Battle For the Ice: The Great NHL War

Battle #3: Jamie Benn vs Roberto Luongo

Jamie Benn entered his dramatic arena, which was the abandoned-at-the-moment football field for the Chicago Bears (Soldier Field). He stepped onto the field, under blinding lights which had been turned on. It was cloudy over the stadium and it was threatening to rain.

The Dallas Stars’ Captain had on a green mask and a green vest over a black long-sleeved compression shirt. He had white gloves and green boots. On his right hand, he wore a green emerald ring that glowed brightly and faded out, almost twinkling like a star. It had a pulse and was very much alive. It was the source of Jamie’s powers, allowing him to become super strong and emit green light or Hard Light Constructs from it at his command and thought.

“Jamie Benn, welcome!” a voice echoed toward him.

Jamie raised his hand up at ready. He flicked his eyes around the stadium, looking for the voice. The clouds darkened over him, but he ignored it.

“If you’re looking for me, Jamie dear, you’ll never find me!”

Jamie swung his hand in front of him and produced a sword as something flew at him. He quickly produced a shield to go with the sword too and to block the object. It clanged off of his green glowing shield but the impact sent Jamie flying backward. He landed on the ground in the tunnel.

“Show yourself, you coward!” Jamie spat, using his Supreme Voice power and scrambling to his feet. He gripped the green glowing sword and shield in his hands.

As if on cue, a man dressed in a black and blue armored suit with spikes rising from his shoulder sleeves and outfit landed on the ground like a meteor from outer space. He had a built in watch to his left glove, which was probably used to activate his powers. He hit the ground with a thunderous thud and dented the field. He snapped his head up to reveal a long, deep and distinct scar on his forehead adjacent to his right eye. He was scowling at the Hockey Hero.

“Roberto Luongo, should have known,” Jamie snapped.

Roberto stood up straight and faced Jamie. He narrowed his eyes and the goalpost bent backward and headed for Jamie. Jamie spotted it coming from him and darted to the side, drawing up a hoverboard. Still holding onto the sword and shield, he jumped on and zoomed safely into the air as the goalpost crashed to the ground.

“Missed!” Jamie laughed.

Roberto spat on the ground and turned to where Jamie was hovering over the stands to the side. The villain’s eyes were glowing a hard red color. Jamie guided the hoverboard down and it dissolved under his feet as he hit the ground. Roberto had found a wooden stick, which appeared to be his weapon of choice. Jamie faced the villain face-to-face and then swung his own weapon, the sword, at him, instigating the battle.

Though Roberto's stick was wooden, Jamie ignored the wood and powered through, unfazed. They crossed the field, heading to the right side around the 30 yard line. Their weapons clanked together and swung at one another, but didn’t connect. Jamie learned that Roberto’s stick was more than a stick. It could shoot out arrows, bullets and withstand anything Jamie threw at the villain, both literally and figuratively.

Suddenly Roberto swiped his stick at Jamie’s feet, taking them out from under him and sending Jamie crashing to the ground. Then Roberto wasted no time and narrowed his eyes at Jamie and the hero flew into the air. He was tossed and slammed into the scoreboard, controlled by Roberto’s strong telekinesis powers. So that he wasn't hurt, Jamie pointed his ring and created a glowing green energy cloud under him as he fell down into the stands. Sure enough, he hit it and was completely unharmed. He got up at once and recreated his sword and shield and zoomed back toward Roberto.

Roberto was ready for him again and this time focused on a bench on the sidelines and lifted it into the air with his mind. He chucked it at Jamie, who was unsuspecting of it. It hit him, knocking off course and slamming him to the field, pinned under it. Jamie struggled under it, unable to get a grip on it to get it off.

Roberto stormed forward and sat down on the bench, looking down at Jamie with a dark look. “Seems you’re not strong enough Jamie dear!”

“Shut up!”

Jamie’s ring hand was free and he pointed his hand upward at a vertical angle and procured a long chain from the green glow. He lashed it at Roberto, who grabbed it with ease and crushed it back into nothing in his hand. Jamie gulped.

How was he going to be able to possibly beat this guy?

Then it hit him. He kicked up and managed to get the edge of the bench, which was good enough for him. He pushed up and sent Roberto and the bench flying off of him and into the air. Jamie rolled to the side and got to his feet. He pointed his ring at Roberto and shot green energy out at him. His sword reformed in his hand as he yanked Roberto back toward him, holding him firmly with the green light energy. He stuck the sword to the villain’s neck.

“Yeah, my strength doesn’t just come from the ring,” Jamie spat.

“Good to know, I’ll make mental note of that!” Roberto snapped.

He overpowered Jamie’s energy gradually and then blasted Jamie backward. The Dallas Star slammed into the ground, at the entrance to the home team’s tunnel. He scrambled to his feet and stood in the entrance to the tunnel. He glanced out to see Roberto still unconscious from his energy blast. But he wouldn’t be out for long. And worse news, his ring’s glow faded to nothing. It was useless to him and he was useless and defenseless. His ring’s power had died and he had to re-charge it. He needed help...he needed a healer!

He pulled his phone out. He had to call someone and get some help. If he didn’t get help soon, he’d be destroyed by Roberto Luongo. He dialed his teammate and friend’s number, hoping that he wasn’t busy with his spy work.

“Hello?” a familiar voice growled into the speaker.

“Zenon Konopka?” Jamie questioned.

“Yeah. Who’s this?”

“Jamie Benn. Listen, put my best friend on the phone right now or so help me, I’ll find a way to come over there and make you!” Jamie snapped.

He heard Zenon growl, "You got five minutes to talk!" Jamie rolled his eyes, Tyler Seguin was in a peril. Again.

“What are you doing Tyler? I need your help!”

“Are you kidding? I’m working Jamie.”

“This takes precedence...besides - knowing you - how are you not finished with your battle by now. Come on Seggy, I need you...my ring...died...please!”

“Again, Jamie?? I’m in the middle of an interrogation right now. This moron is giving me everything.”

Jamie heard Zenon murmuring to himself, annoyed, “I don’t….give everything.”

“Look, you can’t pull me out of this right now Jamie!”

“Come on.”

“Ask Val or something.”

“Look, if it was any other time and something that that archer could do, I’d gladly ask him but I need...a healer!”

“So ask Patrick Kane.”

“I can’t. Tyler, please!”

“Jamie!”

“Tyler!”

“Ugh, fine, let me put you on hold...I gotta get out of some fire chain, handcuffs and ropes, but I’ll be over there.”

“Good, do it fast.”

Jamie heard the sounds of grunting and fighting, before he heard Tyler’s voice again, “Do I really have to smash another chair, Zenon?”

Suddenly Jamie heard more noises and it didn’t sound good. He wasn’t sure what was going on but he was sure that Tyler wasn’t going to be available. “TYLER!! TYLER, SPEAK TO ME!! TYLER!! Tyler, what’s going on!!??”

“Sorry Jamie, Tyler’s a little tied up at the moment, he’ll have to call you back!” Zenon snickered into the speaker and hung up.

The phone clicked off and Jamie was horrified. He stuffed his phone away and spun around to see Roberto storming toward him. He spun back around and darted down the tunnel, heading for an escape. He didn’t have time to call Patrick Kane or anyone. He had to focus on getting out alive and escaping.

He dashed through the tunnel, scared out of his mind and burst from the stadium. He continued across and dove behind a building. In the reflection on the glass of the building in front of him, he spotted Roberto walking calmly from the stadium. In his hands he was fiddling around with his wooden stick.

“Jamie Benn,” he called, glowering. “Come on, don’t you wanna fight me? Sorry I had to drain your ring’s power, but hey, maybe you shouldn’t rely on it so much.”

Jamie pressed against the building and held his breath as Roberto closed in on his hiding spot. He had to do something, in no time Roberto would find him and end him. There was only one thing he could do...a surprise attack!

Jamie closed his eyes, took a deep breath and reopened his eyes. He clenched his fist. Before he planned to jump out and attack, he spotted the watch on the villain’s arm and a new idea hit him. He jumped out and tackled Roberto, who was completely unprepared. He grabbed Jamie and was about to fling him away, but the hero grabbed his arm and pressed the button on Roberto’s watch.

Instantly the villain buckled under Jamie. He still had strength and flung Jamie away, but it was enough time for the hero to get back to his feet unscathed and bolt off to safety.

Roberto screamed his fury into the air and punched the building to the side of him, denting it was a powerful fist. “JAMIE RANDOLPH BENN!!”

But Jamie was a safe distance now and he’d found Tyler’s warehouse in the process. He darted inside, not knowing that this was where Tyler was, until he heard his friend’s terrifying shriek of pain.

“Tyler Seguin!” Jamie hissed to himself. He raced into the warehouse and skidded to a halt, rounding a rusty old beer barrel.

Ahead of him, Tyler was strapped to a chair by some fire chain...and it was on fire! Tyler was kicking and screaming in agony. Zenon was to the side of him, controlling the heat of his weapon. Jamie darted forward and shoved Zenon to the side. He reached out to remove the chain, but drew back at the heat.

“It’s no use Jamie!” Tyler gasped.

“Really buddy, how could you not defeat this guy?”

“Fire chain dude. You try battling one!”

“You danger-prone spy you!” Jamie chuckled. Then he became serious, “So how do I get ya out?”

“Put your ring in my hand so I can power it,” Tyler ordered, groaning with agony as Zenon recovered and upped the heat to the chain. “JAMIE!”

Jamie punched Zenon in the face and sent him stumbling back again. The villain, fazed, shook his head to clear it, while Jamie found Tyler’s hand, bound behind him and the chair. He touched his ring to Tyler’s hand before Zenon recovered and upped the heat still.

Suddenly the green glow came back and Jamie spun around to face Zenon and blasted him with green energy. Then he created his sword and swung it at Zenon, who fled from the warehouse, waving his hand to cut the fire and take his chain back. Then he vanished from sight.

Jamie used his sword to cut Tyler’s rope bondage from him and helped him to his feet.

“Thanks Jamie,” Tyler said.

“Anytime...thank you for saving me!”

Tyler looked down at himself. “I need to find Patrick...these burns aren’t going to help out any and they hurt like hell.”

“I gotcha. Let’s go find Kaner and the others!”

“Right.”

Jamie and Tyler darted from the warehouse now, but skidded to a halt as Roberto and Zenon stood blocking their path. Roberto had gotten his powers back and he was furious. Zenon lashed his chain before him.

“Guess we’ll have to wait on that!” Jamie barked.

Jamie lifted his hand up and pointed the ring ahead of him. Tyler raised his hands up and produced the rainbow energy and shot it at Zenon to change his outfit color once more. Then he did a backbend and twirled like an ice skater and then kicked at Zenon, who wrapped his chain around Tyler’s leg again. But Jamie had his friend’s back and blasted Zenon with green energy, before drawing his sword and striking the chain, so it fell off of Tyler’s leg harmlessly.

Tyler spun around and kicked Zenon in the face, sending him to the ground. Roberto zeroed in on Tyler though and grabbed him with his telekinesis powers and made him fly into the air. Jamie was on it however and pointed his ring up and grabbed Tyler with his green energy, pulling him back down to the ground. Roberto kept at him though and Tyler just remained in the air.

“Oh would one of you just do something already! Flying’s cool and all but it’s not my cup of tea!”

Roberto smirked and flicked his head to the side sharply and Tyler was broken from Jamie’s grasp. He slammed into the warehouse and crashed to the ground, dazed. Zenon lashed his chain at Tyler and it coiled around him, from head to foot, trapping him once more. Jamie procured a green whip, which he flicked at Zenon and sent him stumbling to the ground. Then he threw out his green energy lasso and pulled Zenon over to him.

Roberto faced him and accidently got Zenon instead of Jamie, which was damaging to the villain, who screamed and actually flew right at his friend. Zenon collided with Roberto and the two crashed to the ground. Zenon accidently grabbed Roberto’s arm and pushed the button on his watch, deactivating the powerful villain. Jamie worked quickly and shot green energy at them, which was meant to lasso around them and restrain them both. Then the hero walked over and picked them both up with his ring energy and punched his fist, launching them far away from the scene.

Jamie spun to Tyler, who was lying on the ground. The poor guy looked even weaker. The chain had vanished from him once more, but he didn’t look good. At least this time, Jamie could hold out some with his ring being at 50% power usage.

“Jamie, it hurts...I-I can’t move.”

“Don’t worry Tyler, I’ll find Kaner and get you help.” Jamie scooped Tyler up into his arms and walked off. “You’re so lucky that your friend has super strength.”

Tyler weakly smiled. “You’re the best Jamie Benn.”
