our rush play, it's not looking to good right now." Danica rolled her eyes.
"I think it's fine the way it is." Jackie narrowed her eyes on her. "We'll your not the captain and since your so narrow-minded you don't see what I see." Danica skated up next to Jackie and looked down at her. Jackie did a gulp. Danica was at least 4 inches taller then Jackie and when she was on skates, forget about it.
"Hey we're teammates, we don't need to beat the shit out of each other," Lori the team's center said. Jackie skated backwards.
"She's right, now we all need to get ready for the goalie tryouts, lemme tell you what I got planned. . ."
Chirp! Chirp! Jackie blew her whistle to signal the girls to shoot. Lori went for the five hole but the goalie in the net, stopped it effortlessly.
"Nice save Becky! Keep it up!" Jackie shouted to the goalie in the net. Most of the girls that showed up seemed promising, but so far, none have been able to stop Jackie's slapshot to top right corner. Danica took a quick wrist shot and Becky stopped it. Danica skated back to the bench, looking pissed.
It gave Jackie joy to see Danica get snuffed away from a goal.
After a few more shots, Jackie stopped the drill. She called her teammates back to the bench.
"Who do you guys think is the best two so far?" Jackie asked, taking a swig of water.
"I really think Kellie is good, she can stop almost everything," Lori said. Danica laughed.
"Kellie? She couldn't stop shit! I liked Olivia, she was great." Jackie thought about it. She looked at the small group of hopeful goalies. Everyone of them seemed like all stars, except for one girl, Maria.
"I liked Maria," Jackie said suddenly. Her teammates looked at her in shock.
"Maria? Jackie your smart about a lot of things, and usually right, but this one, I don't think so," Angel their left wing said uncertainly. Their was a mutter of agreement. Jackie did a huff.
"I don't want the girl that has the most skill and will have a big head. I want the girl that will work hard and try to be the best she can be." Angel shuffled her skates. Jackie knew she felt uncomfortable because Angel was once not to good herself. She was usually on the fourth line. But from perserverence, she managed to make it to first line.
"I have made my desicion on who I want our two final goalies to be," Jackie announced. Before she skated away, Danica stopped.
"I don't see why we don't just take both then, look what happened when we only have one goalie on the team." Jackie had to admit, she had a point there. But Jackie didnt want to have another person on the team who wouldn't play. She felt horrible when some of her teammates never got to play for some games.
"Shut up, I make the choices on this team," Jackie said simply. Without another word, she skated over to the goalies and smiled.
"I want to thank you all for trying out but I am going to call two names, those two names I call, will stay here and will be doing a scrimmage with my team. Whichever goalie is better, we'll take her." Jackie took a deep breath.
"Maria Hathway and Kellie Olsen." She watched the look of excitement cross Maria and Kellie's face, but depression sweep over the other goalies.
"Thank you all for trying out and I hope you guys have the best career ahead of you." she gave the other girls time to pack up and when they had all gone, Jackie began to speak.
"Okay, here are the teams for this scrimmage, Team one, Maria goalie, Danica defenseman, Carrie defenseman, Angel Right wing, Penny Left wing, and I'll be playing center. I want Sam, Katy, Andrea, Bri and Sydney to be team ones second line. That leaves the rest of you for team two."
In a matter of minutes the scrimmage had begun. Jackie was feeling confident. She had won every face off and had a few good checks. The only problem was, by the end of the third period, the score was tied.
They went into overtime and still had no goal. A shootout was coming the goalies' way. Jackie drank her water and then quickly began to talk to her team.
"Kellie isn't to hot on her glove side so try to give it your all for shooting there. Also, don't try to get fancy, she usually can read what your going to do then. " her team nodded. Jackie then went over to Maria, who unfortunately was getting out shined by Kellie.
"I'm gonna tell you something Maria, my team doesn't have faith in you. but you know who does? Me. So I want you to go out there an stop every puck that comes your way. Don't give up you hear me?" Maria grinned.
"Thanks Jackie."
They were in the seventh round of the shootout. Maria had listened to Jackie and had made astounding save after save. Kellie was doing the same.
"Angel your up," Jackie ordered. Angel skated up to the center of the ice and waited for Jackie to blow the whistle.

Instead of making a beeline for the net, Angel took a different approach. She started to skate from side to side, to try and fake out Kellie. Jackie watched as Kellie's head moved, watching Angel. All of a sudden, Angel wound up and made a hard shot to the top right shelf. Kellie flung her body into the air, but it was to late. Angel had scored. Angel threw off her gloves and screamed. Jackie was so proud of her. Now if only Maria could make this next save.
Karen on team two skated up to the middle. Jackie held her breath. Karen was a good shooter. whenever she went out onto the ice she usually had a couple of shots on goal. Jackie blew her whistle And watched Karen. She took a different approach. She started to stick handle the puck, this way and that. She was getting to fancy, Jackie thought.
Then it happened. Karen skated to close to Maria and Maria used her stick, and shoved the puck out of Karen"s reach. Jackie let out a roar of excitement. her teammates skated over to Maria, and hugged her and patted her helmet. Out of the corner of Jackie's eye, she saw Kellie skate over to the bench and throw her helmet down. Jackie did a smirk.
After it had finally buzzed down everyone gathered around in the middle of the ice. Kellie had left without a word.
"Let's take this moment to congratulate our new goaltender, Maria!" There was a loud commotion of appreciation.
"You have showed that you are worthy to play with us and your also one hell of a good sportsmanship. that's what I like in a player. Congratulations, we have practice tomorrow at 8AM, lets have our new player break us out." They all put their hands in the middle.
"USA on three!" Maria screamed.
"One, two, three, USA!" They shouted together.
As Jackie began to skate back to the bench, Danica shouted after her.
"How do you think it was. Sleeping with Jonathan Toews!" Jackie stopped dead. The whole ice house had gone silent. Jackie felt her blood boil. Danica had crossed the line. in one swift movement, Jackie had Danica in a headlock and was trying to punch every bit of her. all of her frustrations she just took out on Danica. Danica was quick to react though. She then got Jackie to release her grip and then she was the one pummeling her. Jackie felt her nose break as Danica's fist made contact.
"you fucking bitch," Jackie swore, clawing at Danica. Before she could make another attempt to kill her though, Jackie felt herself being pulled off of Danica.
"is this really how we want Maria to see us as a team? Always fighting? Lori asked, breathless. Jackie coughed. She could feel the hot, sticky blood drip down her face.
"Your right, I got carried away," Jackie said sourly. Without another word. Jackie skated over to the bench and grabbed her stuff. She looked at her phone and then remembered the text Hannah had sent her. Without thinking, she unlocked her phone and sent a two worded text message to Hannah.
Im in.
