Battle For the Ice: The Great NHL War

Battle #7: Gabriel Landeskog vs Patrick Kaleta

At the Swedish House in the Chicago Olympic Village,

“You’re such a bloody show-off!” Gabriel Landeskog stood facing his opponent, Patrick Kaleta. They stood directly facing each other with nothing separating except thin air. Gabriel stared at the villain, who was playing around with a Zippo lighter, producing a fire flame from it and then making it disappear again. A sudden anger rose up in him at the sight of the man. The despicable goon! He’s nothing but a threat and a rival! He must be destroyed, even if he is a hockey player like yourself! You can do this Gabriel.

Gabriel was wearing a long-sleeved black leather jacket over a black tank top with black jean pants. And he wore black boots and gloves on his hands and feet. He stood at the ready. Kaleta, on the other hand, wore a long-sleeved red leather jacket over a navy blue t-shirt and black pants. He had on his classic smug smirk.

Suddenly Gabriel leapt forward out of this spot and shot ice from his hands at Kaleta, who frowned and brought up his hands, shooting out fire to push the ice away. The two energies met and clashed with each other, shooting upward in the middle. A mixture of ice and fire. Kaleta quickly stepped forward, getting a better position and grip on his powers.

It reminded both of them of something like an arena, a small space clear of people so that two can fight while everyone watched from a distance, never interfering. Except no one was watching or cheering them on. It was just themselves and they were both furious.

Gabriel shot out ice and pushed against Kaleta's fire, but the villain, in return, pushed Gabriel's ice. The ice and fire met in the middle between the two, setting up a steam. Both pushed fiercely against each other.

Sweat ran down the two superhumans' faces as they pushed against each other's powers. Kaleta started pushing Gabriel's ice away. Kaleta gained more ground and he stepped forward. Gabriel panted as he tried to keep the fire away from him with his ice. Kaleta gained more and more ground, stepping forward and pushing the ice down. He pushed Gabriel down to the ground, gritting his teeth.

The only sound heard by them was the steam, the soft whisper of the ice, and the roaring fire. It was war.

Suddenly, Gabriel collapsed, accidentally stopping the ice flow. Kaleta quickly drew back his fire. He stared at the panting ice man on the cement. Gabriel gasped for air as he lay on the ground. He wasn’t as strong in his power like the wicked ex-Sabre was. Kaleta looked at him calmly.

“You shouldn’t bite off more than you can chew, Gabe the Babe! Whatsamatter, is my pyrokinesis too strong for your glaciokinesis?” Kaleta sneered, spitting to the ground. He controlled a kindled flame on his palm.

Kaleta knelt beside Gabriel Landeskog, the Swedish Colorado Avalanche captain. "Gabriel, I have no grudge against you, but you are weak and I was hand-picked by Avery to go against you. We were never friends and we will never be. None of you hockey heroes. The one thing that separates us, is our beliefs. You go your way and I'll go mine, got it?"

Gabriel blinked, confused. Kaleta stood and offered his hand. Gabriel took it and Kaleta hauled him to his feet. Gabriel frowned at Kaleta, not sold by Kaleta’s niceness at all. Kaleta was as sly as a fox and tricky. But here he was, no tricks or meanness or sudden surprises. Just niceness…almost fairness.

"Why?" Gabriel asked, still keeping up his guard.

"Why what?" Kaleta asked.

"You aren't that type of person. I know you Kaleta, you’re-"

"Gabriel…shut up." Kaleta cut in. “I’m not going to hurt you.” He sort of creepily smiled.

Gabriel shook his head, amazed. "Don't you even want to question me for attacking you?"

Kaleta laughed wickedly as Gabriel turned his back and began to walk away. "No. You’re a fool…haven’t you learned anything, Gabriel Landeskog! You’re so easy to manipulate!"

Gabriel blinked. "What do you…?" He spun around, just as a blast of hot, blazing fire shot out and hit him square in the chest. The hero stumbled backward, unprepared and stunned. The fire stopped and Gabriel gripped his seared arm, dropping to his knees.

Kaleta's face darkened. "Gabriel, you believe whatever you want to believe. That is all that separates us. I have to stick to my beliefs or else what would I be? A lost wandering person. Duh. We just don't believe in the same things, that's all. Face it. And now, I’m going to kill you!"

“The hell you are, you pyrokinetic bastard!” Gabriel causally crossed his arms, his crystal blue eyes shimmering under the lights; his muscles tightening as his chest raised then fell with each breath. “Bring it then, Kaleta!”

Kaleta shot a burst of fire at him once again and intensified the heat pounding against Gabriel’s ice, which shot out from his hands. Gabriel grunted from the effort to keep his ice in check, but he was soon engulfed in the fire and flames. He could feel it burning him. He began to scream in agony.

“That’s right, ice boy, you’re no match for my fire!”

Suddenly Gabriel focused all of his energy and solidified into a human icicle. His entire body, clothes, hair, even the sunglasses he wore were freezing into a sleek, smooth, solid ice. He grabbed Kaleta’s wrists and headbutted him. "Kaleta, you're an ass." Gabriel snarled.

“And you’re an ice fool.” Kaleta shook his head and kneed Gabriel in the stomach at the same time.

Gabriel yelped and stumbled back. But he recovered quickly, maintaining his ice look.

Chaos had broken out all around him; he couldn't believe that he was actually gonna fight another hockey player, "Don't worry Landeskog," he heard the words from Kaleta's mouth, "I'll clear up everything in a sec."

Gabriel's blood boiled. He couldn't stand it, not anymore, and while Gabriel hardly registered the change, Kaleta gasped in shocked awe as Gabriel clenched his fists. "You wanna fight Kaleta, so be it!" Gabriel's fists shot forward and blasted what can only be described as pure cold energy, not the snowy mist Gabriel produced but pure flowing ice. The blast hit Kaleta square in the chest knocking the wind out of him and he was sure he felt a rib crack; his pain only multiplied with shock when Gabriel manipulated the ice flow to send Kaleta spinning into the air.

"Dammit!" Kaleta cussed as he twisted his bodyweight to turn himself around in the air, blasting a column of fire into the rising ice tower. Using his mutant ability to manipulate the flames, Kaleta made rings of fire encircle his waist and legs, keeping him aloft, while sending the rest of the fire careening towards his former friend.

Gabriel never even flinched, his right arm shooting a column of ice to disperse the forthcoming fire while his left hand swept wide with a wave of frost to snuff out any surprise ammunition Kaleta could pull. "You'll have to do better than that Kaleta!" His hands pointed to the ground and Gabriel began to move into the air, "surfing" on a wave of ice.

Kaleta smirked, willing the rings of fire to fly away so he floated through the air and then plummeted downward, the rings following and wrapping back around him so that he was inverted in the air about halfway down Gabriel's latest move. "Trust me Landeskog," His hands spun, forming his armband flamethrowers' newest spew of fire into a whirling buzz saw that he sent straight for the base of the ice plinth, "You haven't seen anything yet!"

Gabriel fell, the ice crumbling beneath him; he was caught off balance and couldn't recover. He smacked into the ground with a sickening thud, rolling over onto his knees he coughed and blood dripped from his lip. He heard Kaleta touch back down to the ground softly, heard the firm footsteps move closer to him and felt the hard kick to his gut that sent him sideways into the fetal position.

"What can I say Gabriel, it's been fun and you've been a real friend, but all good things must come to an end…" The flamethrower shot forward, and Kaleta manipulated to form three claws of flame, mimicking Wolverine's adamantium ones, a sadistic grin crossing his face. It was time for the kill. Kaleta stood towering over Gabriel, a grim smirk across his lips.

It was an interesting site, seeing this Gabriel, made all of blue and white, drip red from the mouth. And granted, he was bleeding too. Part of him felt sort of sorry. Not Kaleta though. Kaleta had become one of the bad guys, heartless, a regular killer. But whatever part of him that was still someone human felt sorry. Not for the Gabriel, he was his enemy, and idealistic fool. But the part that was Patrick Kaleta did feel sorry for whatever was left of Gabriel Landeskog.

The two were both hockey players and they all had always been there for each other. All of them, each and every single hockey player in the NHL. But now, they were locked in combat, a fight that looked like it was going to be to the death. No, he thought, It wasn't going to end with a stab in the back. This was going to end face to face, the way it had to.

Gabriel felt Kaleta grab him under the arm and hoist him to his feet. The two locked eyes, and while Gabriel's were of translucent ice, they still conveyed emotion. His sunglasses had been knocked to the side when he hit the ground and now the two mutants locked stares. Gabriel knew, somehow, that he wasn't looking at the Kaleta, he was looking at Kaleta. And he knew that no matter how he tried, how high he built the walls around his heart. That it wasn't the Gabriel staring back at Kaleta, it was Gabriel Landeskog, the Avalanche captain.

Kaleta broke the silence, his expression showing that this was no longer a game. "Gabriel, you lost. But I have to tell you one thing..."

"Why should I talk to you, Kaleta? You’re a traitor to the NHL and to me.”

"Because, there was a time that you used to call me Patrick, not Kaleta. And the NHL betrayed me!" He shot a burst of fire at Gabriel and left him rolling on the ground of their arena in agony.

“Finish me off like a man,” Gabriel wailed. “Kaleta. KALETA!!”

Kaleta smirked to himself and cackled under his breath as he walked away from the scene. When he vanished, Gabriel deflated and lay on the grass. His internal icy interior had actually cooled the fire on his body and he was just a dirty, scarred and steaming mess. But he was alive and Kaleta hadn’t finished him. Yet. But Gabriel vowed to himself that he’d get Kaleta back as soon as he healed up and was healthy once again. Kaleta wouldn’t win….EVER!!

Notes

Ugh! Sorry it's been awhile, I got an idea away from the computer and couldn't write it down, then I forgot said idea and I couldn't figure out what I was doing. On top of that was busyness. But hey, vacation's here so I finally got to it. I'm gonna try to have a second chapter up today as well, but don't expect it until WAY later.
Anyway, Landy vs Kal. :)
This was probably the easiest one yet, just cause...fire and ice, how cliche? Haha. But yeah Landy got his ass handed to him by Pyr--Kaleta. :P
This was also one of my fav X-Men battles: Iceman vs Pyro!
Oh, so I know that some of these characters will run hand-in-hand with Arrow Hawk stuff and Flight, ignore that for now, because I am going to be connecting these. :) Also, this one is before codenames, so don't worry those codenames are coming up soon. ;)
So, this is pre-Iceshot. ;)

Next up: Nesty vs PK Subban
